Design for all strategies for the Palermo's Arab and Norman UNESCO itinerary

2021

Sicily, with its seven sites recognized by UNESCO, is the Italian region that can boast the highest number of them: the last elected is Palermo, which since 2015 is also part of the prestigious World Heritage List. The Palermo itinerary unfolds through eight stages: Royal Palace, Palatine Chapel, Churches of San Giovanni degli Eremiti, Martorana, San Cataldo, Cathedral, Zisa Castle, Bridge of mmiraglio to which the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale. However, Palermo has critical issues that make the tourist route difficult and uncomfortable, not easily accessible due to the limited physical connections that make it difficult for both citizens and tourists with disabilities to move from one …

Evaluation of the indoor comfort of the Arabic-Norman architecture for its valorization

2018

Sustainability focused decision-making in building renovation

2017

Abstract An overview of recent research related to building renovation has revealed that efforts to date do not address sustainability issues comprehensively. The question then arises in regard to the holistic sustainability objectives within building renovation context. In order to deal with this question, the research adopts a multi-dimensional approach involving literature review, exploration of existing assessment methods and methodologies, individual and focus group interviews, and application of Soft Systems Methodologies (SSM) with Value Focused Thinking (VFT). In doing so, appropriate data about sustainability objectives have been collected and structured, and subsequently verified …

The vegetation for mitigating the microclimate and designing livable and healthy public spaces in Palermo City Centre

2018

Urban morphology and increasing building density play a key role in the overall heat and energy balance of our cities. The urban environment and CO2 emissions resulting from human activities cause a local increase of temperature, a phenomenon known as Urban Heat Island (UHI). This is also due to the reduction of vegetation in urban areas. The benefits that green spaces have in urban planning have been widely acknowledged. In particular, in temperate and hot contexts, plants help to reduce the extreme summer temperatures, improving people’s outdoor and indoor thermal comfort and, at the same time, reducing the buildings’ energy demand for cooling. The way plants affect urban climates is gene…

Geo-visual analytics for urban design in the context of future Internet

2009

The internet, where much of the information has reference to location, together with the latest generation of geographical web services, represent a very large information space that can be used for planning and design. The wealth of information accessible, which requires new forms of interaction and management of the data available, has brought in recent year to the growth of the domain of visual analytics. In addition, the availability of 3D geobrowsers provides the technological means for interactive 3D environments which can be used to access large-scale geographical information. This technological scenario is paving the way to 3D web-based, geo-visual analytics tools for land planning …

Architetture lignee per lo spettacolo tra XVII e XVIII secolo a Palermo (Theatral wooden architectures in Palermo during XVIII and XIX centuries)

2016

Liberty winter gardens in Palermo: contamination from solar design

2020

At the end of the 19th century, the city of Palermo boasted a tradition of steel elements that could include the most beautiful railings and light steel structures of the time. The paper shows how the technological, formal and spatial aspects of the metallic construction was derived by the application of Central Europe areas examples to the local reality, providing notions on designs, experimentations and originalities. Canopies, verandas, winter gardens and orangeries are architectural elements in iron and glass that represent an added value for the building, they improve the life quality of the people who live there. In particular, in the Liberty architecture these elements took shape thr…

Bio-inspired consolidants derived from crystalline nanocellulose for decayed wood

2018

Abstract Novel bio-inspired materials derived from crystalline nanocellulose (CNC) have been tested as wood consolidants. A suspension of CNC, produced by acid hydrolysis of cellulose and used as such or mixed with lignin and/or siloxane derivatives (PDMS), was applied on rotted wood samples of Norway spruce. X-Ray diffraction analysis on CNC powder showed high crystallinity index. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement indicated a nearly uniform particle size distribution with an average hydrodynamic diameter for pure CNC smaller than that in the mixtures. Raman and FTIR spectroscopies suggested interactions between lignin, PDMS and CNC components. The storage modulus of wood samples, …

Traditional Architecture and seismic security. Earthquake in the Madonie inner mountain area of Sicily: damages and construction techniques

2017

Optical Performance Evaluation of DSSC-integrated Glassblocks for Active Building Façades

2015

The paper outlines the results of a research, carried out at the University of Palermo, aimed at the assessment of the energy performance of a novel glassblock integrated with 3rd generation Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC), which, when installed into panels, allows obtaining translucent building envelopes able to provide high thermal and visual comfort levels while producing clean energy. The paper focuses on the optical analyses of four different configurations of DSSC-integrated glassblocks, carried out by using the optical design software Zemax. The values of optical transmittance, the solar factor and the electric power – calculated for each configuration – are discussed.
