Single zircon evaporation ages from the Oban Massif, southeastern Nigeria
1998
Abstract A single zircon geochronological study in the Oban Massif of southeastern Nigeria, using the evaporation technique, provides evidence for the existence of Palaeoproterozoic crustal components in the area. The banded gneiss in the Oban village yielded a 207 Pb 206 Pb age of 1931.9±0.8 Ma, whilst charnockites associated with this gneiss provided an emplacement age of 584.5 ± 1.0 Ma. The volumetrically most important intrusive unit in the Oban area is a granodiorite that yielded a zircon age of 616.9 ± 1 Ma. These ages suggest that the banded gneiss is the oldest rock in the Oban Massif and that the emplacement of granodiorite and the formation of charnockites took place during the Pa…
Deep structural setting of the North American-Caribbean plate boundary in eastern Guatemala
2009
The holocene marine record of unrest, volcanism, and hydrothermal activity of campi flegrei and somma-vesuvius
2020
Abstract This chapter illustrates the marine record of a spectrum of volcanic, hydrothermal, and sedimentary features that characterize the Latest Pleistocene–Holocene evolution of the Naples Bay offshore Campi Flegrei and Somma–Vesuvius. The work is based on review of previous literature integrated with interpretation of new high-resolution marine Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) derived from swath bathymetry surveys and high-resolution reflection seismic profiles calibrated with marine gravity core data. Seismic profiles from Pozzuoli Bay provide detailed images of the ring fault system and resurgent dome associated with the evolution of the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) collapse caldera and …
Pilosella argyrogaliciana, P. argyrolegionensis and P. megargyrocoma (Asteraceae): three new species from the Cantabrian Mountains (N. Spain)
2013
In this paper, we describe three new species of Pilosella ( Asteraceae ) from the Cantabrian Mountains (N Spain): P. argyrogaliciana Mateo & Egido, P. argyrolegionensis Mateo & Egido and P. megargyrocoma Mateo & Egido. All of them are intermediate species of P. argyrocoma , endemic to the S, C and NW Iberian Peninsula and N Africa. For each species, we provide a detailed description, together with a discussion and a table with the diagnostic morphological characters used to separate these species from their morphologically closest species. We also provide images of type material.
Etna and the perception of volcanic risk
2013
Sicily’s uneven geological structure is positioned within a system of tectonic plates, and its very active volcano has always made it prone to disasters. Many Sicilian cities have in fact been destroyed by natural events many times over the centuries. This can certainly be understood negatively as the destruction of entire towns, the emission of volcanic ash, and the mutation of landscapes by a terrifying force have instilled fearful memories in local populations. But from another point of view one must consider the positive elements of Etna. Its beautiful landscapes were a major attraction on the Grand Tour, and its inhabitants have long associated the volcano with the concept of rebirth a…
Chemical composition of the essential oil from Pulicaria vulgaris var. graeca (Sch.-Bip.) Fiori (Asteraceae) growing wild in Sicily and its antimicro…
2015
In this study the chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Pulicaria vulgaris var. graeca (Sch.-Bip.) Fiori collected in Sicily was evaluated by GC and GCâMS. The main components of P. vulgaris var. graeca oil were hexadecanoic acid (21.7%), β-caryophyllene (14.3%) and geranyl propionate (8.2%). The comparison with other studied oils of genus Pulicaria is discussed. Antibacterial activity against several bacteria, including some ones infesting historical art craft, was also determined.
A luminal glycoprotein drives dose-dependent diameter expansion of the Drosophila melanogaster hindgut tube
2012
An important step in epithelial organ development is size maturation of the organ lumen to attain correct dimensions. Here we show that the regulated expression of Tenectin (Tnc) is critical to shape the Drosophila melanogaster hindgut tube. Tnc is a secreted protein that fills the embryonic hindgut lumen during tube diameter expansion. Inside the lumen, Tnc contributes to detectable O-Glycans and forms a dense striated matrix. Loss of tnc causes a narrow hindgut tube, while Tnc over-expression drives tube dilation in a dose-dependent manner. Cellular analyses show that luminal accumulation of Tnc causes an increase in inner and outer tube diameter, and cell flattening within the tube wall,…
Enseñanza de las ciencias : revista de investigación y experiencias didácticas
2021
This research focuses on teacher training in the Master's Degree in Secondary Educa- tion Teaching. The teaching guides of the specialisations of Biology and Geology and Physics and Che- mistry of the Master's Degree were analysed in order to know to what extent Education for Sustaina- bility (EfS) is present. Collaborative teams of teachers were arranged so as to promote the acquisition of competences in Sustainability among the training goals and to encourage resources and procedures for their effective achievement. This paper includes contributions that try to promote attention to EfS in Secondary School teacher training. Esta investigación se enmarca en la formación del profesorado en e…
Franciszkańska kuracja Serca Pana Jezusa w Gliwicach w latach 1925–1945
2016
Artykuł jest kontynuacją międzywojennej historii gliwickich franciszkanów i genezy powstania samodzielnej jednostki kościelnej w tzw. dzielnicy hutniczej, zamieszczonym w tomie 35 „Studiów Teologiczno-Historycznych Śląska Opolskiego” z 2015 r.
