Repair of the mandibular nerve by means of autologous nerve grafting after resection of the lower jaw

Summary On the basis of two cases we demonstrate our method of autologous nerve grafting for substitution of the mandibular nerve after mandibular resection. The sural nerve served as a donor nerve, the graft was imbedded microsurgically at the juncture points by means of a perineurial interfascicular nerve suture. Oversized grafts of about 20 cm in length were chosen intentionally in order to insert them without tension between the stumps of the recipient nerve and outside the regeneration zone of the bone. In both cases complete resensibilization of the lower lip was reached after about six months.

Background The caveolin-1 protein (structural component of membrane caveolae) plays important roles in several biological functions, such as endocytosis, cell adhesion, and cell signaling. However, this protein has been associated with mechanisms of tumorigenesis in several neoplasms. A review of 50 cases of ameloblastoma in Nigerians.

Objectives. The purpose of this study was the review of 50 ameloblastoma in Nigerian patients observed in the Hos- pital of Ibadan. Ameloblastoma represents nearly 1% of all neoplasm located in the oral cavity. In 80% of cases it could be found in the mandible: 70% of these involving the molar region or the ascending ramus, 20% the premolar region and 10% the anterior part. Ameloblastoma is considered a benign neoplasm with slow growing-pattern and lo- cally aggressive behaviour. Methods. We collected the clinicopathologic data of 50 ameloblastoma from the files of the Hospital of Ibadan. Results. Ep-CAM, a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed in most epithelium in normal conditions, has diverse roles in these tissues, including in cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, cell cycle regulation, migration and intracellular signaling. It is also over-expressed in most malignant neoplasia, participating in the initiation, progression, and metastatic dissemination of the tumor.
