Hospitalization for self-harm during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in France: A nationwide retrospective observational cohort study

2021

ABSTRACT Background Little is known to date about the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on self-harm. Methods The number of hospitalizations for self-harm (ICD-10 codes X60-X84) in France from 1st January to 31st August 2020 (including a two-month confinement) was compared to the same periods in 2017–2019. Statistical methods comprised Poisson regression, Cox regression and Student's t-test, plus Spearman's correlation test relating to spatial analysis of hospitalizations. Outcomes There were 53,583 self-harm hospitalizations in France during January to August 2020. Compared to the same period in 2019, this represents an overall 8·5% decrease (Relative Risk [95% Confidence Interval] = 0·91 [0·90–…

Size and survival of the hospitality industry: The case of Spain

2020

The aim of this study is to analyse the determinants of survival of the hospitality industry. The study pays particular attention to the size of the enterprises since the majority of Spanish hospitality enterprises are microenterprises. Two approaches are considered. The first approach uses a binary choice model to analyse the determinants of survival probability as well as the Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition, proposed by Yun (2004), to quantify the difference between enterprises according to their size and what proportion of this difference is due to observed factors or unobserved factors. The second approach is a survival analysis, carried out through the Cox proportional hazard model, whic…

Alignment between standardized assessments and academic standards: The case of the Saber Mathematics Test in Colombia

2013

In this study the concept of alignment is analyzed by presenting the results of a study that examines the degree of alignment between a standardized mathematics assessment and a set of academic standards. The alignment was examined using the Webb model and the results suggest that the degree of alignment between standardized assessments and academic content standards is not the most appropriate and therefore the results should be interpreted with great caution and stakeholders must be very careful with the type of decisions that are made based on the results of these types of assessments.

Corporate Governance Mechanisms for Monitoring or Empowering CEOS? A Study of Chinese Listed Firms

2008

This study examines the impact of governance mechanisms in monitoring or empowering top executives on firm performance. We distinguish between two competing theories, namely agency theory and stewardship theory, which hold conflicting assumptions about CEOs behaviour and hence offer different recommendations concerning corporate governance structure. We conduct an empirical study based on 837 publicly listed companies in China over the period of 2005-2007, the findings of this study provide strong support for stewardship theory. The results suggest that governance mechanisms that can empower CEOs work better in the Chinese context, specifically, a longer CEO tenure and lower board independe…

European Political Science and Global Knowledge

2018

In this chapter, the author maintains that rankings of universities and their social carriers participate in the relatively successful practical realization of the academic standards they seek to codify and of the shaping of reality according to the criteria they promote. In this sense, global university rankings are becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy, a prediction that becomes true through positive feedback of varying intensity. They have succeeded in establishing through quantitative objectification certain types of equivalences between scientific excellence and numerical indicators. The reasons for their success are their performative efficiency (‘scientific’, quantitative) and the prac…

The effect of Shallow Tillage on soil erosion in a semi-arid vineyard

2019

Soil erosion has been considered a threat for semi-arid lands due to the removal of solid materials by water and wind. Although water erosion is currently considered the most important process of soil degradation, a growing interest has been drawn to the impact of soil tillage. Although numerous studies on tillage erosion have been carried out on arable land using a moldboard plow, a chisel, and a tandem disc for different crops, there are no studies on the effect of shallow tillage on soil redistribution in vineyards. The aim of this work was to evaluate the soil tillage erosion rate in a vineyard using a 13C natural abundance tracer. A strip of soil (C3-C soil) was removed, mixed with C4-…

The impact of the age of vines on soil hydraulic conductivity in vineyards in eastern Spain

2017

Soil infiltration processes manage runoff generation, which in turn affects soil erosion. There is limited information on infiltration rates. In this study, the impact of vine age on soil bulk density (BD) and hydraulic conductivity (Ks) was assessed on a loam soil tilled by chisel plough. Soil sampling was conducted in the inter row area of six vineyards, which differed by the age from planting: 0 (Age 0; just planted), 1, 3, 6, 13, and 25 years (Age 1, Age 3, Age 6, Age 13, and Age 25, respectively). The One Ponding Depth (OPD) approach was applied to ring infiltration data to estimate soil Ks with an α* parameter equal to 0.012 mm-1. Soil bulk density for Age 0 was about 1.5 times greate…

Relation between Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor Activity and Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Diseases in a Large Population Sample.

2021

Abstract Objective Tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) is a potent anticoagulant protein in the extrinsic coagulation pathway. In the present study, we aim to identify the cardiovascular determinants for total TFPI activity and its association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and total mortality. Methods Total TFPI activity was assessed in a selection of the population-based Gutenberg Health Study (n = 5,000). Statistical analysis was performed to identify the determinants for total TFPI activity as well as the associations with CVD and mortality. Results Multivariable linear regression analysis identified smoking (β 0.095 [0.054–0.136]) as a positive determinant for total TFPI activity…
