Skolēnu sociālās adaptācijas veicināšanas iespējas pirmajā klasē
2022
Transformative direction of innovation and measurement of uncaptured GDP in the digital economy
2017
The Internet has dramatically changed business dynamics and our daily lives by providing extraordinary services and welfare never anticipated before. However, productivity in industrialized countries has confronted an apparent decline. The ICT advanced firms and countries are suffering with low marginal productivity of their ICT investments. This reveals the two-faced nature of ICT and productivity paradox in the digital economy. With the progression of technology and transition from commodity- oriented to information society, the consumers’ preferences are believed to be shifted beyond economic value. The digitization has promoted the free and un- monetized consumption of digital goods and…

Applications of Music for Migrants
2019
The importance of music for health and wellbeing dates back to antiquity. Its role in society as a whole, but also on an individual level, has remained seminal, and its therapeutic efficacy is indisputable whether it is part of larger group-based activities or for personal emotion regulation. Music therapy is an eminent resource in building cohesion in and between groups. Music is often considered a universal language; this, combined with its capability to address psychological, physical, social, and spiritual issues, lends itself to therapeutic appositeness. This can be seen in individuals and groups who have undergone huge upheaval, whether geographical or otherwise. This chapter addresse…
Influence of cultural differences on Finnish-Chinese cooperation at UPM-Kymmene's three Asian sales offices

Adapting to a Finnish workplace : case : occupational immigration of Chinese metal workers.
2009
The aim of the study was to investigate intercultural adaptation of occupational immigrants to Finnish working life and culture and identify factors that support or hinder the adaptation process. Due to demographic changes in the society and the increasing number of foreigners in Finnish workplaces, the study of occupational immigration is a very contemporary topic. The study was qualitative in nature. 13 Chinese metal workers were interviewed in small groups using a translator in Mandarin Chinese. The respondents had arrived in Finland at different times between 6 and 16 months prior to the interview. The research was conducted with the help of Mänttä Regional Vocational Education Centre w…
Potential for adaptation to climate change: family-level variation in fitness-related traits and their responses to heat waves in a snail population.
2017
Background On-going global climate change poses a serious threat for natural populations unless they are able to evolutionarily adapt to changing environmental conditions (e.g. increasing average temperatures, occurrence of extreme weather events). A prerequisite for evolutionary change is within-population heritable genetic variation in traits subject to selection. In relation to climate change, mainly phenological traits as well as heat and desiccation resistance have been examined for such variation. Therefore, it is important to investigate adaptive potential under climate change conditions across a broader range of traits. This is especially true for life-history traits and defences ag…
Adaptation of a tropical butterfly to a temperate climate
2018
Developmental plasticity enables organisms to cope with environmental heterogeneity, such as seasonal variation in climatic conditions, and is thought to affect a species’ capability to adapt to environments with novel seasonal and ecological dynamics. We studied developmental plasticity of the widespread tropical butterfly, Bicyclus safitza, which reaches the southern edge of its distribution in the temperate zone of South Africa. In wet–dry seasonal environments in tropical Africa, adults of Bicyclus butterflies are present all year round and exhibit discrete seasonal forms in alternating generations. We demonstrate that a population that colonized a more temperate climate region has adop…
Global urban environmental change drives adaptation in white clover
2022
Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T19:52:06Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-03-18 Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied am…
