Bypass of cell cycle arrest induced by transient DNMT1 post-transcriptional silencing triggers aneuploidy in human cells
2012
Abstract Background Aneuploidy has been acknowledged as a major source of genomic instability in cancer, and it is often considered the result of chromosome segregation errors including those caused by defects in genes controlling the mitotic spindle assembly, centrosome duplication and cell-cycle checkpoints. Aneuploidy and chromosomal instability has been also correlated with epigenetic alteration, however the molecular basis of this correlation is poorly understood. Results To address the functional connection existing between epigenetic changes and aneuploidy, we used RNA-interference to silence the DNMT1 gene, encoding for a highly conserved member of the DNA methyl-transferases. DNMT1…
MAD2 depletion triggers premature cellular senescence in human primary fibroblasts by activating a P53 pathway preventing aneuploid cells propagation.
2012
The spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) is a cellular surveillance mechanism that ensures faithful chromosome segregation during mitosis and its failure can result in aneuploidy. Previously, it was suggested that reduction of the MAD2 gene, encoding a major component of the SAC, induced aneuploidy in human tumor cells. However, tumor cell lines contain multiple mutations that might affect or exacerbate the cellular response to Mad2 depletion. Thus, the scenario resulting by Mad2 depletion in primary human cells could be different and more complex that the one depicted so far. We used primary human fibroblasts (IMR90) and epithelial breast cells (MCF10A) to gain further insight on the effects …
Imūnā atbilde pret HCV vīrusa ARFP proteīnu un HCV genomu core/ARFP reģiona sekvenču analīze
2017
C hepatīta vīruss (HCV) ir viens no galveniem smagu aknu slimību izraisītājiem, HCV hroniskā infekcija bieži beidzas ar aknu cirrozi un hepatocelulāro karcinomu. Saskaņā ar Pasaules Veselības Organizācijas datiem aptuveni 71 miljons cilvēku cieš no hroniskas HCV infekcijas. Katru gadu no HCV izraisītām slimībām mirst aptuveni 399000 cilvēku.
First record of Heptapleurum arboricola Hayata (Araliaceae) as a casual non-native woody plant in the Mediterranean area
2021
I report here the first record of Heptapleurum arboricola Hayata (syn. Schefflera arboricola (Hayata) Merr.) (Araliaceae) as a casual non-native plant throughout the Mediterranean area. I observed the natural regeneration in urban areas at Castellammare del Golfo, a small coastal town in north-west Sicily (Mediterranean Italy). Due to the lack of self-sustaining populations and the short-term observational period, Heptapleurum arboricola should be considered as a casual species according to the classification of non-native plants. The detection of early signs of naturalization of non-native plants is of crucial importance for the management and control of invasive species. The main abiotic …
The lifelong struggle of Finnish World War II veterans.
2014
Objectives: In many countries veterans from World War II are growing old. Research has shown that war experiences continue to impact those who have been involved in war for a long time. The present study targets old injured war veterans from World War II in Finland. The aim of this study was to produce knowledge of the impact of war experiences and injuries on the lifespan of Finnish war veterans.Method: The method used was grounded theory. Data were collected by interviewing 20 aged war veterans in their homes. Results: The analysis resulted in four categories, with also subcategories: (1) lost childhood and youth; (2) war traumas impacting life; (3) starting life from scratch; and (4) find…
La Grande Guerra racconta sul giornale "L'Ora"
2020
Impeded Dark Matter
2016
We consider dark matter models in which the mass splitting between the dark matter particles and their annihilation products is tiny. Compared to the previously proposed Forbidden Dark Matter scenario, the mass splittings we consider are much smaller, and are allowed to be either positive or negative. To emphasize this modification, we dub our scenario "Impeded Dark Matter". We demonstrate that Impeded Dark Matter can be easily realized without requiring tuning of model parameters. For negative mass splitting, we demonstrate that the annihilation cross-section for Impeded Dark Matter depends linearly on the dark matter velocity or may even be kinematically forbidden, making this scenario al…
Stellar structure models in modified theories of gravity: Lessons and challenges
2019
The understanding of stellar structure represents the crossroads of our theories of the nuclear force and the gravitational interaction under the most extreme conditions observably accessible. It provides a powerful probe of the strong field regime of General Relativity, and opens fruitful avenues for the exploration of new gravitational physics. The latter can be captured via modified theories of gravity, which modify the Einstein-Hilbert action of General Relativity and/or some of its principles. These theories typically change the stellar structure equations, thus having a large impact on the astrophysical properties of the corresponding stars and opening a new window to constrain these …
Temperature dependence of sodium and ionized calcium resonance lines perturbed by helium
2014
International audience; Traces of heavy metals in cool DZ white dwarf stars may be attributed to the accretion of circumstellar dust thought to originate from tidal disruption of rocky parent bodies. Spectra of such stars therefore provide a unique opportunity to study the composition of extrasolar planetary systems. The determination of metal abundances from stellar spectra depends on stellar atmospheric parameters and an accurate prior knowledge of the collision broadening of the line profiles by the most common constituents of the stellar atmosphere. For this purpose, we present theoretical absorption spectra of Na and Ca+ broadened by He for the conditions prevailing in cool white dwarf…
