It is possible to predict the potential range of a species on the basis of its ecological characteristics and those of the invaded ecosystem. The existence of genetic variation indicates a species' potential to respond to new environmental conditions, thus facilitating its success as an invader. Accordingly, evolutionary and ecological approaches are needed to identify the factors explaining both species' range and their potential to invade new areas. A search for new faint carbon (C) stars in the Polar region δ > 55o has been accomplished by obtaining objective prism spectra in the near infrared 550 -- 900 nm on images of CCD camera of Baldone Schmidt telescope of Astrophysical observatory. The positions of stars having color indices (J – K) > 1.3 mag in Two Micron All Sky Infrared Survey (2MASS) were selected to pick out suspicious carbon stars.Our survey is limited in brightness by J < 10 mag. 24 new carbon stars were found and their characteristics obtained. Systematic Study of Several Causes and Effects Due to Absorbent Blanks in Determinations of One Analyte

A systematic study is performed about several factors involved in the measurements when a absorbent blank is used, as molar absorption coefficient of the formed complex, absorbance of the blank at the measured wavelength, and kind of spectrophotometer used (conventional double-beam or diode-array). It is proved that the usual methodology, measuring against reagent blank, produces less accurate measurements than those obtained against solvent blank. Detection of deuterated molecules, but not of lithium hydride, in the z = 0.89 absorber toward PKS 1830−211

Deuterium and lithium are light elements of high cosmological and astrophysical importance. In this work we report the first detection of deuterated molecules and a search for lithium hydride, 7LiH, at redshift z=0.89 in the spiral galaxy intercepting the line of sight to the quasar PKS1830-211. We used ALMA to observe several submillimeter lines of ND, NH2D, and HDO, and their related isotopomers NH2, NH3, and H2^18O, in absorption against the southwest image of the quasar, allowing us to derive XD/XH abundance ratios. From Graz to Göttingen: Neugebauer’s Early Intellectual Journey

Otto Neugebauer’s early academic career was marked by a series of transitions. His interests shifted from physics to mathematics, and finally to the history of ancient mathematics and exact sciences. Yet even from his early years in Graz, Neugebauer was strongly attracted to the mathematical culture of Gottingen. When he arrived there in 1922, he quickly established a strong personal friendship with Richard Courant, the newly appointed Director of the Mathematics Institute. Neugebauer and Courant worked together closely up until 1933, when the Nazi government decimated the Gottingen scientific community.
