Atypical presentation of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis: two case reports
2017
Abstract Background Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by severe neurological and psychiatric symptoms and a difficult diagnosis. The disease is often secondary to a neoplastic lesion, seldom diagnosed years later. Psychiatric symptoms are prevalent in adults; neurologic symptoms are more evident in children, who typically present primarily with neurological symptoms. To the best of our knowledge, the association with juvenile idiopathic arthritis has not been described. Case presentation We report the cases of two caucasian girls with an atypical presentation. The first patient was an 8-year-old girl with normal psychomotor developmen…
Systemic lupus erythematosus and bullous pemphigoid with dramatic response to dapsone
2017
Patient: Female, 11 Final Diagnosis: Bullous pemphigoid in systemic lupus erythematosus Symptoms: Bullous lupus • photosensitive rash • synovitis Medication:— Clinical Procedure: Pharmacological treatment Specialty: Rheumatology Objective: Unusual clinical course Background: Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune blistering disease, with relapses, isolated or associated with other autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Joint manifestations rapidly respond to small or moderate doses of corticosteroids, whereas skin manifestations usually respond to antimalarial drugs. Case Report: We describe the clinical case of an 11-year-old girl with SLE. She showed bullous skin les…

Rheumatoid arthritis associated with the occurrence, severity and extension of periodontitis : a case-control study
2021
Background Emerging evidence pointed to a potential association between periodontitis (PE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), based on shared characteristics and similarities in risk factors, immunogenetics and pathways of tissue destruction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential association between RA and PE, as well as the influence of risk variables in this association. Material and Methods The present case-control study comprised 471 individuals (157 cases with RA and 314 controls) that underwent a full-mouth periodontal examination. The association between risk variables and the occurrence of AR and PE were evaluated through univariate and multivariate logistic analysis. Resu…
Assessment of Periodontal status in Patients with Psoriatic Arthritis : a retrospective, case-control study
2021
Background Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and periodontitis both represent chronic inflammatory disorders that share similar pathophysiological processes. However, very few studies have been done to address the link between the two diseases which remains poorly understood. The present study aimed to assess and compare the periodontal status in patients suffering from PsA and systemically healthy subjects to identify whether a possible association exists between PsA and periodontitis. Material and Methods Periodontal parameters – PI, BOP, mGI, PPD and CAL were recorded in 110 patients with PsA and 110 age- and gender-matched systemically healthy patients. Mean values of the periodontal parameters…
Association between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis in an adult population – A cross sectional study
2021
Background This investigation was aimed to analyse the existence of an association between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis among Indian subjects. Material and Methods This observational study included a total of 110 individuals between 18-78 years of age, which were divided equally into RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and NRA (Non-Rheumatoid Arthritis) groups. General, Oral and a complete Periodontal examination included recording of Gingival Index (GI), Plaque index (PI), Pocket Probing Depth (PPD), Clinical attachment level (CAL) in a questionnaire form. Laboratory and rheumatologcal parameters like C-reactive protein (CRP), Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and Disease Activity Score…
Role of peroxiredoxin 6 in the chondroprotective effects of microvesicles from human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells
2021
Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la página web de la revista en la siguiente URL: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214031X21000656?via%3Dihub Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease characterized by cartilage degradation, low-grade synovitis and subchondral bone alterations. In the damaged joint, there is a progressive increase of oxidative stress leading to disruption of chondrocyte homeostasis. The modulation of oxidative stress could control the expression of inflammatory and catabolic mediators involved in OA. We have previously demonstrated that extracellular vesicles (EVs) present in the secretome of human mesenchymal stem cells from adipose tissu…
Hsp60 and Hsp10 as antitumour molecular agents
2007
The molecular chaperones Hsp60 and Hsp10 are, according to recent reports, involved in cancer development and progression. We, for instance, have found that their expression varies with distinctive patterns in different malignancies: they are overexpressed in colorectal, exocervical and prostate carcinogenesis, and colorectal cancer progression, but they are downregulated during bronchial carcinogenesis. There is also evidence showing that Hsp60 and Hsp10 can be used as therapeutic agents, for example in rheumatoid arthritis. In view of these findings we want now to call attention to the potential of Hsp60 and Hsp10 in cancer therapy.
Aceclofenac versus piroxicam in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee: A double-blind controlled study
1994
Abstract The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of aceclofenac tablets 100 mg twice daily with piroxicam tablets 20 mg once daily in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee or gonarthritis. A randomized, double-blind, controlled study of 3 months' duration was conducted in patients with gonarthritis diagnosed according to the World Health Organization criteria. A total of 212 patients were recruited; 205 patients fully complied with the inclusion-exclusion criteria. Of these, 103 received aceclofenac and 102 received piroxicam. Fourteen patients in the aceclofenac group and 12 patients in the piroxicam group who failed to complete the 3-month treatment …
Detecting Ankle Instability With an Instrumented Ankle Arthrometer: An Experimental Study.
2019
A new instrumented device was developed to quantify ankle joint stability during an anterior talar drawer test. The aim of the present study was to validate this device comparing bone kinematics with arthrometer measurement outcomes. An anterior talar drawer test was performed with 14 cadaver legs using a custom instrumented ankle arthrometer. Using clusters of bone-pin markers, the relative three-dimensional movement of calcaneus, talus, and fibula was simultaneously measured. Anterior drawer test was applied on the intact foot and after sequentially sectioning the anterior talofibular ligament, the calcaneofibular ligament, and the posterior talofibular ligament. Cutting the anterior talo…
