Background and Aims: Amyloidosis is a rare complication of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]; its low prevalence has hindered both descriptive and therapeutic studies. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of amyloidosis in IBD and the risk factors associated with this complication. Methods: This paper presents an observational study, followed by a systematic review of the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of the disease and a review of the diagnostic and therapeutic options. Chemical heterogeneity of amyloid in the carpal tunnel syndrome

140 biopsies from 108 patients afflicted with the carpal tunnel syndrome were studied, 27 of whom showed deposition of amyloid, in 6 of them to such an extent that the amyloid was considered significant in the pathogenesis of the carpal tunnel syndrome. Morphologically, vessels and ligaments were affected and especially the peritendinous structures. Abstract During a nine-year treatment by haemodialysis for renal failure a now 57-year-old woman developed multiple complications of the skeletal system. Acute calcific periarthritis of the right shoulder became manifest one year after the start of the haemodialysis, followed the next years by progressive arthropathy with subchondral amyloid cysts of both shoulders, effusions in the knee-joint and destructive spondylarthropathy of the middle vertebrae. Raman spectroscopy has been used to investigate different conformational states of bovine pancreatic insulin: the native form and several structurally modified states with different extent of denaturation induced by thermo-chemical treatment and by applying very high pressure (up to 8 GPa) using a diamond anvil cell. High-pressure results confirm the peculiar strength to volume compression of insulin and largely extend the pressure range of its structural stability (0-4.2 GPa).
