Pentamidine rescues contractility and rhythmicity in a Drosophila model of myotonic dystrophy heart dysfunction

2015

Up to 80% of individuals with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) will develop cardiac abnormalities at some point during the progression of their disease, the most common of which is heart blockage of varying degrees. Such blockage is characterized by conduction defects and supraventricular and ventricular tachycardia, and carries a high risk of sudden cardiac death. Despite its importance, very few animal model studies have focused on the heart dysfunction in DM1. Here, we describe the characterization of the heart phenotype in a Drosophila model expressing pure expanded CUG repeats under the control of the cardiomyocyte-specific driver GMH5-Gal4. Morphologically, expression of 250 CUG repeat…

Zinc isotopes in Late Pleistocene fossil teeth from a Southeast Asian cave setting preserve paleodietary information

2020

Significance Dietary habits, especially meat consumption, represent a key aspect in the behavior and evolution of fossil hominin species. Here, we explore zinc (Zn) isotope ratios in tooth enamel of fossil mammals. We show discrimination between different trophic levels and demonstrate that Zn isotopes could prove useful in paleodietary studies of fossil hominin, or other mammalian species, to assess their consumption of animal versus plant resources. We also demonstrate the high preservation potential of pristine diet-related Zn isotope ratios, even under tropical conditions with poor collagen preservation, such as the studied depositional context in Southeast Asia. However, assessing the …

2017

Roman building materials often arose a growing interest through their presence in early contexts, sometimes way before Gallic Wars. Made from natural resources, their final shape corresponds to anthropogenic and cultural constraints. However, even if building materials are not neglected during archaeological excavations, so far they have been considered as playing a minor part in understanding ancient sites. Economical, technical and architectural aspects are regularly mentioned, creating the picture of an exploited « landscape » around the studied areas, but the question of materials as cultural markers witnessing intercultural relations between Rome and Gallic tribes has never really been…

« Dans le goût de l’antique »

2021

2008

Excavations at the site of Le Vignaud 3, Langlade, situated at the heart of the Vaunage, have revealed a settlement constructed in dry stone which fits perfectly within the local Fontbouisse tradition (as exemplified at Boussargues, Le Rocher-du-Causse, etc.). As well as being of architectural interest, particularly in relation to the internal organisation of enclosed sites, the site also produced a large number of finds (pottery, lithics, animal bones, etc.) which provide evidence of Fontbouisse culture and Bell Beaker occupation. The stratigraphic evidence relating these two cultures, and the results of the preliminary analysis of the finds, provide new evidence concerning the adoption of…

Describing knowledge of the domain of risk and catastrophe by the creation of an ontology

2010

We introduce an ontology of the domain of risk and catastrophe. This ontology is a conceptual model for describing knowledge from a set of concepts linked by semantic and taxonomic relations. We propose a conceptual framework which can be used to analyze various types of events, concentrated or dispersed, whether natural, industrial / technological or social. Our approach distinguishes a factual part from a representational one. The factual part describes the terminology used to depict what happened (e.g. 30 died on some bridge). The representational part depicts the standpoints and judgments of the various actors of the system (there has been an accident, a serious accident or catastrophe)…

Analysis of the 2011 Japan's triple disaster from a conceptual ontology of the domain of risk and disaster,

2012

International audience; In this paper, we propose to use the factual part of a conceptual ontology realized in 2009 (Provitolo and al. 2009 a) to analyze the disaster that occurred in Japan on 11 March 2011 and which was characterized by a sequence of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident. Many papers, reports, videos and press articles were published, each one providing a wide variety of information. Some fo- cused on the massive earthquake that triggered the devastating tsunami waves along the eastern coast of the Tohoku region while others mainly analyzed the nuclear crisis. The aim of this work is to syn- thesize in visual form information from various sources and to produce differen…
