Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in the transitions of gadolinium

2000

High-resolution resonance ionization mass spectrometry has been used to measure isotope shifts and hyperfine structure in all (J = 2-6) and the transitions of gadolinium (Gd I). Gadolinium atoms in an atomic beam were excited with a tunable single-frequency laser in the wavelength range of 422-429 nm. Resonant excitation was followed by photoionization with the 363.8 nm line of an argon ion laser and resulting ions were mass separated and detected with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Isotope shifts for all stable gadolinium isotopes in these transitions have been measured for the first time. Additionally, the hyperfine structure constants of the upper states have been derived for the isotop…

Detection of defects buried in metallic samples by scanning microwave microscopy

2011

This paper reports the local detection of buried calibrated metal defects in metal samples by a new experimental technique, scanning microwave microscopy. This technique combines the electromagnetic measurement capabilities of a microwave vector network analyzer with the subnanometer-resolution capabilities of an atomic force microscope. The network analyzer authorizes the use of several frequencies in the range 1--6 GHz, allowing three-dimensional tomographical investigation, which is useful for the detection of bulk defects in metal materials.

Electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma chamber studies using a network analyzer as a loaded cavity probe

2012

A method and first results utilizing a network analyzer as a loaded cavity probe to study the resonance properties of a plasma filled electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) plasma chamber are presented. The loaded cavity measurements have been performed using a dual port technique, in which two separate waveguides were used simultaneously. One port was used to ignite and sustain the plasma with a microwave source operating around 11 GHz and the other was used to probe the cavity properties with the network analyzer using a frequency range around 14 GHz. The first results obtained with the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS demonstrate that the presence of plasma has significant effects on the reson…

Lead speciation in rainwater samples by modified fused silica capillaries coupled to a direct injection nebulizer (DIN) for sample introduction in IC…

2001

Lead speciation using modified silica capillaries for the introduction of liquid samples to a direct injection nebulizer of an inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometer is described and demonstrated. The fused silica capillaries were coated by covalently bonding a cation exchange active organic molecule to the activated capillary surface. The best results were obtained by introducing a bifunctional reagent in a prior step. In this case, a silane reagent was chosen which acted as a methacrylic acid group for further binding. The influence of the chemical modification of the surface of the sample capillary of the DIN on the selective retention of inorganic lead (Pb2+) and trieth…

Ratiocalc: Software for processing data from multicomponent volcanic gas analyzers

2015

Portable gas analyzers have become a powerful tool for the real-time monitoring of volcanic gas composition over the last decade. Gas analyzers make it possible to retrieve in real-time the chemical composition of a fumarole system or a plume in an open-conduit volcano via periodic field-deployments or at permanent stations. The core of a multicomponent volcanic gas analyzer (MultiGAS) consists of spectroscopic and electrochemical sensors that are used to determine the concentrations of the most abundant volcanic gases (H2O, CO2, SO2, H2S, H2, CO and HCl) in a diluted plume and their mutual molar ratios. Processing such data is often difficult due to the high sensitivity of the sensors to e…

Measurement uncertainty impact on simplified load flow analysis in MV smart grids

2018

This work is focused on the measurement uncertainty impact on load flow analysis in medium voltage (MV) distribution networks. In more detail, the paper presents the uncertainty evaluation of a simplified load flow algorithm, which is based on the load power measurements at each secondary substation and one voltage measurement at the slack bus (i.e. the voltage at the MV bus bars of the primary substation). To reduce the costs of the monitoring system, the load flow algorithm makes use of LV load power measurements for all the substations except those of MV users, where MV transducers are usually already installed. The uncertainties on the algorithm input quantities (load powers and slack b…

Statistical analysis of noise levels in urban areas

1991

Abstract Environmental noise measurements have been carried out during recent years in different cities and locations of Spain. The noise levels have been continuously sampled over 24 h periods using a noise level analyzer. The data contained in this paper represent a total of 4200 measurement hours. All the information has been used to investigate the time patterns of the noise levels under a wide range of different conditions and to study the relationships between several noise descriptors in urban areas.

A compact apparatus for mass selective resonance ionization spectroscopy in a buffer gas cell

1997

Abstract An ultra-sensitive laser spectroscopic method for the investigation of transuranium nuclides has been developed based on resonance ionization in an argon buffer gas cell. This method has been combined with ion-guide extraction and mass selective direct detection of the resonantly ionized atoms. Using argon as a buffer gas, recoils of fusion reactions can be thermalized even at low pressure. The differential pumping system consists of only one roots pump and two turbo molecular pumps. The set-up has been tested with 243 Am evaporated from a filament located inside the optical gas cell. Resonance ionization is performed using a two-step excitation with an excimer-dye-laser combinatio…

Quadrupole interaction of $^{8}$Li and $^{9}$Li in LiNbO$_{3}$ and the quadrupole moment of $^{9}$Li

1988

The quadrupole interaction of nuclear spin polarized8Li (I=2) and9Li (I=3/2) in LiNbO3 has been studied at room temperature. The polarization was achieved by optical pumping of a fast atomic beam with circularly polarized laser light. The atoms were implanted into a hexagonal LiNbO3 single crystal and the quadrupole splitting ofβ-NMR spectra was measured. A ratio of ¦Q(9Li)/Q(8Li)¦=0.88(4) for the nuclear quadrupole moments was deduced, yielding a new value of ¦Q(9Li)¦=25.3 (9) mb for the quadrupole moment of9Li.
