Ribonuclease H levels in herpes simplex virus-infected cells.

1980

Two forms of ribonuclease H (RNase H) have been identified both in uninfected and Herpes Simplex virus (HSV-)infected BHK cells. Identical RNase H species were detected in control- as well as in infected cells. RNase H I and II have not been found to be associated both with host cell DNA polymerase alpha and beta and HSV-induced DNA polymerase. Infection of BHK cells with HSV type 1 does not lead to a pronounced alteration of RNase H II activity but to an increase (3-fold) of the extractable RNase H I activity. RNase H I activity increases to a maximum between 8-10 hours p.i.; the bulk of HSV-DNA synthesis occurs between 6-8 hours p.i. From these experiments we draw the preliminary conclusi…

Beilinson Motives and Algebraic K-Theory

2019

Section 12 is a recollection on the basic results of stable homotopy theory of schemes, after Morel and Voevodsky. In particular, we recall the theory of orientations in a motivic cohomology theory. Section 13 is a recollection of the fundamental results on algebraic K-theory which we translate into results within stable homotopy theory of schemes. In particular, Quillen’s localization theorem is seen as an absolute purity theory for the K-theory spectrum. In Section 14, we introduce the fibred category of Beilinson motives as an appropriate Verdier quotient of the motivic stable homotopy category. Using the Adams filtration on K-theory, we prove that Beilinson motives have the properties o…

A review of hydropower plants in Romania: Distribution, current knowledge, and their effects on fish in headwater streams

2021

Abstract Hydropower is currently experiencing a boom in southeast Europe. For Romania, the number of hydropower plants is estimated to be between 545 and 674, but little has been published about their environmental impact. We provide the first overview of the geographical distribution of hydropower plants in Romania, supplemented by a review of current knowledge about their environmental impact, and present case study evidence on the effects of small hydropower plants on fish in headwater streams of the Carpathian Mountains. We show that 49% of the documented 545 hydropower plants in Romania are located in Natura 2000 or other protected areas, 5% are located in water bodies with ‘very good’…

Analytical Solutions of Viscoelastic Nonlocal Timoshenko Beams

2022

A consistent nonlocal viscoelastic beam model is proposed in this paper. Specifically, a Timoshenko bending problem, where size- and time-dependent effects cannot be neglected, is investigated. In order to inspect scale phenomena, a stress-driven nonlocal formulation is used, whereas to simulate time-dependent effects, fractional linear viscoelasticity is considered. These two approaches are adopted to develop a new Timoshenko bending model. Analytical solutions and application samples of the proposed formulation are presented. Moreover, in order to show influences of viscoelastic and size effects on mechanical response, parametric analyses are provided. The contributed results can be usefu…

Quantifying residential PV feed-in power in low voltage grids based on satellite-derived irradiance data with application to power flow calculations

2016

AbstractA scheme using satellite-derived irradiance measurements to model the feed-in power of residential photovoltaic (PV) systems in a low voltage distribution grid is described. It is validated against smart meter measurements from a test site with 12 residential PV systems in the city of Ulm, Germany, during May 2013 to December 2014. The PV feed-in power is simulated in a 15-min time resolution based on irradiance data derived from Meteosat Second Generation satellite images by the physically based retrieval scheme Heliosat-4. The PV simulation is based on the nominal power and location of the PV systems as provided by the distribution system operator. Orientation angles are taken fro…

The Dunkl–Williams constant, convexity, smoothness and normal structure

2008

Abstract In this paper we exhibit some connections between the Dunkl–Williams constant and some other well-known constants and notions. We establish bounds for the Dunkl–Williams constant that explain and quantify a characterization of uniformly nonsquare Banach spaces in terms of the Dunkl–Williams constant given by M. Baronti and P.L. Papini. We also study the relationship between Dunkl–Williams constant, the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and normal structure.

Identifying Key Predictors of Recidivism among Offenders Attending a Batterer Intervention Program: A Survival Analysis

2019

Facilitating Team Reflexivity About Communication

2016

This article explores how team facilitation can promote team reflexivity about communication. We present a case study that was conducted within a participatory action research framework with a Top Management Team for an international manufacturing company. We identify and analyze five key interventions that promoted team reflexivity. These interventions included activities such as (a) framing the facilitation, (b) inquiring into the key issues, (c) role modeling feedback, (d) positive storytelling, and (e) reflecting on concrete communication actions. The findings suggest that reflexivity can be enhanced through positive storytelling and emotion, framing and contextual sensitivity, and add…

Leadership in virtual teams: a comparison of transformational and transactional leaders

2009

The effects of transactional and transformational leadership on groups in which people interact in a virtual manner were analyzed and specifically the level of satisfaction and perception of the style adopted were evaluated. Results indicated that a transformational style is more satisfying than a transactional style, and that a transformational leader is judged to be better than a transactional leader.
