The taint of torture and the brazilian legal system
2019
In Brazil, the practice of torture intertwines deeply with its own history. The literature on the subject has had a greater intensification on its registers during the Dictatorial Regime (1964 to 1985). In spite of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, Brazil only makes efforts to investigate the crimes of torture of this period to comply with the provisions of the United Nations in 2011. Within this scenario, the NationalTruth Commission (Law 12.528, of November 2011) was created with the purpose of clarifying the facts and circumstances of cases concerning human rights violations, as well as the Law on Access to Information (Law 12.527 of November 2011), which have regulated the constitutio…

Gastroezofageālā atviļņa slimība un tās ārstēšanai paredzēto medikamentu aprite triju Latvijas pilsētu aptiekās
2018
The Tapeworm and Maria Callas' Diet: A Mystery Revealed
2022
Maria Callas’ diet, also known as the tapeworm diet, is a non-food-based hazardous treatment. This study aims to justify whether Maria Callas used this treatment for weight loss. To investigate this, we searched in the ‘white’, ‘grey’, and ‘black’ literature. The historical facts about the use of tapeworm pills seem to be inconsistent and include fake news. In the case of Maria Callas, it has been confirmed by her biography and personal communications that she was diagnosed with a beef tapeworm due to eating uncooked meat. This discredits the hypothesis that she consumed tapeworm pills.
Relevance of air-to-liquid mass ratio effect on final granule properties of an Enalapril maleate formulation.
2011
In the production of enalapril maleate tablets, the granulation process is the most crucial step. Numerous variables are known to influence the fluid bed granulation process and thus the final granule quality. In this study a novel descriptor for the nozzle parameter "air-to-liquid mass ratio" is presented. Granules manufacturing processes were designed by application of statistical experimental design. The influence of the critical process parameter (CPP)--air-to-liquid mass ratio--on pharmaceutic properties of granules was studied. Air-to-liquid mass ratio can be considered as important variable influencing the droplet size of atomized liquid binder solution.A significant influence of air-…
Tonic inhibitory action by nitric oxide on spontaneous mechanical activity in rat proximal colon: involvement of cyclic GMP and apamin-sensitive K+ c…
1999
The cellular mechanisms by which endogenous nitric oxide (NO) modulates spontaneous motility were investigated in rat isolated proximal colon. The mechanical activity was detected as changes in intraluminal pressure. Apamin (1–100 nM) produced a concentration-dependent increase in the amplitude of the spontaneous pressure waves. The maximal contractile effect was of the same degree as that produced by Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (100 μM) and the joint application of apamin plus L-NAME had no additive effects. Apamin (0.1 μM) reduced the inhibitory effects (i.e. reduction in the amplitude of the pressure waves) induced by sodium nitroprusside (SNP) (1 nM–10 μM) or 8-Br-cyclic G…
ACE inhibitor potentiation of bradykinin-induced venoconstriction
1997
1. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors exert their cardiovascular effects not only by preventing the formation of angiotensin II (AII), but also by promoting the accumulation of bradykinin in or at the vessel wall. In addition, certain ACE inhibitors have been shown to augment the vasodilator response to bradykinin, presumably by an interaction at the level of the B2 receptor. We have investigated whether this is a specific effect of the ACE inhibitor class of compounds in isolated endothelium-denuded segments of the rabbit jugular vein where bradykinin elicits a constrictor response which is exclusively mediated by activation of the B2 receptor. 2. Moexiprilat and ramiprilat (< …
Phytochemistry of Weigela x “kosteriana variegata” (Caprifoliaceae)
2018
One new triterpene glycoside 3- O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→4)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-arabinopyranosyloleanolic acid, was isolated from Weigela x “kosteriana variegata” (Caprifoliaceae), with three known ones. Their structures were characterized by a combination of mass spectrometry and 1D and 2D NMR spectrocopic techniques including 1H- and 13C NMR, COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HSQC, and HMBC experiments. The toxicological properties of some glycosides were determined with a zebrafish-based assay. The results show that the most active compounds were toxic to the larvae in the range of 1 μM.
Activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase by YC-1 in aortic smooth muscle but not in ventricular myocardium from rat
1997
1 The effects of YC-1 (3-(5′-hydroxymethyl-2′-furyl)-1-benzyl indazole), an activator of soluble guanylyl cyclase, on tension, levels of cyclic GMP and cyclic AMP, and cardiac L-type Ca2+-current (ICa(L)) were investigated in aortic smooth muscle and ventricular heart muscle from rat. 2 YC-1 (0.1–30 μM) induced a concentration-dependent relaxation in aortic rings precontracted with phenylephrine (3 μM). The relaxant effects of YC-1 were reversed by 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (30 μM; ODQ), potentiated by zaprinast (10 μM) and antagonized by Rp-8-Br-cGMPS (100 μM). 3 In ventricular heart muscle strips, YC-1 (30 μM) exhibited no effects on force of contraction (Fc) in the abse…
