Porous organic cage compounds as highly potent affinity materials for sensing by quartz crystal microbalances.

2012

Porosity makes powerful affinity materials for quartz crystal microbalances. The shape-persistent organic cages and pores create superior affinity systems to existing ones for direct tracing of aromatic solvent vapors. A shape and size selectivity for the analytes is observed. These organic cages can be processed to thin films with highly reproducible sensing properties.

Methyl cellulose-based edible films and coatings I. Effect of plasticizer content on water and 1-octen-3-ol sorption and transport

1995

Edible films were prepared from methyl cellulose with various concentrations of poly(ethylene glycol) 400 (PEG400) used as a plasticizer. Water vapour and 1-octen-3-ol (an aroma compound) were selected as hydrophilic and hydrophobic volatile penetrants respectively. Their solubility and permeability through methyl cellulose-based edible films were studied using gas chromatography methods. Whatever penetrant was used, the flux increased with the PEG400 content. Transfer behaviour, i.e., the order of increased magnitude of the transfer rate, strongly depends on the nature of the volatile compound. However, water sorption only depends on the PEG400 content whereas the aroma compound sorption i…

Valorisation of urban green areas for producing renewable energy and biochar as growing substrate of Sicilian aromatic and nutraceutical species in a…

2020

This work is aimed at evaluating the possible building up of a gasifier for the energy valorisation of residual biomass deriving from urban areas and their surroundings. The area and the volumes of supply and economic convenience have been determined by implementing a GIS-based geographic method to the localisation and quantification of non-uniform elements of plant biomass. The pyrolysis and gasification processes of the lignocellulosic biomass obtained from pruning and maintenance operations of the urban and ornamental green include the production of a residual amount of biochar. The biochar can be used in agriculture as a soil improver and a substrate alternative to peat in the sustainab…

Structure of anisole derivatives by total neutron and X-ray scattering: Evidences of weak C–H⋯O and C–H⋯π interactions in the liquid state

2020

Abstract High resolution, total neutron and X-ray scattering data have been used in synergy with Molecular Dynamics simulations to access atomistic scale insight into the structure of anisole and 2,3,5-trimethylanisole, two aromatic compounds bearing an electron-donating methoxy group. A detailed description is provided for the main interactions occurring in these systems, including π-π stacking and weak hydrogen bonding correlations: C H⋯O and C H⋯π. The existence of preferential orientations of the first shell coordinating molecules and the specific nature of the interactions involving the π cloud and the polar methoxy group have been reported and discussed.

An Expanded 2D Fused Aromatic Network with 90-Ring Hexagons

2022

[EN]Two-dimensional fused aromatic networks (2D FANs) have emerged as a highly versatile alternative to holey graphene. The synthesis of 2D FANs with increasingly larger lattice dimensions will enable new application perspectives. However, the synthesis of larger analogues is mostly limited by lack of appropriate monomers and methods. Herein, we describe the synthesis, characterisation and properties of an expanded 2D FAN with 90-ring hexagons, which exceed the largest 2D FAN lattices reported to date. This work was carried out with support from the Basque Science Foundation for Science (Ikerbasque),POLYMAT, the University of the Basque Country,Gobierno Vasco (BERC programme) and Gobierno d…

O-Doped Nanographenes: A Pyrano/Pyrylium Route Towards Semiconducting Cationic Mixed-Valence Complexes

2020

Herein we report an efficient synthesis to prepare O‐doped nanographenes, which derive from the longitudinally and latitudinally p‐extension of pyrene. The derivatives are highly fluorescent and feature low‐oxidation potentials. Exploiting electrooxidation, crystals of cationic mixed valence (MV) complexes were grown in which the organic salts organize into face‐to‐face p‐ p stacks, a favorable solid‐state arrangement for organic electronics. Variable‐temperature EPR measurements and relaxation studies suggest a strong electron delocalization along the longitudinal axis of the columnar p‐stacking architectures. Electric measurements of single crystals of the MV salts exhibited a semiconduct…

2,9-Dimethylpicene: Synthesis, Mutagenic Activity, and Identification in Natural Samples

1990

Abstract 2,9-Dimethylpicene (2,9-DMPic) has been conveniently synthesized via a new route involving oxidative photocyclization of suitable substituted diarylethylenes and has been characterized by high-resolution 400-MHz 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, 2,9-DMPic exhibits a typical line narrowed emission spectrum in n-decane matrix frozen at 15 K (Shpol'skii effect). Its unambiguous identification in a natural sample has been performed by this technique, providing strong evidence for the formation of this compound through aromatization of triterpenoid natural precursors. The mutagenicity of this naturally occurring methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) has been examined in six h…

Effects of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons on Lung Function in Children with Asthma: A Mediation Analysis.

2022

Studies investigating the association between urinary Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and asthma in children provided inhomogeneous results. We aimed to use Mediation Analysis to discover whether a link between urinary PAHs and lung function exists and if it might be ascribed to a direct or a symptom-mediated (indirect) effect in children with asthma. This single-center prospective study was conducted in Palermo, Italy, between March and July 2017 and involved 50 children with persistent mild-moderate asthma, aged 6–11 years. At each time visit (day 0, 30, 60, and 90), physical examination, spirometry, and urine collection for detection of urinary cotinine and PAHs were performed. A…

Sustainability and multifunctionality in Mediterranean cropping systems: the role of medicinal and aromatic plants

2010

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, shortly termed MAPs, are a huge category of plant species, which have in common their aptitude to supply substances, respectively medicines and flavours, that are or may be used by people for a large number of uses, having a various level of complexity: from plants which are used by man “as they are” or after a minimum transformation, addressed to human food (the spices), or herbal self-therapy (the traditional medicinal plants), it is possible to drop to species employed by highly sophisticated industrial sectors such as perfume or cosmetic industries, passing through almost all intermediate ways and complexities. Many of these plants find the best growing co…

Cultivation of Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) with different row arrangements

2010

Dill (Anethum graveolens L.) is an annual plant from Umbelliferae. Although in cookery also sprouts and tender leaves are used, the drug from Dill is represented by the scented fruits (“seeds”), largely used for flavouring conserved foods and liqueurs, but also by herbal and cosmetic industry. In this work, we present the results of a trial performed in Sicily, putting under comparison four row arrangements: CR30 (continuous rows 30 cm apart); CR60 (continuous rows 60 cm apart), CR90 (continuous rows 90 cm apart) and TR (twin rows with a distance of 30 cm inside and 60 cm between twin rows). Being constant the plant population on row (12 plants m-1), the plant density per unit area changed …
