The German Orthopedic Society from 1918 to 1932. Developments and trends

2001

The German Orthopedic Society was founded in 1901. The period between 1918 and 1932 was characterized by the aftermath of World War I. Up to the middle of the 2nd decade, orthopedic surgeons mainly treated soldiers and civilians affected by the war. Almost every congress dealt with amputations and artificial limbs. At the same time, orthopedic surgery became a specialty at the German universities, legitimizing it as a subject of its own. Besides the large number of victims of the First World War who had to be treated by orthopedic surgeons, there was a second group of patients, the so-called cripples. These handicapped people had not previously been treated in general. A new law established…

The Symmetry and Predictive Factors in Two-Stage Bilateral Hip Replacement Procedures

2021

Background: Approximately 10–25% of total hip replacement patients undergo a bilateral procedure. The purpose of this study was to compare selected parameters associated with the first and second hip arthroplasty in patients undergoing two-stage treatment due to bilateral hip osteoarthritis and establish the predictive factors for the second procedure. Methods: This study compared the data on bilateral total hip replacement surgeries conducted in the period between 2017 and 2021 (42 patients). The following parameters from the first and second procedure were compared: the prosthetic stem, head, and insert cup size

Verlaufsbeobachtung des Kollagen- und Knochenstoffwechsels bei Patienten mit zementfreier Hüfttotalendoprothese*

2008

Introduction This study investigated the influence of concentration and activity of several markers of the collagen and bone metabolism and their impact on ingrowth of non-cemented total hip arthroplasty. Methods 40 patients underwent an implantation of a ABG-prosthesis. Before surgery and 1, 2, 12 and 24 weeks after it serum concentrations of PICP, ICTP, IGF-1, ON, b-AP, Calcium, Phosphate, GPT and Creatinin were measured and a collagen ratio (CQ) was calculated. Results PICP decreased until 1st week, increased at 2nd week and decreased again after that time. ICTP increased significantly in 1st week, reached a maximum in 2nd week and decreased after that. b-AP decreased in 1st week but inc…

Nervenläsionen bei der Hüft-TEP-Implantation - Strategien zur Lähmungsprophylaxe

2003

Aim Nerve lesions are a serious complication of total hip arthroplasty. The incidence of lesions of large nerves exceeds those of luxation and septic loosening. An analysis of damage causes should lead to prophylactic strategies and improvement of operative technique. Patients are more aware of this complication and malpractice cases are increasing. Between 1977 and 2001 the medical association of North Rhine dealt with 126 cases of nerve lesions. Method All potential intraoperative causes for nerve damage are investigated. Results Incorrectly placed Hohmann retractors offer the largest damage potential. Electro surgery and self-cutting screws have a hazardous potential. Sharp injuries, ret…

Failed Total Hip Arthroplasty: Diagnostic Performance of Conventional MRI Features and Locoregional Lymphadenopathy to Identify Infected Implants.

2020

Background Very little has been published about the diagnostic performance of MRI in total hip arthroplasty (THA) infection. Purpose To determine the diagnostic performance of conventional MRI features and of new lymph nodal indices to identify infection in patients with failed THA. Study type Retrospective. Population In all, 119 patients (66 females; age 66.9 ± 12.4 years) with failed THA. Field strength/sequences Metal artifact reduction sequence (MARS) protocol including short tau inversion recovery and turbo spin-echo T1 - and T2 -weighted sequences at 1.5T. Assessment Patients underwent pelvis MRI prior to failed THA revision. MRIs were reviewed to identify periprosthetic bone destruc…

Costochondral Grafts in the treatment of Temporomandibular joint ankylosis: a Clinical Study

2011

Background: Treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis usually requires adequate excision of the involved ankylotic block (arthroplasty) without interposing any material (gap arthroplasty) or interpositional arthroplasty using autogenous or alloplastic materials. The objective of this paper was to note the potential of the costochondral graft (CCGs) as an interpositional material and to see whether they induce normal growth potential in the reconstructed mandible. Materials and method: The ankylosed temporomandibular joint was reached by a preauricular incision with or without angulation and exposed. In the first 4 cases, arthroplasty was done using a bur. The bony mass was detach…

Robotic total knee arthroplastyThe accuracy of CT-based component placement

2004

Accurate alignment of the components in total knee arthroplasty is important. By use of postoperative CT controls, we studied the ability of a robotic effector to accurately place and align total knee arthroplasty (TKA) components according to a purely CT-based preoperative plan.Robotic TKA was performed in 13 patients (6 men) with primary gonarthrosis. Locator screws were placed into femur and tibia under spinal anesthesia. A CT-scan including the femoral head, knee and ankle was performed. In the preoperative planning software, virtual components were positioned into the CT volume. In a second operation, the robot milled femur and tibia with a high-speed milling tool according to the preo…

Mycobacterium tuberculosis prosthetic joint infections a case series and literature review

2018

International audience; Objectives - We aimed to characterize diagnosis, management, and outcome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis prosthetic joint infections (PJI).Methods - Cases of M. tuberculosis PJI documented in 7 referral French centers were retrospectively reviewed. Data were collected from medical files on a standardized questionnaire. We performed a literature review using the keywords 'prosthetic joint', and 'tuberculosis'. Results - During years 1997-2016, 13 patients (8 males, 5 females, median age 79 years [range, 60-86]) had documented M. tuberculosis PJI, involving hip (n = 6), knee (n = 6), or shoulder (n = 1). Median time from arthroplasty to diagnosis was 9 years [0.4-20]. Th…
