Modeling of a Shared Mooring System for a Dual-Spar Configuration

2020

Abstract As floating wind turbines become more technically mature, the development of floating wind farms is under way. Cost-effective solutions are desired to reduce the mooring costs. The concept of a shared mooring system has been proposed for this purpose. This work presents a method to model the shared mooring system for a dual-spar configuration. By applying the theory in elastic catenary of cable structures, a shared line can be modelled. To verify the method, a dual-spar system is modelled in a multibody simulation tool, in which two floating wind turbines are connected via a shared line. Static analyses are performed by using the present method and the simulation tool. Further, a s…

Architetture essenziali nella Valle dei Templi di Agrigento

2021

Small architectures can help to reinstate a daily use of the archaeological park, no longer considered as a specialised fence. The projects feed on iconographic memories that indicate where and how to look at. The comparison between the historical views and the current state shows some changes. Today the contemporary city surrounds the temples, arising among billboards, behind traffic lights. Unlike the postcards' logic where the ruins appear isolated, in the wake of a generic polemic against the recent transformations, the article aims to focus on a new aesthetic where contemporary architecture narrates a dialogue between different parts, offering new paths of approach to the ruins.

Gemelle diverse. Las iglesias de la Santísima Trinidad de Delia y de San Nicolò Regale en Trápani, Sicilia

2019

[EN] The work develops the necessary phases before arriving at a restoration project. The main objectives are: the study and historical-architectural analysis, the knowledge of the current management and enhancement of the two churches, the proposal of strategies to show the value of the remains of the past and to educate the new generations and the development of a method. In addition to the data collection “in situ” relative to the current conditions of the elements, their state of conservation and the documentation of existing pathologies, an architectural survey has been carried out to perform the comparative analysis of both churches and the proposals of action. The two architectures a…

The Role of Big Data in Addressing Societal Challenges: A Systematic Mapping Study

2019

Part 2: Big Data Analytics; International audience; Big data has recently become the focus of academic and corporate investigation due to its high potential in generating business and social value. We have done a systematic mapping of the literature related to big data and its applications leading to social change through the lens of social innovation. The search strategy initially resulted in 593 papers, and after applying inclusion exclusion criteria a total of 156 papers were mapped; 59% of which were identified as empirical studies. This mapping investigated the publication frequency of the studies, research approach and contributions, research areas and article distribution per journal…

The Source Value of Arabic Typikon-Manuscripts as Testimonials for the Byzantinization of the Melkites

2021

With the expansion of Islam, the patriarchates of Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria were divided from the Byzantine Empire. The Orthodox Christians there still defined themselves as Byzantine Orthodox and began to adapt their liturgical customs by adopting Byzantine liturgical books. When Greek was not understood any longer, they began to translate and copy their liturgical books, thereby creating their own branch of tradition, which is marked by multilingualism, reception of their own Bible tradition as well as the exclusion of “neo-martyrs” from their calendar of saints.

Incorporating digital self-services into integrated mental health care:a physician’s perspective

2018

PurposeThis paper aims to enhance the current understanding of digital self-services (computerized cognitive behavioral therapy [cCBT]) and how they could be better incorporated into integrated mental health care from the physician’s perspective. Service marketing and information systems literature are combined in the context of mental health-care delivery.Design/methodology/approachAn online survey of 412 Finnish physicians was undertaken to understand physicians’ acceptance of cCBT. The study applies thematic analysis and structural equation modeling to answer its research questions.FindingsAdopting a service marketing perspective helps understand how digital self-services can be incorpor…

Revisiting the patient–physician relationship under the lens of value co-creation and defensive medicine

2021

PurposeThis study formulates a new archetypical model that describes and re-interprets the patient–physician relationship from the perspective of two widespread phenomena in the healthcare delivery process: value co-creation (VCC) and defensive medicine (DM).Design/methodology/approachGrounded in the existing literature on VCC and DM, the authors designed and conducted 20 in-depth interviews with doctors (and patients) about their past relationships with patients (and doctors). After putting the recorded interviews through qualitative analysis with a three-level coding activity, the authors built an empirically informed model to classify patient–physician relationships.FindingsThe authors i…

Explaining Extreme Mobile Experiences

2013

Extreme service or product experiences have a major influence on perceptions and behavior. Therefore, numerous studies have collected such single positive and negative experiences to understand which factors affect (dis)satisfaction, value, and quality. However, most of these studies lack the process approach needed for understanding why and how these experiences take place and proceed, whereas the context of mobile applications has also remained highly unexplored. This study aims to fill the gap by presenting the mobile experience process model with empirical evidence of extreme experiences from 606 actual mobile application users. With the help of the model and the detailed descriptions o…

Exploiting Valve Timing for Pneumatic Energy Savings

2018

This research paper aims at addressing solutions that reduce air consumption in generic pneumatic systems used for pick-and-place operations. The investigation considers different system architectures both with a single control valve and two control valves arranged according to an independent metering configuration. Suitable control strategies are then proposed exploiting multiple timings to shut off the non-proportional switching valve(s). The resulting scenarios are experimentally evaluated on a dedicated test-bed. The main conclusion is that reduction of air consumption up to 73% is possible in comparison to the state-of-the-art layout for the reference application. Numerical simulations…

Parallelization of adaptive MC integrators

1997

Monte Carlo (MC) methods for numerical integration seem to be embarassingly parallel on first sight. When adaptive schemes are applied in order to enhance convergence however, the seemingly most natural way of replicating the whole job on each processor can potentially ruin the adaptive behaviour. Using the popular VEGAS-Algorithm as an example an economic method of semi-micro parallelization with variable grain-size is presented and contrasted with another straightforward approach of macro-parallelization. A portable implementation of this semi-micro parallelization is used in the xloops-project and is made publicly available.
