Exploring students’ identity development from the perspective of study difficulties

This work-in-progress paper in research category reports preliminary findings on how students taking introductory computing courses develop identity from the perspective of study difficulties. The motivation was that students identified lack of meaning and prospects (cf. identity) as a study difficulty in a previous qualitative study. The present study further explores this finding by issuing both an identity development and a self-efficacy scale to a larger first-year student cohort. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan suomalaisten korkeakouluopiskelijoiden opiskelutilanteissa kokeman sosiaalisen jännittämisen yleisyyttä ja yhteyksiä opiskelijan opiskelukykyyn sekä fyysisen, psyykkisen ja sosiaalisen hyvinvoinnin osatekijöihin. Tutkimuksen fokus on ongelmalliseksi koetussa jännittämisessä. Tutkimuksen aineistona on hyödynnetty kahta laajaa aiemmin kerättyä tutkimusaineistoa: Korkeakouluopiskelijoiden terveystutkimus 2008 aineistoa (Kunttu & Huttunen 2009) ja Almonkarin väitöskirja-aineistoa (Almonkari 2007). Great expectations: Learning the boundaries of design rights

We present a case study of an increase in design right filings and concurrent design right litigations in an industry that previously had little experience of design right protection. The motives for and outcomes of filing, and how these changed over time are discussed. We go on to explore the events, which offered the decision makers opportunities to update their beliefs about the scope of design right protection. We find that filing motives changed from specific protection goals to freedom to operate over time. We also find that the actors faced several, but sometimes contradictory, learning opportunities. Even harmonic pulse train generation by cross-polarization-modulation seeded instability in optical fibers

International audience; We show that, by properly adjusting the relative state of polarization of the pump and of a weak modulation, with a frequency such that at least one of its even harmonics falls within the band of modulation instability, one obtains a fully modulated wave at the second or higher even harmonic of the initial modulation. An application of this principle to the generation of a 80-GHz optical pulse train with high extinction ratio from a 40-GHz weakly modulated pump is experimentally demonstrated using a nonzero dispersion shifted fiber in the telecom C band.

Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin työhön liittyvien psykososiaalisten palkkioiden (arvostus, etenemismahdollisuudet ja työn varmuus) ja optimistisuuden yhteyksiä suomalaisten toimihenkilöiden henkilökohtaisiin työtavoitteisiin. Kyselytutkimukseen osallistui 303 tutkittavaa vuonna 2012 ja he olivat iältään 30– 42 -vuotiaita (ka = 37 vuotta). Tutkittavista 85 prosenttia oli miehiä.
