Regenerative Medicine as an Emergent Cluster in Tampere Region

2015

[EN]: Clusters are important for regional economies and emergent clusters are in a key position, as a means of adding more diversification to the current economic activity by involving new technologies and industries. Science-based industries may be the most promising in this regard since they are encouraged to develop and enhance the economic imaginaries of territories under the umbrella of radical innovations or in the name of broadening the current economic model based on mostly traditional industries. Regenerative medicine (RM) could be an example of these so-called emergent clusters. Regenerative medicine is highly dependent on academic research, which means that local territories must…

Increased autophagy and apoptosis contribute to muscle atrophy in a myotonic dystrophy type 1 Drosophila model

2015

ABSTRACT Muscle mass wasting is one of the most debilitating symptoms of myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) disease, ultimately leading to immobility, respiratory defects, dysarthria, dysphagia and death in advanced stages of the disease. In order to study the molecular mechanisms leading to the degenerative loss of adult muscle tissue in DM1, we generated an inducible Drosophila model of expanded CTG trinucleotide repeat toxicity that resembles an adult-onset form of the disease. Heat-shock induced expression of 480 CUG repeats in adult flies resulted in a reduction in the area of the indirect flight muscles. In these model flies, reduction of muscle area was concomitant with increased apopto…

INVESTIGATION OF NEO ASTEROIDS 2006 VB14 AND 1986 DA

2019

566 positions and photometric observa- tions of NEO objects 2006 VB14 = Y5705 = 345705 and 1986 DA were obtained with Baldone Schmidt telescope in 2018 and 2019, to detecting rotation period and other physical characteristics. A Fourier transform was applied to determine the rotation period for asteroid 1986 DA=6178. Value 3.12 ± 0.02h was obtained. Observations confirm the previously obtained rotation period P = 3.25h for 2006 VB14.

ASTEROIDS SEARCH RESULTS IN LARGE PHOTOGRAPHIC SKY SURVEYS

2017

Photographic observations of XX century contained numerous and varied information about all objects  and  events  of  the  Universe  fixed  on  plates.  The original and interesting observations of small bodies of the Solar  system  in  previous  years  can  be  selected  and  used for various scientific tasks. Existing databases and online services can help make such selection easily and quickly.  The observations of chronologically earlier ppositions, photometric  evaluation  of  brightness  for  long  periods  of time allow refining the orbits of asteroids and identifying various non-stationaries. Photographic observations of Northern Sky Survey project  and  observations  of  clusters  …

OBTAINING POSITIONS OF ASTEROIDS FROM DIGITIZED PROCESSING OF PHOTOGRAPHIC OBSERVATIONS IN BALDONE OBSERVATORY (CODE 069)

2016

Digital processing of photographic plates of star fields allows to determine with high accuracy the coordinates and stellar magnitudes for all registered objects on these plates. The processing results can be used for a broad search for images of small bodies of the Solar system and determination of their coordinates. From the observations of earlier epoch, we can extract information about the locations of these bodies well before discovering them. Modern approach to processing early photographic observations with new technologies can be an effective instrument for rediscovery of asteroids and correction their orbits. We analyzed the results of digital processing of observations of clusters…

cis-regulatory variation modulates susceptibility to enteric infection in the Drosophila genetic reference panel

2020

Abstract Background Resistance to enteric pathogens is a complex trait at the crossroads of multiple biological processes. We have previously shown in the Drosophila Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP) that resistance to infection is highly heritable, but our understanding of how the effects of genetic variants affect different molecular mechanisms to determine gut immunocompetence is still limited. Results To address this, we perform a systems genetics analysis of the gut transcriptomes from 38 DGRP lines that were orally infected with Pseudomonas entomophila. We identify a large number of condition-specific, expression quantitative trait loci (local-eQTLs) with infection-specific ones located …

VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY OF MEASUREMENTS OF THE PARAMETERS OF SMILE AESTHETICS: A COMPARISON BETWEEN DIGITAL AND PLASTER MODELS

2020

This study aims to evaluate the validity and reliability of the TRIOS3 Color intraoral scanner (3Shape A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark) and its associated Ortho Analyzer™ software in measuring parameters of smile aesthetics compared with measurements on plaster casts. The study sample comprised plaster casts and digital models obtained from 30 subjects. Height (H), mesiodistal diameter (MDD) and connecting space (CS) of the anterior teeth were measured with a digital calliper on the plaster models and with the orthodontic software on the digital models. Validity was assessed using a 2-tailed paired t-test; the reliability of measurements for intra-examiner was evaluated with the Intra-class Correl…

Parasitism of dolfinfhishes, Coryphaena hippurus and Coryphaena equiselis, in the western Mediterranean (Balearic Islands) and central-eastern Atlant…

1999

A total of 648 dolphinfishes were examined for internal and external parasites in western Mediterranean (Balearic Islands) and central-eastern Atlantic (Canary Islands) waters in order to make a comparative study between the two areas. The specimens studied from the Mediterranean Sea was Coryphaena hippurus, with 62 large individuals captured from May to September and 497 juveniles captured from August to December. The specimens studied from the central-eastern Atlantic were 39 adult C. hippurus and 49 adult Coryphaena equiselis. Parasites were found in 70% of the fish examined, and represented a total of nine endoparasitic taxa: six digeneans (Class Trematoda, Subclass Digenea; Dinurus tor…

Uddannelse som social kunstform?

2018

The effects of leadership development on women's career success

2019

This study extends our knowledge of leadership development, specifically Master's in Business Administration (MBA) programs, from a gender perspective. It presents a comprehensive case, women-only development program and conducts an empirical, longitudinal, qualitative study of the effect of one of the program modules, namely, the women-only MBA, on the women's career success. The empirical study focused on self-efficacy mechanisms for explaining the women's appraisals of their changes in abilities affecting their career success during the MBA program. The participants were interviewed twice: once at the beginning of the MBA and then after completing it. A trusting atmosphere, social suppor…
