Exploring the Solar Wind from Its Source on the Corona into the Inner Heliosphere during the First Solar Orbiter-Parker Solar Probe Quadrature

2021

This Letter addresses the first Solar Orbiter (SO) -- Parker Solar Probe (PSP) quadrature, occurring on January 18, 2021, to investigate the evolution of solar wind from the extended corona to the inner heliosphere. Assuming ballistic propagation, the same plasma volume observed remotely in corona at altitudes between 3.5 and 6.3 solar radii above the solar limb with the Metis coronagraph on SO can be tracked to PSP, orbiting at 0.1 au, thus allowing the local properties of the solar wind to be linked to the coronal source region from where it originated. Thanks to the close approach of PSP to the Sun and the simultaneous Metis observation of the solar corona, the flow-aligned magnetic fiel…

The Large Area Detector of LOFT: the Large Observatory for X-ray Timing

2014

LOFT (Large Observatory for X-ray Timing) is one of the five candidates that were considered by ESA as an M3 mission (with launch in 2022-2024) and has been studied during an extensive assessment phase. It is specifically designed to perform fast X-ray timing and probe the status of the matter near black holes and neutron stars. Its pointed instrument is the Large Area Detector (LAD), a 10 m 2 -class instrument operating in the 2-30keV range, which holds the capability to revolutionise studies of variability from X-ray sources on the millisecond time scales. The LAD instrument has now completed the assessment phase but was not down-selected for launch. However, during the assessment, most o…

LOFT: the Large Observatory For X-ray Timing

2012

The LOFT mission concept is one of four candidates selected by ESA for the M3 launch opportunity as Medium Size missions of the Cosmic Vision programme. The launch window is currently planned for between 2022 and 2024. LOFT is designed to exploit the diagnostics of rapid X-ray flux and spectral variability that directly probe the motion of matter down to distances very close to black holes and neutron stars, as well as the physical state of ultra-dense matter. These primary science goals will be addressed by a payload composed of a Large Area Detector (LAD) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD is a collimated (<1 degree field of view) experiment operating in the energy range 2-50 keV,…

A sum rule approach to total muon capture rates

1986

Abstract The total muon capture rate is expanded in terms of sum rules and the convergence of such an expansion is analyzed. It results that the energy-weighted and the inverse-energy-weighted sum rules provide an accurate estimate for the total rate in agreement with a complete RPA calculation through the response function. The static polarizability of the isovector dipole mode turns out to be the relevant quantity to determine the total muon capture rate, in light and medium nuclei.

Recent progress in understanding physical and chemical properties of African and Asian mineral dust

2011

International audience; This paper presents a review of recently acquired knowledge on the physico-chemical properties of mineral dust from Africa and Asia based on data presented and discussed during the Third International Dust Workshop, held in Leipzig (Germany) in September 2008. Various regional field experiments have been conducted in the last few years, mostly close to source regions or after short-range transport. Although significant progress has been made in characterising the regional variability of dust properties close to source regions, in particular the mineralogy of iron and the description of particle shape and mixing state, difficulties remain in estimating the range of va…

Étude des propriétés optiques et spectroscopiques de nanorods dopés au lanthanide pour des applications de nanosondes en champ proche

2022

Lanthanide-doped nanoparticles constitute a versatile family of photoluminescent local nanoprobes. In this work, we study the photoluminescence of Eu3+-doped NaYF4 nanorods characterized by highly polarized spectra. We develop a full theoretical model and paraxial approximation for nanorod dipole emission. We measure the photoluminescence of individual nanorods by fluorescence confocal microscopy and determine some of their intrinsic optical properties. We also determine the nature (electric or magnetic) and orientations of dipoles moments of the optical transitions used for nanoprobing in the visible range. In addition to the full theoretical model and the paraxial approximation, Fourier mi…

Coupled experiment/simulation approach for the design of radiation-hardened rare-earth doped optical fibers and amplifiers

2011

We developed an approach to design radiation-hardened rare earth -doped fibers and amplifiers. This methodology combines testing experiments on these devices with particle swarm optimization (PSO) calculations. The composition of Er/Yb-doped phosphosilicate fibers was improved by introducing Cerium inside their cores. Such composition strongly reduces the amplifier radiation sensitivity, limiting its degradation: we observed a gain decreasing from 19 dB to 18 dB after 50 krad whereas previous studies reported higher degradations up to 0°dB at such doses. PSO calculations, taking only into account the radiation effects on the absorption efficiency around the pump and emission wavelengths, co…

Swarming of micron-sized hematite cubes in a rotating magnetic field -- Experiments

2020

Energy input by under-field rotation of particles drives the systems to emergent non-equilibrium states. Here we investigate the suspension of rotating magnetic cubes. Micron-sized hematite cubes are synthesized and observed microscopically. When exposed to a rotating magnetic field, they form rotating swarms that interact with each other like liquid droplets. We describe the swarming behaviour and its limits and characterize swarm size and angular velocity dependence on magnetic field strength and frequency. A quantitative agreement with a theoretical model is found for the angular velocity of swarms as a function of field frequency. It is interesting to note that hematite particles with p…

Combined Temperature Radiation Effects and Influence of Drawing Conditions on Phosphorous‐Doped Optical Fibers

2018

International audience; This work focuses on the effects of high dose ionizing radiation, up to 10 MGy(SiO2), on P‐doped multimode optical fibers (OF) at different irradiation temperatures. The investigation is based on two complementary experimental techniques: radiation‐induced attenuation (RIA) measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The latter technique allows measuring the P1, P2, metastable‐POHC and stable‐POHC defects. Three OF samples are drawn from the same preform to evaluate the influence of changing their drawing conditions of the OFs on the radiation responses. This first study is performed under X‐rays at room temperature. The results are compared with the ones…
