Participation in Social Media: Studying Explicit and Implicit Forms of Participation in Communicative Social Networks

The diverse forms of participation in social media raise many methodological and ethical issues that should be acknowledged in research. In this paper, participation in social media is studied by utilising the framework of explicit and implicit participation. The focus is on the communicative and communal aspects of social media. The aim of the paper is to promote the reconsideration of what constitutes participation when online users create connections rather than content. The underlying argument is that research on social media and the development of methods should concentrate more on implicit forms of participation.

This paper explores climate change adaptation within national policy priorities in a least developed country (LDC). The premise of the article is that when considering food security, climate is an exogenous trigger, while the deeper causes lie in social problems. Therefore, adaptation is subordinate to poverty alleviation. The paper examines how these two goals, climate adaptation and poverty alleviation, can be combined. Katru gadu Latvijas Universitātē pieaug starptautisko studentu skaits. Dzīvesvietas un kultūras maiņa ārvalstu studentiem var būt milzīgs izaicinājums un šīs izmaiņas var izraisīt kultūras adaptācijas stresu, kas savukārt var izraisīt fiziskas, psiholoģiskas un sociālās problēmas. Šī maģistra darba mērķis ir noskaidrot, kā Latvijas Universitātes angliski runājošo starptautisko grādu studentu stāstījumos ir atspoguļoti viņu kultūras adaptācijas izaicinājumi un kā viņi tiek galā ar šiem izaicinājumiem.
