Use of autobilevel ventilation in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: An observational study.

2017

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the first-choice treatment for obstructive sleep-disordered breathing. Automatic bilevel ventilation can be used to treat obstructive sleep-disordered breathing when CPAP is ineffective, but clinical experience is still limited. To assess the outcome of titration with CPAP and automatic bilevel ventilation, the charts of 356 outpatients (obstructive sleep apnea, n = 242; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease + obstructive sleep apnea overlap, n = 80; obesity hypoventilation syndrome [OHS], n = 34; 103 females) treated for obstructive sleep-disordered breathing from January 2014 to April 2017 were reviewed. Positive airway pressure titration was …

Outcome comparison of integrated psycho‐oncological care versus unstructured care—Results of a non‐randomised open‐label two‐arm trial

2019

Objective To compare patients' experiences with a systematic, integrated psycho-oncological care (IC) model to experiences with "care as usual" (CAU). Methods To improve patients' knowledge about psychosocial support options and to facilitate use, an IC model was developed by psycho-oncologists and a health insurance company and implemented in one German cancer care facility. Using a parallel, non-randomised design, these patients' experiences were compared to CAU patients. In 2015, both patient groups received questionnaires 6-12 months post-inpatient treatment. Main outcomes were awareness, use and opinion of psycho-oncological care (PC) and anxiety level (Generalized Anxiety Disorder Sca…

Subchronic Antidepressant Treatment with Venlafaxine or Imipramine and Effects on Blood Pressure and Heart Rate: Assessment by Automatic 24-Hour Moni…

1996

Venlafaxine is a new nontricyclic antidepressant inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, noradrenaline, and, to a lesser extent, dopamine without antagonizing cholinergic, histaminergic, or noradrenergic receptors. Significantly, in a first placebo-controlled safety and efficacy study, high doses of venlafaxine increased blood pressure in some study subjects. In order to investigate further the effect of subchronic antidepressant drug treatment on blood pressure and heart rate, the effects of a conventional tricyclic (imipramine) and a structurally different phenethylamine antidepressant (venlafaxine) were compared. Sixteen inpatients with major depression (melancholic type) were treated for …

Tolerability of 24-hour intraocular pressure monitoring of a pressure-sensitive contact lens.

2013

Purpose To investigate tolerability and safety of a new diagnostic device for 24-hour intraocular pressure monitoring in healthy subjects and age-matched glaucoma patients. Patients and methods Twenty healthy subjects (group 1) and 20 age-matched glaucoma patients (group 2) were included in this prospective, single-center, open, observational parallel group study. The SENSIMED Triggerfish Sensor is a soft disposable contact lens embedding a telemetry chip and strain gauge sensor for continuous intraocular pressure monitoring. The Sensor was placed in 1 eye for 24 hours. Tolerability was evaluated using a visual analog scale (range, 0 to 100; 0=no discomfort; 100=very severe discomfort). Saf…

Measurement of EMG activity with textile electrodes embedded into clothing.

2007

Novel textile electrodes that can be embedded into sports clothing to measure averaged rectified electromyography (EMG) have been developed for easy use in field tests and in clinical settings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity, reliability and feasibility of this new product to measure averaged rectified EMG. The validity was tested by comparing the signals from bipolar textile electrodes (42 cm(2)) and traditional bipolar surface electrodes (1.32 cm(2)) during bilateral isometric knee extension exercise with two electrode locations (A: both electrodes located in the same place, B: traditional electrodes placed on the individual muscles according to SENIAM, n=10 person…

Safety and efficacy of outpatient treatment with CPT-11 plus bolus folinic acid/5-fluorouracil as first-line chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal c…

2003

The combination of irinotecan (CPT-11), bolus 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and folinic acid (FA) (Saltz regimen) has recently been questioned as first-line chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer after high early death rates due to gastrointestinal and thromboembolic events were reported in two US trials. Therefore, we carefully evaluated the safety and efficacy of this regimen, with high value placed on the management of delayed diarrhea. Forty-six patients with metastatic colorectal cancer received this first-line treatment in nine German outpatient clinics. Dose reductions were mandatory from the first cycle in case of toxicity grade2. Chemotherapy was administered only to diarrhea-free p…

Acute performance evaluation of a new ventricular automatic capture algorithm

2006

Aims This study evaluated the acute clinical performance of a new ventricular automatic capture algorithm developed to work with all lead types and pacing vectors. Methods and results During regular pacemaker implant or replacement, AutoThreshold and manual threshold tests were performed in ventricular unipolar (UP) and bipolar (BP, if applicable) pacing using a customized external prototype INSIGNIA™ pacemaker. The success rate and accuracy of two different modes (commanded and ambulatory) of the automatic capture algorithm were used to evaluate the performance. Loss-of-capture events (two consecutive non-captured beats without backup pacing) were used to assess safety. Data of 53 patients…

The Objective and Subjective Caregiving Burden and Caregiving Behaviours of Parents of Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa

2015

Objective: The study aimed to examine caregiving burden and levels of distress, accommodating behaviours, expressed emotion (EE) and carers' skills, in parents of adolescents with anorexia nervosa. Method: A semi-structured interview assessed the objective burden (time spent across caregiving tasks) in parents (n = 196) of adolescents (n = 144) receiving outpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa. Subjective burden (carers' distress), accommodating behaviours, EE and carers' skills were measured by self-report. Results: Mothers, on average, spent 2.5 h/day of care, mainly providing food and emotional support, compared with 1 h/day by fathers. The level of distress and accommodating behaviour…

Impact of the SARS-CoV2 pandemic dissemination on the management of neuroendocrine neoplasia in Italy: a report from the Italian Association for Neur…

2020

Introduction The organization of the healthcare system has significantly changed after the recent COVID-19 outbreak, with a negative impact on the management of oncological patients. The present survey reports data collected by the Italian Association for Neuroendocrine Tumors on the management of patients with neuroendocrine neoplasia (NEN) during the pandemic dissemination. Methods A survey with 57 questions was sent to NEN-dedicated Italian centers regarding the management of patients in the period March 9, 2020, to May 9, 2020 Results The main modification in the centers’ activity consisted of decreases in newly diagnosed NEN patients (− 76.8%), decreases in performed surgical procedure…

Efficacy of Therapeutic Intervention in Headache Units in Patients With Frequent Headaches: The EFUNCE Study

2006

Data confirming that therapeutic intervention in headache units is superior to care received by patients in other levels of the health system are scant. This is a pilot study that includes patients seen in 4 headache units for at least 1 year, who had a headache frequency of more than 15 days per month. The results of the first 30 patients showed a significant improvement in different headache parameters and a high degree of satisfaction with the treatment received.
