Geochemistry of Noble Gases and CO2 in Fluid Inclusions From Lithospheric Mantle Beneath Wilcza Góra (Lower Silesia, Southwest Poland)
2018
Knowledge of the products originating from the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) is crucial for constraining the geochemical features and evolution of the mantle. This study investigated the chemistry and isotope composition (noble gases and CO2 ) of fluid inclusions (FI) from selected mantle xenoliths originating from Wilcza Góra (Lower Silesia, southwest Poland), with the aim of integrating their petrography and mineral chemistry. Mantle xenoliths are mostly harzburgites and sometimes bear amphiboles, and are brought to the surface by intraplate alkaline basalts that erupted outside the north-easternmost part of the Eger (Ohře) Rift in Lower Silesia. Olivine (Ol) is classified int…
Recreational noise pollution of traditional festivals reduces the juvenile productivity of an avian urban bioindicator.
2021
Noise is a pollutant of emergent concern for ecologists and conservation biologists. Recreational noise pollution, especially unpredictable and intermittent sounds, and its effects on wildlife and biodiversity have been poorly studied. Researchers have paid very little attention to the effect of noisy traditional festivals (fireworks and powder-guns). This study aimed to explore the effect of these recreational activities on the juvenile productivity of an urban avian bioindicator: the house sparrow. We studied five pairs of localities in the Valencia Region (E Spain) with noisy traditional festivals. Each pair was composed of one locality with festivals during the breeding season and the c…
Gas mass derived by infrasound and UV cameras: Implications for mass flow rate
2016
Abstract Mass Flow Rate is one of the most crucial eruption source parameter used to define magnitude of eruption and to quantify the ash dispersal in the atmosphere. However, this parameter is in general difficult to be derived and no valid technique has been developed yet to measure it in real time with sufficient accuracy. Linear acoustics has been applied to infrasonic pressure waves generated by explosive eruptions to indirectly estimate the gas mass erupted and then the mass flow rate. Here, we test on Stromboli volcano (Italy) the performance of such methodology by comparing the acoustic derived results with independent gas mass estimates obtained with UV cameras, and constraining th…
Ash-plume dynamics and eruption source parameters by infrasound and thermal imagery: The 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption
2013
During operational ash-cloud forecasting, prediction of ash concentration and total erupted mass directly depends on the determination of mass eruption rate (MER), which is typically inferred from plume height. Uncertainties for plume heights are large, especially for bent-over plumes in which the ascent dynamics are strongly affected by the surrounding wind field. Here we show how uncertainties can be reduced if MER is derived directly from geophysical observations of source dynamics. The combination of infrasound measurements and thermal camera imagery allows for the infrasonic type of source to be constrained (a dipole in this case) and for the plume exit velocity to be calculated (54–14…
Cretaceous ultrapotassic magmatism from the Sava-Vardar Zone of the Balkans
2020
Highlights • Geochemically diverse Late Cretaceous small-volume magmatism in the Sava-Vardar Zone. • Late Cretaceous ultrapotassic lava, equivalent of minette and kersantite. • Magma derivation from a LREE and K enriched, garnet-bearing anciently metasomatized mantle source. • Magmatism occurred either in a fore-arc setting or is associated with transtensional tectonics. Abstract Late Cretaceous global plate reorganization associated with the inception of counterclockwise rotation of Africa relative to Europe initiated in the Balkan region small-volume magmatism of diverse geochemical signature along the enigmatic Sava-Vardar Zone. We study a Late Cretaceous lamprophyric sill in Ripanj vill…
Phlogopite-pargasite coexistence in an oxygen reduced spinel-peridotite ambient
2021
AbstractThe occurrence of phlogopite and amphibole in mantle ultramafic rocks is widely accepted as the modal effect of metasomatism in the upper mantle. However, their simultaneous formation during metasomatic events and the related sub-solidus equilibrium with the peridotite has not been extensively studied. In this work, we discuss the geochemical conditions at which the pargasite-phlogopite assemblage becomes stable, through the investigation of two mantle xenoliths from Mount Leura (Victoria State, Australia) that bear phlogopite and the phlogopite + amphibole (pargasite) pair disseminated in a harzburgite matrix. Combining a mineralogical study and thermodynamic modelling, we predict …
Whole-rock Nd–Hf isotopic study of I-type and peraluminous granitic rocks from the Chinese Altai: Constraints on the nature of the lower crust and te…
2017
Abstract The nature of the lower crust and tectonic setting of the Chinese Altai in the early to middle Paleozoic are still hotly debated. Decoupling between zircon Hf and whole-rock Nd isotopic systems for granites results in different interpretations for the above issues. In order to solve the problem, whole-rock Nd–Hf isotopic analyses were conducted on representative early to middle Paleozoic I-type granite and strongly peraluminous granites and rhyolites from the Chinese Altai. The I-type granites show metaluminous to weakly peraluminous feature and have eNd(t) values ranging from − 2.2 to + 0.8 and eHf(t) from + 3.9 to + 12.9, respectively. The strongly peraluminous granites and rhyol…
Raindrop size distribution and terminal velocity for rainfall erosivity studies. A review
2019
Abstract The knowledge of the rainfall drop size distribution (DSD) at the land surface is essential for understanding precipitation mechanisms affecting soil erosion processes. Rainfall erosivity is defined as the potential of rain to cause erosion and it can be evaluated by rainfall kinetic power, which is determined by DSD and raindrop terminal velocity. This paper firstly deals with the raindrop terminal velocity estimate. Then the most widely used DSD are reviewed highlighting the difference between the raindrop size distribution per unit volume of air and that per unit area and time. The reliability of the available kinetic power-rainfall intensity relationships and their application …
An experimental study of the role of partial melts of sediments versus mantle melts in the sources of potassic magmatism
2019
Abstract Potassium-rich lavas with K/Na of >2 are common in orogenic and anorogenic intraplate magmatic provinces. However, in the primitive mantle, the concentration of Na exceeds that of K by 10 times. The source of K-rich lavas thus needs to be either K-enriched or Na-depleted to account for high K/Na ratios. The geochemical and isotopic compositions of high 87Sr/86Sr post-collisional lavas show that their mantle source contains a recycled crustal component. These highly K-enriched lavas with crustal like trace element patterns are termed “orogenic lamproites” and are compositionally distinct from K-rich “anorogenic lamproites” that show lower 87Sr/86Sr and a trace element pattern that r…
Warm season precipitation signal in δ 2 H values of wood lignin methoxyl groups from high elevation larch trees in Switzerland
2017
RATIONALE In this study, we tested stable hydrogen isotope ratios of wood lignin methoxyl groups (δ 2Hmethoxyl values) as a palaeoclimate proxy in dendrochronology. This is a quite new method in the field of dendrochronology and the sample preparation is much simpler than the methods used before to measure δ2H values from wood. METHODS We measured δ 2Hmethoxyl values in high elevation larch trees (Larix decidua Mill.) from Simplon Valley (southern Switzerland). Thirty-seven larch trees were sampled and five individuals analysed for their δ 2Hmethoxyl values at annual (1971-2009) and pentadal resolution (1746-2009). The δ 2Hmethoxyl values were measured as CH3I released upon treatment of the…
