Capsule measuring ring to predict capsular bag diameter and follow its course after foldable intraocular lens implantation

2003

Purpose: To evaluate the extent of capsular bag shrinkage after cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and develop a regression formula to predict postoperative capsular bag size. Setting: Eye Hospital, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods: The axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth, and corneal radius in 58 eyes were measured preoperatively. Cataract surgery was by phacoemulsification followed by implantation of a 3-piece, acrylic, posterior chamber IOL. The capsular bag diameter and anterior capsulorhexis were measured intraoperatively and 1 day and 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively using a Koch capsule measuring ring (HumanOptics). Results: The me…

Effect of a closed foldable equator ring on capsular bag shrinkage in cataract surgery.

2005

To evaluate the effect of a closed foldable equator ring (CFER) versus a conventional capsular tension ring (CTR) on capsular bag shrinkage.Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. In this prospective study, 70 eyes of 70 patients were randomized to 2 groups using a 1:1 block scheme. After uneventful cataract surgery, a capsular measuring ring was implanted in all eyes to measure the capsular bag diameter in vivo. In Group 1, a CTR was implanted in the capsular bag. In Group 2, a CFER was inserted. Biometric characteristics such as axial length and the horizontal and vertical corneal radii were measured preoperatively. The capsular bag diameter and capsulor…

Central retinal artery occlusion-A new, provisional treatment approach.

2019

The retinal ganglion cells infarcted in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) are the somata of the optic nerve axons, part of the central nervous system. Consequently, CRAO with inner retinal infarction is a small vessel stroke, usually with the devastating consequence of severe visual loss in the affected eye. At present, there is no generally accepted, evidence-based therapy of nonarteritic CRAO in contrast to ischemic cerebral stroke that has well-accepted treatment protocols. Widely divergent and controversial therapeutic options for CRAO reflect the desperation of treating physicians and disparate conflicting studies. We examine reasons why treatment of nonarteritic CRAO remains pro…

Nano-composite thermochromic thin films and their application in Energy-efficient glazing

2010

A hybrid atmospheric pressure and aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition strategy is presented as a facile route for the production of vanadium dioxide nano-composite thin films. The effect of the inclusion of gold nanoparticles and the use of a surfactant molecule, tetraoctylammonium bromide, is discussed. The films were fully characterised using a wide variety of techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV/vis/NIR spectroscopy. It is shown that micro-structural changes brought about by careful control of film growth conditions, and/or the use of surfactant, lead to an enhancement of thermochromic properties. Gold nano…

A New Method for Direct Detection of Heparin on Surface-Modified Intraocular Lenses

1997

Background: Examination of surface-bound heparin on synthetic polymers can only be performed by few staining methods. These methods are limited by an only approximate detection of heparin visible at high magnification. Other methods only measure heparin quantitatively (per square dimension) and are rather sensitive to artifacts. Due to its homogeneous staining pattern, the modified toluidine blue staining technique, using a non-protein-based substance, allows examination and analysis of the homogeneity of the monomolecular heparin layer even under critical conditions like scanning electron microscopy. Materials and Methods: For critical examination of the heparin layer, this method was used…

Ultraviolet radiation at Mediterranean latitudes and protection efficacy of intraocular lenses.

2011

Summary Purpose After determining the mean intensity of ultraviolet radiation to which the human eye is exposed at Mediterranean latitudes, this data is used to evaluate the efficacy of the ultraviolet filters incorporated into various intraocular lenses. Methods Ultraviolet radiation measured at Mediterranean latitudes was used as a reference for the theoretical calculation of the amount of radiation to which the human eye is exposed. The spectral transmission curve from 290 to 380 nm was measured for 10 IOLs using a UV/VIS Perkins-Elmer Lambda 800 spectrometer. Results At Mediterranean latitudes, at sea level, with a mean annual solar irradiation of 50 j/cm 2 , the human eye receives a qu…

Anterior Capsule Opening Contraction and Late Intraocular Lens Dislocation after Cataract Surgery in Patients with Weak or Partially Absent Zonular S…

2021

Background and Objectives: To evaluate anterior capsule opening (ACO) contraction and late intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation after cataract surgery in patients with weak or partially absent zonular support and assess methods of reducing these complications. Materials and Methods: For this prospective study, we enlisted cataract surgery patients in our hospital with preoperative diagnoses of weak zonules. All patients received phacoemulsification surgery with implantation of a hydrophobic acrylic IOL and capsular tension ring (CTR). ACO reductions were measured for six months after enrolment. Data on late IOL dislocations were collected five years after enrolment of the last patient. Result…

Aseptic Production vs. Terminal Sterilization

2000

The safety of substance use in intraocular surgery ideally requires the absence of all biologically-active components capable of causing an inflammatory reaction. Substance purity is achieved with isolation and cleansing methods (e.g., of the polysaccharide), which remove any biological component with infective potential. The methods of production for polysaccharide isolation should remove biological agents, regardless of its origin. Hyaluronic acid is isolated either from rooster combs or biological fermentation. Use of this substance showed the development of postoperative intraocular inflammatory reactions resulting from contaminations from both sources. OVD should have low endotoxin val…

Possible involvement of nitric oxide in morphine-induced miosis and reduction of intraocular pressure in rabbits.

2006

The role of μ3 opioid receptors in morphine-induced intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering effect and miosis was evaluated in conscious, dark-adapted New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits using a masked-design study. IOP and pupil diameter (PD) measurements were taken at just before and 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6 h after monolateral instillation of morphine (10, 50 and 100 μg/30 μl) as compared to vehicle administered in the contralateral eye. Morphine-induced ocular effects were challenged by a pre-treatment with the non-selective opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone (100 μg/30 μl), the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, Nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME, 1%, 30 μl), or the non-selective μ3 opioid recept…
