Impact of Safety-Related Dose Reductions or Discontinuations on Sustained Virologic Response in HCV-Infected Patients: Results from the GUARD-C Cohor…

2015

Background: Despite the introduction of direct-acting antiviral agents for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, peginterferon alfa/ribavirin remains relevant in many resource-constrained settings. The non-randomized GUARD-C cohort investigated baseline predictors of safety-related dose reductions or discontinuations (sr-RD) and their impact on sustained virologic response (SVR) in patients receiving peginterferon alfa/ribavirin in routine practice. Methods: A total of 3181 HCV-mono-infected treatment-naive patients were assigned to 24 or 48 weeks of peginterferon alfa/ribavirin by their physician. Patients were categorized by time-to-first sr-RD (Week 4/12). Detailed analyses of the i…

Congenital anomalies associated with trisomy 18 or trisomy 13: A registry-based study in 16 european countries, 2000-2011

2015

The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of trisomies 18 and 13 in Europe and the prevalence of associated anomalies. Twenty-five population-based registries in 16 European countries provided data from 2000-2011. Cases included live births, fetal deaths (20+ weeks' gestation), and terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomaly (TOPFAs). The prevalence of associated anomalies was reported in live births. The prevalence of trisomy 18 and trisomy 13 were 4.8 (95%CI: 4.7-5.0) and 1.9 (95%CI: 1.8-2.0) per 10,000 total births. Seventy three percent of cases with trisomy 18 or trisomy 13 resulted in a TOPFA. Amongst 468 live born babies with trisomy 18, 80% (76-83%) had a cardiac anomaly, …

A report of an international collaborative experiment to demonstrate the uniformity obtainable using DNA profiling techniques

1992

This paper describes a collaborative exercise intended to demonstrate whether uniformity of DNA profile results could be achieved between different European laboratories. It was shown that this goal can be obtained provided that a common protocol is followed (specifically the use of a common electrophoretic buffer as being the most important parameter). Generally, lower molecular weight loci (with lower molecular weight fragments) such as YNH24 perform better than higher molecular weight loci such as MS43a. The results of the exercise are discussed in relation to the objectives of the European DNA profiling group (EDNAP).

Atmospheric risks and climate change: didactic proposals for the Mediterranean region in middle and high school

2021

Direct and fast determination of polychlorinated biphenyls in contaminated soils and sediments by thermal desorption-gas chromatography-tandem mass s…

2019

Abstract A direct procedure based on thermal desorption-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (TD–GC–MS–MS) was developed for the fast extraction of seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from sediments and soils. PCBs were directly extracted, from 20 to 75 mg of sample, without any chemical pre-treatment or use of organic solvents, after the addition of 10 µL internal standard (PCB 195) in acetone. Sample treatment was totally automated. PCBs were extracted at 250 °C for 20 min, using a helium flow and the PCBs were trapped in a cryogenic Tenax trap at −10 °C. After that, analytes were directly desorbed at 270 °C and introduced to the GC–MS–MS system. Recoveries were established usin…

The determination of certain major and minor elements in geological samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Some interfer…

2000

Direct ICP-AES measurements of the digested geological standard reference material samples yielded the wrong information about their composition. The differences between certified and measured concentrations of the samples were due to the complicated sample matrix. The measured concentrations can be successfully corrected by using a multiple linear regression technique. The correction is based on the multiple regression line calculated from the analytical results at synthetic mixtures of matrix elements, where concentrations varied on five levels. There were no significant (P = 0.05) differences between certified and measured concentrations in standard reference materials after the correcti…

Turmoil at Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica): Degassing and eruptive processes inferred from high-frequency gas monitoring.

2016

Abstract Eruptive activity at Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica) has escalated significantly since 2014, causing airport and school closures in the capital city of San José. Whether or not new magma is involved in the current unrest seems probable but remains a matter of debate as ash deposits are dominated by hydrothermal material. Here we use high‐frequency gas monitoring to track the behavior of the volcano between 2014 and 2015 and to decipher magmatic versus hydrothermal contributions to the eruptions. Pulses of deeply derived CO2‐rich gas (CO2/Stotal > 4.5) precede explosive activity, providing a clear precursor to eruptive periods that occurs up to 2 weeks before eruptions, which are acc…

Outcomes for Geriatric Urolithiasis Patients aged ≥80 Years Compared to Patients in Their Seventies

2022

Abstract Background Demographic changes are leading to an increase in geriatric urolithiasis patients aged ≥70 yr. Published data regarding their management remain sparse. In particular, for the subgroup of patients aged ≥80 yr there is a lack of evidence supporting the hypothesis that stone-removing treatment is effective, safe, and beneficial. Objective To examine the efficiency and safety of stone-removing treatment in geriatric urolithiasis patients aged ≥80 yr compared to their younger geriatric counterparts aged 70–79 yr against the background of their respective life expectancy. Design, setting, and participants Data for the study cohort were extracted from an institutional review bo…
