Incidence of symptomatic venous thromboembolism following hospitalization for coronavirus disease 2019: Prospective results from a multi-center study
2021
Background Thrombosis and pulmonary embolism appear to be major causes of mortality in hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. However, few studies have focused on the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) after hospitalization for COVID-19. Methods In this multi-center study, we followed 1529 COVID-19 patients for at least 45 days after hospital discharge, who underwent routine telephone follow-up. In case of signs or symptoms of pulmonary embolism (PE) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT), they were invited for an in-hospital visit with a pulmonologist. The primary outcome was symptomatic VTE within 45 days of hospital discharge. Results Of 1529 COVID-19 patients discharge…
Effect of Lung Recruitment and Titrated Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) vs Low PEEP on Mortality in Patients With Acute Respiratory Distress …
2017
Importance The effects of recruitment maneuvers and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) titration on clinical outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain uncertain. Objective To determine if lung recruitment associated with PEEP titration according to the best respiratory-system compliance decreases 28-day mortality of patients with moderate to severe ARDS compared with a conventional low-PEEP strategy. Design, Setting, and Participants Multicenter, randomized trial conducted at 120 intensive care units (ICUs) from 9 countries from November 17, 2011, through April 25, 2017, enrolling adults with moderate to severe ARDS. Interventions An experimental strat…
Association between antithrombotic treatment and outcomes at 1-year follow-up in patients with atrial fibrillation: the EORP-AF General Long-Term Reg…
2019
Aims In recent years, stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) has radically changed, with increasing use of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs). Contemporary European data on AF thromboprophylaxis are needed. Methods and results We report 1-year follow-up data from the EURObservational Research Programme in Atrial Fibrillation (EORP-AF) General Long-Term Registry. Outcomes were assessed according to antithrombotic therapy. At 1-year follow-up, 9663 (88.0%) patients had available data for analysis: 586 (6.1%) were not treated with any antithrombotic; 681 (7.0%) with antiplatelets only; 4066 (42.1%) with vitamin K antagonist (VKA) only; 3167 (32.8%) with …
Cocaine abuse determination by ion mobility spectrometry using molecular imprinting
2016
A cocaine-based molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) has been produced by bulk polymerization and employed as selective solid-phase extraction support for the determination of cocaine in saliva samples by ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). The most appropriate conditions for washing and elution of cocaine from MIPs were studied and MIPs were characterized in terms of analyte binding capacity, reusability in water and saliva analysis, imprinting factor and selectivity were established and compared with non-imprinted polymers. The proposed MIP-IMS method provided a LOD of 18μgL-1 and quantitative recoveries for blank saliva samples spiked from 75 to 500μgL-1 cocaine. Oral fluid samples were collec…
The moderator effect of sex on attitude toward communication, emotional intelligence, and empathy in the nursing field
2017
Objectives: to analyze differences in the variables for the object of this study (attitude toward communication, emotional intelligence, and empathy) according to sex; verify correlations among variables between men and women and analyze regression models according to sex. Method: the ATC was used to measure attitudes toward communication; the Jefferson Scale of Empathy was used to measure empathy; and the Trait Meta Mood Scale 24 was used to measure emotional intelligence. The sample was composed of 450 nurses working in 7 hospitals located in Valencia, Spain. The t-test for independent samples was used to verify whether there were statistically significant differences, together with a pri…
Overexpression of p63 is associated with radiation resistance and prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma
2010
Summary Background : The tumor suppressor homologue p63 is expressed in basal and parabasal layers of intraoral mucosa. Full length transcripts with transactivational domain (TA forms) present with homology to p53 and implicate functions governing cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis control. To date studies show an increase of p63 expression in oral dysplasia and additionally high expression levels correlated with poor prognosis for patients with OSCC, whereas a possible link to radiation resistance of tumors has not been investigated yet. In the present study we tested the hypothesis for p63 being a marker of radioresistance and overall survival in OSCC. Methods : p63 Express…
Comparison of prognostic models in patients with advanced Hodgkin disease
2001
Several prognostic systems have been elaborated for patients with Hodgkin disease (HD) over the last 12 years, but early identification of a reasonably large group of both low and high risk, advanced stage patients remains unsatisfactory.Seven well known models were applied to 516 patients with advanced HD, with 315 patients used for the study sample and 201 patients used for the test sample. Individual performances as well as joint performances were analyzed univariately and multivariately in relation to overall survival, recurrence free survival, and time to treatment failure by means of a proportional hazards model.None of the models identified a group containing10% of patients from the …
Impact of relative dose intensity of oxaliplatin in adjuvant therapy among stage III colon cancer patients on early recurrence: a retrospective cohor…
2020
Abstract Background Oxaliplatin-based therapy with FOLFOX-4 or CAPOX administered over 6 months remains the standard adjuvant treatment for stage III colon cancer (CC) patients. However, many patients experience dose reduction or early termination of chemotherapy due to oxaliplatin toxicity, which may increase the risk of early recurrence. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between the relative dose intensity of oxaliplatin (RDI-O) and early recurrence among stage III CC patients. Methods The study included 365 patients treated at five oncology centers in Poland between 2000 and 2014. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate analysis…
Prognostic value of histopathologic parameters of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
1995
Background. The grading of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the esophagus as proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet proved to be prognostically significant. Therefore, the prognostic impact of various histologic parameters was investigated and compared with that of the WHO grading. Methods. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained tumor samples from 138 patients with SCC of the esophagus who underwent potentially curative resection (no residual tumor or distant metastases) were evaluated for the following histologic parameters: degree of keratinization, nuclear polymorphism, pattern of invasion, mitotic activity, and inflammatory response. The prognostic impact of these parameters…
Efficacy of ultrasound B-scan compared with physical examination in follow-up of melanoma patients
2001
BACKGROUND The value of ultrasound B-scan for routine follow-up of melanoma patients still is not generally accepted. Therefore, the authors compared the efficacy of physical examination (PE) with ultrasound B-scan (UBS) for detection of regional tumor recurrence in melanoma patients. The aim of the current study was to evaluate whether early detection of metastases improves relapse-free and overall survival. METHODS For a period of 4 years, 829 consecutive melanoma patients were followed prospectively. Physical examination of 3011 patients and concomitant UBS of in-transit routes and regional lymph node basins were performed. Suspicious lesions were diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cyto…
