Evolutionary site-number changes of ribosomal DNA loci during speciation: complex scenarios of ancestral and more recent polyploid events.
2015
Genes encoding ribosomal RNA are universal key constituents of eukaryotic genomes, but the number of loci varies between species. We assessed the evolutionary trends in site-number changes of rDNA loci during speciation in a lineage of the cabbage family, characterized by complex scenarios of polyploidy. Our results suggest the existence of constrictions to burst loci amplification in the 5S rDNA family in polyploids and an overall trend to further reduce their number. The 45S rDNA site change in polyploids tells a different story, implying loci amplification in most of the polyploid entities.
From the Classical Boltzmann Equation to the Generalized Kinetic models of Biological Systems
2017
This paper deal with the classical Boltzmann Equation generalized to model populations in complex biological system. In particular, the populations refer to the cells of the immune system and to those of an aggressive host (cancer cells) in a human being. We will focus with the study of a spatially homogeneous continuous model, and derivation of the macroscopic model. The paper starts from a simple description of the classical Boltzmann equation and goes to the mathematical approach proposed to model the large systems of interacting entities focusing the competition between immune system and cancer cells.
Upper limits on the isotropic gravitational-wave background from Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo's third observing run
2021
We report results of a search for an isotropic gravitational-wave background (GWB) using data from Advanced LIGO's and Advanced Virgo's third observing run (O3) combined with upper limits from the earlier O1 and O2 runs. Unlike in previous observing runs in the advanced detector era, we include Virgo in the search for the GWB. The results are consistent with uncorrelated noise, and therefore we place upper limits on the strength of the GWB. We find that the dimensionless energy density $\Omega_{\rm GW}\leq 5.8\times 10^{-9}$ at the 95% credible level for a flat (frequency-independent) GWB, using a prior which is uniform in the log of the strength of the GWB, with 99% of the sensitivity comi…
(2010). Microstructure and magnetic properties of colloidal cobalt nano-clusters.
2010
The magnetic response of nanometer sized Co nanoparticles (NP) prepared using reverse micelle solutions are presented. The use of complementary structural and morphological probes (like transmission electron microscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy) allowed to relate the magnetic properties to the size, morphology, composition and atomic structure of the nanoparticles. All data agree on the presence of a core–shell structure of NPs made of a metallic Co core surrounded by a thin Co-oxide layer. The core–shell microstructure of NPs affects its magnetic response mainly raising the anisotropy constant.
Hating Adolescents Test (HAT): a preliminary development of a measure to assess hating among adolescents
2020
The phenomenon of haters is becoming common among adolescents. The aims of the present research were to evaluate the preliminary psychometric properties of the Hating Adolescents Test (HAT), an ad hoc questionnaire created to evaluate online and offline hate (Study 1), and possible risk factors connected with hate (Study 2). Participants (202 female and 200 male) of this study completed the HAT, the How I Think Questionnaire, the Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire, and the Penn State Worry Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were applied. Preliminary data suggest how males reported higher level of hate than…
Functional CdSe and CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles capped with thiols: photophysical and photochemical properties and applications as sensors
2013
The European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing Synergies: Protocol for a prospective observational study to measure the Impact of a…
2016
Aim of this paper is to describe the protocol of the study "Impact of a Community-based Program on Prevention and Mitigation of Frailty in community-dwelling older adults" developed in the framework of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. This proposal has been developed by the Partnership Action groups on frailty, fall prevention and polypharmacy in older. The proposal wants to assess the impact of community-based programs aimed to counteract three main outcomes related to frailty: hospitalization, institutionalization and death. Bringing together researchers from seven European countries, the proposal aims to achieve the critical mass and the geographical exte…
Off-diagonal estimates for bi-parameter commutators
2022
Tutkimme kahden parametrin singulaari-integraalien kommutaattoreiden rajoit-tuneisuutta iteroitujen avaruuksien[b, T]:Lp1Lp2→Lq1Lq2välillä kunqi, pi∈(1,∞)ja erityisesti fraktionaalisessa tilanteessaqi6=pi. Yhteensä seitsemässä ta-pauksessa yhdeksästä saavutamme täyden karaterisoinnin rajoittuneisuudella symboliabkoskevillaoskillatorisilla testiehdoilla. We study the boundedness of commutators of bi-parameter singular integrals between mixed spaces [b,T]:Lp1Lp2→Lq1Lq2 in the off-diagonal situation qi,pi∈(1,∞) where we allow qi≠pi. Boundedness is fully characterized in terms of oscillatory testing conditions on the function b for a total seven out of the nine possible arrangements of the inte…
Comparing deep‐end confinement in England & Wales and Norway
2022
Extreme forms of custody represent the boundary points of state power. The configuration of the most restrictive corners of prison systems, and what goes on within them, is highly instructive in exposing the objectives, limits, and implications of state coercion at its most severe. Based on data collected in England & Wales and Norway, this article has two main aims. The first is to explore the degree to which “deep-end” confinement differs between jurisdictions with different penal philosophies. The second is to understand how the most extreme form of confinement in each jurisdiction differs from the more typical carceral experiences within each system and its overall penal ethos. Empirica…
Fabry Disease With Concomitant Lewy Body Disease
2019
AbstractAlthough Gaucher disease can be accompanied by Lewy pathology (LP) and extrapyramidal symptoms, it is unknown if LP exists in Fabry disease (FD), another progressive multisystem lysosomal storage disorder. We aimed to elucidate the distribution patterns of FD-related inclusions and LP in the brain of a 58-year-old cognitively unimpaired male FD patient suffering from predominant hypokinesia. Immunohistochemistry (CD77, α-synuclein, collagen IV) and neuropathological staging were performed on 100-µm sections. Tissue from the enteric or peripheral nervous system was unavailable. As controls, a second cognitively unimpaired 50-year-old male FD patient without LP or motor symptoms and 3…
