Locating the nodes of outdoor wireless sensor networks (WSNs) using (tri)lateration with a low-cost ranging technique, such as the received signal strength indicator (RSSI), often results in inaccurate location estimates. This can mostly be explained by the combined effect of distance estimate errors and localization geometry, both of which are subject to the reference nodes used. Adaptive smoothing spline using non-convex penalties

We propose a new adaptive penalty for smoothing via penalized splines. The new form of adaptive penalization is based on penalizing the differences of the coefficients of adjacent bases, using non-convex penalties. This makes possible to estimate curves with varying amounts of smoothness. Comparisons with respect to some competitors are presented.

Maģistra darbā aprakstīti redzes sistēmas adaptācijas un kontrasta uztveres procesi. Tika kvalitatīvi un kvantitatīvi pētīta kontrasta uztveres izmaiľa laika gaitā pēc adaptācijas uz augsta kontrasta sinusoidālo režģi, kā arī noteikta kopējā adaptācijas pakāpes atkarība no pielietotu stimulu parametriem. Literatūras apskatā ir apkopota informācija par laika periodu no 1965. līdz 2014. gadam. Maģistra darbs uzrakstīts latviešu valodā, tā apjoms ir 75 lpp. Darbs satur 36 attēlus, 13 tabulas, 7 pielikumus un tajā tika izmantoti 58 literatūras avoti.
Climate Resilience Pathways of Rural Households. Evidence from Ethiopia

This paper explores the resilience capacity of rural Ethiopian households after the drought shock occurred in 2011. The work develops an original empirical framework able to capture the policy and socio-economic determinants of households’ resilience capacity by making parametric statistical assumption on the resilience distribution. To this end, the analysis employs a two-wave representative panel dataset aligned with detailed weather records while controlling for a large set of household- and community-level characteristics.
