The ARX (Aristaless-related (X-linked) homeobox) gene is not only present in arthropods and their ancestors, but also in vertebrates including humans (ARX orthologs). The gene is composed of 5 coding exons and it is expressed predominantly in foetal and adult brain and skeletal muscle. In this review we report on our experience and review the existing literature on the genotype and phenotype heterogeneity associated with ARX abnormalities in humans ranging from severe neuronal migration defects (e.g., lissencephaly), to mild forms of X-linked mental retardation without apparent brain abnormalities. The Classical Notion of Competition Revisited

This article seeks to fill a lacuna within classical economics concerning the process of market price determination in situations of market disequilibrium. To this aim, first we distinguish the classical notion of free competition from the Walrasian notion of perfect competition and we argue that the latter is beset with some theoretical difficulties alien to the former. This article supports claims that critical realism philosophy of science, as refounded in the hands of Roy Bhaskar, offers valuable knowledge enhancing insight into the advancement of Marx’s research program. However, it maintains that key principles set out by Bhaskar have not been adequately assimilated by those working with critical realism in the field of Marxist studies. Testing the long-run relationship between health expenditures and GDP in the presence of structural change: the case of Spain

This article examines the long-run relationship between per capita US$ PPP health expenditures (HE) and per capita US$ PPP national income (GDP), using Spanish data over the period 1960 to 2001. We extend previous analyses by addressing the question of whether this relationship is stable over time, allowing for structural changes at an unknown date. Our empirical results are consistent with the existence of a long-run relationship between both variables, with two structural changes in 1971 and 1991. On the other hand, health would have been characterized as a luxury commodity, even though increasingly less over time.

La construcción de un conocimiento crítico compartido educativo requiere que se cumplan algunas condiciones. En primer lugar que exista un grupo de personas y colectivos que estén dispuestos a colaborar en debates y argumentos en relación con su profesión docente. También es preciso que la teoría crítica esté definida en relación con las tradiciones e innovaciones didácticas. Pero sobre todo es preciso que se establezca un diálogo entre la teoría y la práctica, en especial en las acciones e intenciones que se desarrollan en el sistema escolar. Este es la finalidad que busca el Geoforo desde hace cinco años.
