Nematic elastomers: From a microscopic model to macroscopic elasticity theory

2008

A Landau theory is constructed for the gelation transition in cross-linked polymer systems possessing spontaneous nematic ordering, based on symmetry principles and the concept of an order parameter for the amorphous solid state. This theory is substantiated with help of a simple microscopic model of cross-linked dimers. Minimization of the Landau free energy in the presence of nematic order yields the neoclassical theory of the elasticity of nematic elastomers and, in the isotropic limit, the classical theory of isotropic elasticity. These phenomenological theories of elasticity are thereby derived from a microscopic model, and it is furthermore demonstrated that they are universal mean-fi…

Activity of Antimicrobial Silver Polystyrene Nanocomposites.

2012

A simple technique based on doping polymers within situgenerated silver nanoparticles (Ag/PS films) has been developed. In particular, an antiseptic material has been prepared by dissolving silver 1,5-cyclooctadiene-hexafluoroacetylacetonate in amorphous polystyrene, and the obtained solid solution has been heated for ca. 10 s at a convenient temperature (180°C). Under such conditions the metal precursor decomposes producing silver atoms that diffuse into the polymer and clusterize. The antimicrobial characteristics of the resulting polystyrene-based material have been accurately evaluated towardEscherichia coli (E. coli)comparing the cytotoxicity effect of 10 wt.% and 30 wt.% (drastic and …

Photon correlation spectroscopy to study the dynamics of α- and β-relaxation in amorphous poly(Alkylmethacrylates) above Tg

2008

A short survey of the underlying principles of isotropic light scattering from amorphous bulk polymers is given. The interrelation between the time dependent longitudinal compliance and the autocorrelation function of density fluctuations is briefly reviewed and a comparison with poly(vinylacetate) PVAc is presented. For four poly-(alkylmethacrylates) - poly(methylmethacrylate) PMMA, poly(ethylmethacrylate) PEMA, poly(n-butylmethacrylate) PBMA and poly(n-hexylmethacrylate) PHMA - the results of photon spectroscopic studies are given and discussed in terms of the occurrence of primary and secondary relaxation processes within the accessible time range of the experiment.

Blends from redox active liquid crystal ionomers and amorphous ionomers

1994

Abstract Biphasic blends (mixtures) of liquid crystal ionomers (prepared from ferrocene containing liquid crystal polymers by a redox reaction) and partially sulfonated polystyrene combine the constituent properties in a way, which is dependent on the measuring method. Polarizing microscopy shows homogenous textures similar to the pure liquid crystal polymer. Mechanical measurements show however the elastomeric behaviour of sulfonated polystyrene. The phase separated structure of these blends is proved by differential scanning calorimetry measurements.

Influence of processing conditions on some properties of anionically synthesized polycaprolactam in presence of lithium chloride

1980

Nylon 6–LiCl systems of various concentrations were prepared by anionic polymerization of caprolactam in the presence of salt. A depression of both crystallization rate and melting temperature was evidenced through x-ray, density, and DSC analyses. Such a preliminary characterization allowed for choosing the proper conditions in order to obtain amorphous fibers from a spinning operation which was performed at a temperature lower than the pure polymer melting point. These results are of technological relevance, especially in view of obtaining, as in similar cases, large amorphous orientations through a spinning–drawing process and high-modulus fibers after subsequent crystallization. Also, t…

Strain rate effect in the single-fiber-fragmentation test

2001

The single fiber fragmentation test (SFFT) has been widely used to characterize the interface in fiber-reinforced polymers. The purpose of the work reported here was to determine the effect of strain rate on the fiber fragment lengths obtained in the SFFT. Three materials systems were used to make single-fiber-composite specimens: E-glass fiber/polycarbonate matrix, AS4-carbon fiber/polycarbonate matrix, and AU4-carbon fiber/polycarbonate matrix. The fiber-matrix adhesion in all three systems is based on physisorption rather than chemisorption. Each system was tested at strain rates ranging over four orders of magnitude. Results are reported in terms of fragment length, the dependent variab…

1982

The stress relaxation behaviour after compression yielding of two semicrystalline polymers, a low density polyethylene and an isotactic polypropylene, is investigated. Data taken at several strains, reached with different sample loading rates, are considered. Master curves are obtained by means of dimensionless stress and time measures, similar to those recently adopted for some amorphous polymers.

Hybrid materials from organic polymers and inorganic salts

1994

The prepaparation of amorphous, homogeneous blends of zwitterionic polymers and transition metal salts was investigated. Homogeneous miscibility was achieved in many cases up to equimolar amounts of salt, depending on the anion and cation chosen. Various analytical techniques point to a solid state solution of the inorganic ions in the polymer matrix.

The glass transition in polymer melts

1994

This paper presents some results of a Monte Carlo simulation for the glass transition in two- and three-dimensional polymer melts. The melt was simulated by the bond-fluctuation model on a d-dimensional cubic lattice which was combined with a two-level hamiltonian favouring long bonds in order to generate a competition between the energetic and topological constraints in the system. This competition prevents crystallization and makes the melt freeze in an amorphous structure as soon as the internal relaxation times match the observation time of the simulation set by the cooling rate. The freezing point of the melt, i.e the glass transition temperature Tg, thus depends upon the cooling rate …

Determination of the conformation of polymers in the amorphous solid state and in concentrated solution by neutron diffraction

1975

Abstract From the coherent neutron scattering on dilute solid solutions of the ordinary polymer within the deuterated polymer, conformation parameters of polymer chains in amorphous solid states can be determined. In this way vitreous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been investigated. The chains form unperturbed coils and the radius of gyration is very near to the corresponding value in dilute solutions of the same polymer in the low molecular θ-solvent butyl chloride. The same principle of measurement has been applied to concentrated solutions of PMMA in D-acetone. The solutions contained 50% polymer, the main part of which (98% and more) was deuterated so that the system was opticall…
