Liver disease in chelated transfusion-dependent thalassemics: the role of iron overload and chronic hepatitis C.

Abstract Iron overload and hepatitis virus C infection cause liver fibrosis in thalassemics. In a monocentric retrospective analysis of liver disease in a cohort of 191 transfusion-dependent thalassemics, in 126 patients who had undergone liver biopsy (mean age 17.2 years; 58 hepatitis virus C-RNA positive and 68 hepatitis virus C-RNA negative) the liver iron concentration (median 2.4 mg/gr dry liver weight) was closely related to serum ferritin levels (R = 0.58; p<0.0001). Male gender (OR 4.12) and serum hepatitis virus C-RNA positivity (OR 11.04) were independent risk factors for advanced liver fibrosis. In recent years, important advances were made to clarify the biology and potential use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in the therapy of a number of disorders. MSC are present in a number of tissues, ranging from adult bone marrow, to several adult organs, adipose tissue and, in the last years, the fetal-associated (also named as extraembryonic) tissues (e.g. placenta, amniotic membrane, umbilical cord). Analysis of Ki-Ras mutations in stage I rectal carcinomas and respective regional lymph nodes.

In this work we show that the percentage of Ki-RAS mutations in codons 12 and 13 in rectal cancer are sensibly lower than in colon cancer, providing further evidence that these two kinds of tumors should be considered two different entities. Moreover, we show that the detection in regional lymph nodes of the same mutation of primary tumor might represent an indicator of lymph nodes metastasis in rectal carcinoma not detected in routine histologic examination.

RAS is a family of small proteins with GTPase activity that regulate proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis in all cell types. The three major isoforms of RAS (H-, K- and N-RAS) differ only in the last 25 amino acids which are the site of different post-translational modifications that lead to diverse subcellular localization and efficiency of activation of alternative pathways of signal transduction. T Cell Large Granular Lymphocytic Leukemia in Association with Sjögren’s Syndrome

T cell large granular lymphocytic (LGL) leukemia is a rare condition accounting for 2–3% of all mature lymphoid leukemias. Here, we present the case of a 73-year-old woman presenting with neutropenia and anemia (hemoglobin 9.9 g/dl). Hematological assessment revealed the presence of a T cell LGL leukemia. At the time of T cell LGL leukemia diagnosis, the patient developed xerophthalmia and xerostomia, and a diagnosis of Sjögren’s syndrome was made following salivary gland biopsy.
