Acute and reversible Pisa syndrome as unusual presentation of portosystemic encephalopathy

Abstract We present the first case of acute and reversible Pisa Syndrome, as a clinical manifestation of a portosystemic encephalopathy bout occurring in a patient affected with cirrhosis and clinical-radiological signs of acquired hepatocerebral degeneration, without exposure to psychotropic medications. A 62 year-old man suffering from cirrhosis was admitted to our hospital for sudden onset of mild confusion and postural change. He was observed walking and standing with a tilt toward the right during the last two hours. On neurological examination, he showed bilateral asterixis and extrapyramidal signs. Heightened levels of support provision are systematically observed in adults immediately following natural disasters, yet knowledge about adolescents' social support provision is less extensive. This longitudinal study of 262 adolescents assessed their help-providing behaviors during and after a flood. It was hypothesized that social support provided by adolescents would relate to subsequent perceptions of their relationships with others and perceptions of the self. W artykule omówiono zagadnienie muzycznej aktywności cymbalistów, którzy zmuszeni byli do migracji z przedwojennych kresów wschodnich (Wileńszczyzny, Galicji Wschodniej) na Dolny Śląsk po II wojnie światowej. Crystal Structures and Cytotoxicity of ent-Kaurane-Type Diterpenoids from Two Aspilia Species

A phytochemical investigation of the roots of Aspilia pluriseta led to the isolation of ent-kaurane-type diterpenoids and additional phytochemicals (1⁻23). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopic and mass spectrometric analyses. The absolute configurations of seven of the ent-kaurane-type diterpenoids (3⁻6, 6b, 7 and 8) were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Eleven of the compounds were also isolated from the roots and the aerial parts of Aspilia mossambicensis. The literature NMR assignments for compounds 1 and 5 were revised. Long-term effect of arsenic exposure: Results from an occupational cohort study

Background In 1976 in Manfredonia (Italy), arsenic was released into the atmosphere due to an accident in a petrochemical plant. We aimed to analyze the mortality of workers involved in the factory for the site cleaning activities. Methods The cohort consisted of 1467 workers grouped into contract, fertilizer, and plastic workers. The outcome of interest was mortality for specific causes. Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were computed. Results For all workers and all causes of death combined, the SMR was less than 1.0. By constructing a series of Lyapunov functions, novel H1 robust syn- chronization controllers are designed, whose control regulation possess the characteristic of simpleness and explicitness. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the e ectiveness of the proposed techniques.

Darbā ir veikta augsnes granulometriska pārbaude izmantojot sedimentācijas metodi un lāzerdifrakcijas metodi izmantojot daļiņu lieluma analizatoru Mastersizer 3000. Visi iegūtie dati tiek analizēti, salīdzinot izmantotas metodes savā starpā. Visiem zemes frakcijām iegūtiem ar lāzerdifrakcijas metodi tika izvērtēti to drošības intervāli un iespējami datu novirzes cēloni no sedimentācijas metodes.

Mercury and halogen emissions from Masaya and Telica volcanoes, Nicaragua

We report measurements of Hg, SO2, and halogens (HCl, HBr, HI) in volcanic gases from Masaya volcano, Nicaragua, and gaseous SO2 and halogens from Telica volcano, Nicaragua. Mercury measurements were made with a Lumex 915+ portable mercury vapor analyzer and gold traps, while halogens, CO2 and S species were monitored with a portable multi gas sensor and filter packs. Lumex Hg concentrations in the plume were consistently above background and ranged up to 350 ng m-3. Hg/SO2 mass ratios measured with the real-time instruments ranged from 1.1 × 10-7 to 3.5 × 10-5 (mean 2 × 10-5).
