Yeasts in Birds

Wild animals, particularly birds, play a relevant role in disseminating microscopic organisms, including yeasts and filamentous fungi. The ecology of yeasts associated with birds has been studied mainly for the urban avifauna, and little is known about yeasts associated with wild birds including migratory species. Recent findings on the adaptation and persistence of yeasts in animals suggest that birds can play an important role in the ecology and distribution of yeasts.

Epigenetic regulators are increasingly recognized as relevant modulators in the immune and nervous system. The class of sirtuins consists of NAD+-dependent histone deacetylases that regulate transcription. Adaptation of gene loci to heterochromatin in the course of Drosophila evolution is associated with insulator proteins.

AbstractPericentromeric heterochromatin is generally composed of repetitive DNA forming a transcriptionally repressive environment. Dozens of genes were embedded into pericentromeric heterochromatin during evolution of Drosophilidae lineage while retaining activity. However, factors that contribute to insusceptibility of gene loci to transcriptional silencing remain unknown. A specific prelimbic-nucleus accumbens pathway controls resilience versus vulnerability to food addiction

Food addiction is linked to obesity and eating disorders and is characterized by a loss of behavioral control and compulsive food intake. Here, using a food addiction mouse model, we report that the lack of cannabinoid type-1 receptor in dorsal telencephalic glutamatergic neurons prevents the development of food addiction-like behavior, which is associated with enhanced synaptic excitatory transmission in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). "Islands of divergence" in the Atlantic cod genome represent polymorphic chromosomal rearrangements

- In several species genetic differentiation across environmental gradients or between geographically separate populations has been reported to center at “genomic islands of divergence,” resulting in heterogeneous differentiation patterns across genomes. Here, genomic regions of elevated divergence were observed on three chromosomes of the highly mobile fish Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) within geographically fine-scaled coastal areas. Effect of video capture time on sperm kinematic parameters in breeding boars

Abstract Computer Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) technology is being a common tool in the seminal analysis for seminal doses production in farm animals. The aim of the present work was to define the optimal capturing time for a correct evaluation of boar sperm motility. Six sexually mature boars from the Topigs Lines, were used as semen donors. ISASv1 CASA-Mot system was used with an image acquisition rate of 50 Hz for two seconds capturing. Obtained video frames were fragmented into four segments corresponding to 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 s. Evolution of the immune system influences speciation rates in teleost fishes.

Teleost fishes constitute the most species-rich vertebrate clade and exhibit extensive genetic and phenotypic variation, including diverse immune defense strategies. The genomic basis of a particularly aberrant strategy is exemplified by Atlantic cod, in which a loss of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) II functionality coincides with a marked expansion of MHC I genes. Through low-coverage genome sequencing (9–39×), assembly and comparative analyses for 66 teleost species, we show here that MHC II is missing in the entire Gadiformes lineage and thus was lost once in their common ancestor.
