The interest in using bio-materials in pavement engineering has grown significantly over the last decades due to environmental concerns about the use of non-recoverable natural resources. In this paper, bio-materials are used together with Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) to restore some of the properties of the aged bitumen present in mixtures with high RA content. For this purpose, two bio-materials are studied and compared to conventional and polymer modified bitumens. Blends of these materials with RA bitumen were produced and studied to simulate a 50% RA mixture. An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of two bio-additives as rejuvenators on the properties of asphalt mixtures containing 50% RAP and their binder constituents containing 37% RAP binder. Before mixing, the rejuvenators were blended with fresh bitumen and the extracted and recovered RAP bitumen, and changes in the rheological properties of the binders were assessed using performance grading (PG) criteria. The results showed that both rejuvenators could improve the low-temperature performance of the aged RAP binder and restore its low-temperature properties. The use of high Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) content mixtures together with binders produced from renewable resources (biobinders) is one of the current challenges in pavement engineering research. Effect of additives on the structural organization of asphaltene aggregates in bitumen

Abstract Bitumens are composite materials whose complex organization hinders the rational understanding of their relationships between composition, structure and performances. So, research attempting to shed more light in this field is required. In this work Wide Angle X ray Scattering (WAXS) has been used to explore the influence of six opportunely chosen additives on the bitumen structure with the aim to ultimately correlate the findings with the bitumen performances. A Study Using Sulfur K-Edge XAS of Bitumens, Asphaltenes, Maltenes and their Oxidation Products by Comparison with Model Compounds

High resolution Sulfur K-edge XANES spectra have been recorded at the ESRF on test samples of bitumen, asphaltene and maltene fractions and various model compounds. All these fractions were found to have a low content of sulfidic species as opposed to thiophenic species and it is therefore not surprising that thermally oxidized samples (RTFOT) had also a low content (1%) of sulfoxides. This is indeed consistent with the absence of any detectable S=O signature in the EXAFS spectra which were recorded over more than 1300 eV using the undulator gap scan technique.
