An insight into water stable isotope signatures in temperate catchment

Abstract Stable isotopes are used to decipher hydrological processes in watershed research. A two-year monthly monitoring of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope ratios (δ2H and δ18O) in a temperate catchment in Norther Europa, Latvia was undertaken. Isotope ratios in common water types – raised bog, confined groundwater, unconfined groundwater and surface water – were measured. We found characteristic signatures of isotope ratios for each of these four water types. The average isotope ratios of different water types ranged from −80.8 to −68.3‰ for δ2H and −11.46 to −8.76‰ for δ18O, with standard deviations from 18 to 25‰ and 0.10 to 1.59‰, respectively. A δ18O isoscape for the shallow groundwater in the Baltic Artesian Basin

The study presents a shallow groundwater isoscape for the Baltic region, which covers the major part of the Baltic Artesian Basin (BAB). BAB is an important palaeogroundwater reservoir, but prior to this study, little has been known about the spatial variability of δD and δ18O values in modern precipitation input across the region. To overcome this limitation, we hypothesized that the isotopic composition of shallow groundwater in the BAB could be used as a proxy for the mean weighted annual isotopic composition of local precipitation. Application of the SWAP model to predict impact of climate change on soil water balance in a Sicilian vineyard

In Sicily, the increasing scarcity of quality water is leading to irrigation with saline water in soils having a considerable susceptibility to salinization and degradation. In this paper, water flow and solute transport in a Sicilian irrigated soil was simulated by using the SWAP model, and the simulated results compared to measured values of soil moisture and salinity. Line mixing in the ν1 and 2ν2 isotropic Raman Q-branch of CO2 perturbed by argon and helium

0021-9606; The shapes of the ν1 and 2ν2 isotropic Raman Q-branch of CO2 perturbed by argon and helium have been measured by Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy (SRS) or coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) techniques. The data have been successfully analyzed with an energy corrected sudden (ECS) approximation model based on basic rates determined independently. Finally comparison of the present data with time resolved double resonance experiments allows us to discuss the physical origin of the two empirical constants which account for the shift and broadening of the branch due to vibrational effects. Solid state fermentation (SSF) is a biotechnological process particularly well adapted to the treatment of vegetable biomass. Coarse-Grained Barrier Trees of Fitness Landscapes

Recent literature suggests that local optima in fitness landscapes are clustered, which offers an explanation of why perturbation-based metaheuristics often fail to find the global optimum: they become trapped in a sub-optimal cluster. We introduce a method to extract and visualize the global organization of these clusters in form of a barrier tree. Barrier trees have been used to visualize the barriers between local optima basins in fitness landscapes. Ecology and technological capability of lactic acid bacteria isolated during Grillo grape vinification in the Marsala production area

Grapes of the “Grillo” variety, used to produce Marsala wine, were harvested from five vineyards with different climatic and agronomic parameters, in order to obtain a first mapping of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inhabiting the production area. Marsala base wine production was followed at a large-scale, and also two experimental vinifications, with different lysozyme and SO2 concentrations and in combination, were carried out at pilot-plant scale. LAB communities and conventional chemical parameters were periodically analysed. Erucic acid metabolism in rat liver. A combined biochemical and radioautographical study.

Metabolism of erucic acid was studied in rat liver in comparison with oleic acid in relation with diet lipids. Rats were fed for 3 or 60 days a balanced diet containing 30% of the calories of either rapeseed oil rich in erucic acid or sunflower seed oil rich in linoleic acid. They were intravenously injected with tritiated erucic or oleic acid. After 1 or 15 min, the radioactivity recovered in liver lipids was 9 to 26% whatever the diet or the acid injected.
