Disentangling Derivatives, Uncertainty and Error in Gaussian Process Models

Gaussian Processes (GPs) are a class of kernel methods that have shown to be very useful in geoscience applications. They are widely used because they are simple, flexible and provide very accurate estimates for nonlinear problems, especially in parameter retrieval. An addition to a predictive mean function, GPs come equipped with a useful property: the predictive variance function which provides confidence intervals for the predictions. The GP formulation usually assumes that there is no input noise in the training and testing points, only in the observations. A Taxonomy as a Vehicle for Learning

In this article, we describe the development of a classification system providing a framework for analysis of, and communication about, a subgroup of learning objects. The objects we consider are highly visual, animated, interactive, and mathematics-related, and we call them VaniMaps. Secondly, we discuss the use of the system. In the first phase, the development was based on literature studies and discussions on examples of VaniMaps. In the second phase, the classification system was tested by students and their responses were analyzed to identify possible improvements. Muon Anomaly from Lepton Vacuum Polarization and The Mellin--Barnes Representation

We evaluate, analytically, a specific class of eighth--order and tenth--order QED contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. They are generated by Feynman diagrams involving lowest order vacuum polarization insertions of leptons $l=e,\mu$, and $\tau$. The results are given in the form of analytic expansions in terms of the mass ratios $m_e/m_\mu$ and $m_\mu/m_\tau$. We compute as many terms as required by the error induced by the present experimental uncertainty on the lepton masses. Sport provides many youth participants with a central life project, and yet very few eventually fulfill their athletic dreams, which may lead them to disengage from sport entirely. Many studies have explored the processes of athletic retirement, but little is known about how youth athletes actually reconstruct their relationship with sport and embodiment postretirement. Associations between changes in physical fitness and psychological difficulties status among Norwegian adolescents

Abstract Objectives To investigate the associations for one-year changes in cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and body mass index, with psychological difficulties status in adolescents. Methods Norwegian 14-15-year-olds (n = 925) participated in data collection at two time points separated by one year. Psychological difficulties were assessed via the Strengths and Difficulties questionnaire and data from follow-up serve as the dependent variable.
