Immunolocalization of Poly ADP-Ribose on Drosophila Polytene Chromosomes
2011
Poly ADP-ribosylation (PARylation) is a posttranslational protein modification catalyzed by poly -ADP-ribose polymerases (PARPs). Poly ADP-ribose metabolism is involved in a wide range of biological processes, such as maintenance of genome stability, transcriptional regulation, energy metabolism, and programed cell death. Recently, chromatin components, including histones, have been shown to be targets of PARylation. Unlike mammals, which have several PARP-encoded genes, the model organism Drosophila melanogaster has only one PARP gene, highly related to mammalian PARP1. These features make flies a great model system to study PARP biology. Commercially available antibodies recognizing this …
Organized interests in post-communist policy-making: a new dataset for comparative research
2022
AbstractThis article familiarizes readers with the international research project ‘The Missing Link: Exploring Organized Interests in Post-Communist Policy-Making’ (OrgIntCEE). The project team has focused on how populations of organized interests in the region have evolved, how they interact with state institutions as well as the group-specific characteristics driving access to policy-makers. The project also explores how Europeanization has affected post-communist interest groups as well as other factors contributing to their “coming-of-age.” We provide a comprehensive overview of the population ecology and survey datasets, while shedding light on the challenges during the data collection…
Evaluation of the improvement of sensibility with the new IOL Master software version 5.4.3
2009
Purpose To evaluate the improvement of sensibility of the new IOL-Master version 5.4.3 compared with the version 4.08. Methods 214 eyes of 115 patients were examined in a cataract preoperative evaluation making use of both IOL-Master software versions 5.4.3 and 4.08. The type and severity of the lens opacification was assessed by slitlamp biomicroscopy. Results In 182 of the eyes examined both versions were capable to determine the AL; in 29 the version 4.01 could not determine AL whereas the version 5.4.3 was able to measure it; these cases showed posterior capsular cataract (16), dense nuclear cataract (11), posterior synechiae (1) and asteroid hyalosis (1). Finally, the AL of 3 eyes coul…
The Two Loop Crossed Ladder Vertex Diagram with Two Massive Exchanges
2008
We compute the (three) master integrals for the crossed ladder diagram with two exchanged quanta of equal mass. The differential equations obeyed by the master integrals are used to generate power series expansions centered around all the singular (plus some regular) points, which are then matched numerically with high accuracy. The expansions allow a fast and precise numerical calculation of the three master integrals (better than 15 digits with less than 30 terms in the whole real axis). A conspicuous relation with the equal-mass sunrise in two dimensions is found. Comparison with a previous large momentum expansion is made finding complete agreement.
Master's level education in biomedical optics: four-year experience at the University of Latvia
2000
Pilot program for Master's studies on Biomedical Optics has been developed and launched at University of Latvia in 1995. The Curriculum contains several basic subjects like Fundamentals of Biomedical Optics, Medical Lightguides, Anatomy and Physiology, Lasers and Non-coherent Light Sources, Optical Instrumentation for Healthcare, Optical Methods for Patient Treatment, Basic Physics, etc. Special English Terminology and Laboratory-Clinical Praxis are also involved, and the Master Theses is the final step for the degree award. Following one four-year teaching experience, some observations, conclusions and eventual future activities are discussed.

High-throughput drug screening by Printing Biology
2015
Printing biology is our way to define a novel field employing material printing techniques generally used in plastic electronics to solve important issues of biology by miniaturized and high-throughput platforms. In this field, we already showed the possibility to use Dip Pen Lithography to fabricate single-cell biochips [1]. Also,we employed non-contact patterning methods such as inkjet printing methods to fabricate microarrays for drug screening at solid-liquid interfaces [2] or in picoliter-scale liquid droplets [3] so enabling high-throughput screening of chemical libraries onto disease-based targets. In this regard, printing methods would greatly reduce times and costs of standard drug…
Applying Dynamic Performance Management to Public Emergency Management: An Analysis of the Wenchuan Earthquake
2020
Previous studies in public emergency management confirm that collaboration assumes a relevant role in strengthening society’s capacity to cope with complex phenomena, such as disasters. However, empirical researches on emergency management show problems in performance measurement, mainly in employing narrow measures focusing on the results of single organisations rather than the entire system. Starting from a Chinese earthquake (Wenchuan) case, as an example, we use the dynamic performance management approach to develop a performance framework. This framework aims at investigating the interrelationships of different actors involved in emergency management and designing appropriate public em…
Modeling the escalation/de-escalation of response operation levels in disaster response networks using hierarchical Colored Petri Nets (CPN) approach
2018
In emergency situations, the first responders need to act promptly to situations, while the disaster management authorities' response might not be at the same speed. Delays by disaster management authorities had a direct impact on response operations led response teams to the shift away from command and control structures to net-centric ones. This paper is part of a study to examine patterns of emerging organizational relations and coordination structures in disaster response operations. Understanding coordination patterns in disaster chaos can help to integrate those patterns in the planning and execution in the modern disaster management operations. We use dynamic modeling methods to anal…
Induction of Apoptosis, Autophagy and Ferroptosis by Thymus vulgaris and Arctium lappa Extract in Leukemia and Multiple Myeloma Cell Lines
2020
Thymus vulgaris and Arctium lappa have been used as a folk remedy in the Iraqi Kurdistan region to deal with different health problems. The aim of the current study is to investigate the cytotoxicity of T. vulgaris and A. lappa in leukemia and multiple myeloma (MM) cell lines and determine the mode of cell death triggered by the most potent cytotoxic fractions of both plants in MM. Resazurin assay was used to evaluate cytotoxic and ferroptosis activity, apoptosis, and modulation in the cell cycle phase were investigated via Annexin V-FITC/PI dual stain and cell-cycle arrest assays. Furthermore, we used western blotting assay for the determination of autophagy cell death. n-Hexane, chlorofor…
