Study of variability of an endophytic acremonium population in symptomless grapevine

2009

The endophytism of genus Acremonium in symptomless grapevines of several cultivars, grown both in pots or in the field, is reported. The no-tillage management of tested grapevines and the lack of chemical treatments facilitated the investigation of the ecological plant-fungus interaction. The isolates were differentiated at the strain level by vegetative compatibility assay and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analyses, using a set of four oligo-nucleotide primers. The endophytic Acremonium population in the healthy grapevine object of the survey seemed to show a low variability; all the techniques agreed in grouping the Acremonium strains in three different clusters and no relatio…

RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) profiles distinguish Paracentrotus lividus populations living in a stressing environment (Amvrakikos Gulf, Gr…

2009

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was performed to assess genetic markers of Paracentrotus lividus populations living in stressing environment in the Amvrakikos Gulf (Western Greece, Ionian Sea) where two populations distinguishable in body size, smaller than the open sea ones, were detected. The UPGMA dendrogram, constructed from pairwise . st values among population nuclear DNA markers, revealed that the small and medium-sized populations living inside the Amvrakikos presented a lower polymorphism, and form a cluster that shows the genetic distance with normal-sized populations (Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas) living in open sea. AMOVA analysis indicated a genetic distance amon…

Use of selected autochthonous lactic acid bacteria for Spanish-style table olive fermentation

2012

The present work presents a successful attempt to achieve an enhanced and more predictable fermentation process in Spanish-style green olive technology by selection and use of autochthonous starter cultures. During the first phase of this work, two Spanish-like fermentations of green table olives of cultivar (cv) “Nocellara del Belice”, coming from irrigated and not irrigated fields, were monitored, in order to highlight the best agricultural conditions for drupe production and to isolate lactic acid bacteria strains with relevant technological properties. Among 88 identified isolates, one Lactobacillus pentosus strain showed remarkable biochemical features and high acidification rate in sy…

Preliminary characterization of wine lactobacilli able to degrade arginine

2002

Lactobacillus strains able to degrade arginine were isolated and characterized from a typical red wine. All the strains were gram-positive, catalase-negative and produced both D- and L-lactate from glucose. Strains L2, L3, L4, and L6 were able to produce CO2 from glucose; however, production of CO2 from glucose was not observed in strains L1 and L5, suggesting that they belong to the homofermentative wine lactic acid bacteria (LAB) group. All of the lactobacilli were tested for their ability to ferment 49 carbohydrates. The sugar fermentation profile of strain L1 was unique, suggesting that this strain belonged to Lactococcus lactis ssp. cremoris, a non-typical wine LAB. Furthermore, a prel…

Rīka izstrāde automatizētai aizmugursistēmas izpildlaika testēšana

2017

AX-PET: A novel PET detector concept with full 3D reconstruction

2009

We describe the concept and first experimental tests of a novel 3D axial Positron Emission Tomography (PET) geometry. It allows for a new way of measuring the interaction point in the detector with very high precision. It is based on a matrix of long Lutetium-Yttrium OxyorthoSilicate (LYSO) crystals oriented in the axial direction, each coupled to one Geiger Mode Avalanche Photodiode (G-APD) array. To derive the axial coordinate, Wave Length Shifter (WLS) strips are mounted orthogonally and interleaved between the crystals. The light from the WLS strips is read by custom-made G-APDs. The weighted mean of the signals in the WLS strips has proven to give very precise axial resolution. The ach…

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of a new fish-virulent Vibrio vulnificus serovar that lacks potential to infect humans.

2007

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterial species that is virulent for humans and fish. Human isolates are classified into biotypes 1 and 3 (BT1 and BT3) and fish isolates into biotype 2 (BT2). However, a few human infections caused by BT2 isolates have been reported worldwide (zoonosis). These BT2 human isolates belong to serovar E (SerE), which is also present in diseased fish. The aim of the present work was to characterize a new BT2 serovar [serovar A (SerA)], which emerged in the European fish-farming industry in 2000, by means of phenotypic, serological and genetic [plasmid profiling, ribotyping and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)] methodologies. The results confirmed that SerA constit…

Measurements of Silicon Photomultipliers Responsivity in Continuous Wave Regime

2013

We report on the electrical and optical characterization, in continuous wave regime, of a novel class of silicon photomultipliers fabricated in standard planar technology on a silicon p-type substrate. Responsivity measurements, performed with an incident optical power down to tenths of picowatts, at different reverse bias voltages and on a broad (340–820 nm) spectrum, will be shown and discussed. The device temperature was monitored, allowing us to give a physical interpretation of the measurements. The obtained results demonstrate that such novel silicon photomultipliers are suitable as sensitive power meters for low photon fluxes.
