Origin of neuronal-like receptors in Metazoa: cloning of a metabotropic glutamate/GABA-like receptor from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium.

1999

To date, no conclusive evidence has been presented for the existence of neuronal-like elements in Porifera (sponges). In the present study, isolated cells from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium are shown to react to the excitatory amino acid glutamate with an increase in the concentration of intracellular calcium [Ca2+]i. This effect can also be observed when the compounds L-quisqualic acid (L-QA) or L-(+)-2-amino-4-phosphonobutyric acid (L-AP-4) are used. The effect of L-QA and L-AP-4, both agonists for metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), can be abolished by the antagonist of group I mGluRs, (RS)-alpha-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine. These data suggest that sponge cells contain an mG…

An Overview of Public Concerns During the Recovery Period after a Major Earthquake: Nepal Twitter Analysis

2016

In responding to disasters, Twitter is extensively used, both for information exchange and mapping the crisis, among citizens, and in relation to national and international humanitarian responders. This paper reports Twitter analysis aimed at identifying the most pressing issues that arose in the short term recovery phase starting about a week after the Nepal earthquake, including the heretofore neglected topic of mismatch between international relief and local cultures. Based on Twitter data collected between April 30th and May 6th 2015. 1,074,864 raw messages apparently related to the Nepal earthquake were retrieved, filtered and analyzed. This exploratory adapts established frameworks fo…

Drawing and Project at the VChUTEMAS. Graphic Interpretations

2019

The article deals with the graphic study of the project for the Kominern Palace designed in 1929 by Lidija Komarova, one of the students of the Russian Laboratories known by the acronym VChUTEMAS, founded in 1920 in Moscow. Strongly characterized by the revolutionary atmosphere that was delineating the artistic progress based on the synthesis of all the plastic arts, the Russian Laboratories attributed to the architecture a position of the first order, a perfect association between the scientific possibility and the art technique. The redrawing of this project allows to deepen the compositional principles of the new architectural formation of the Eastern European avant-garde, providing digi…

Trade Union Practices in the EU and Latvia: Experience for Eastern Partnership Countries

2014

Abstract The article will show major dimensions in the experience of EU Member States that could be shared with the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries. The framework of the study is the EU concept of trade unions in social dialogue and social partnership in the public sector. This study outlines the concept of social dialogue as a core element of industrial relations and will focus on industrial relations specifically in the public sector. The authors have elaborated the approach to industrial relations and social dialogue taking into account comparative approach to definitions provided by international institutions such as ILO and OECD, as well as institutions in the EU and Latvia. Latvia…

The EU-Eastern Partnership Countries: Association Agreements and Transdisciplinarity in Studies, Training and Research

2014

Abstract The European Union (EU) signed Association Agreements on 27 June 2014 with Georgia, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine. The Association Agreement (AA) is the EU’s main instrument to bring the countries in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) closer to EU standards and norms. For the citizens of the EaP countries to benefit from these agreements, a more in-depth knowledge of the EU and the EU Member States is required to be reflected in a comparative approach to European Union studies. We examine these implications on the need to expand and adapt, the content and approach to research and teaching European Union studies, with the transdisciplinary approach becoming increasingly dominant, …

Middle-late Pleistocene eastern Mediterranean nutricline depth and coccolith preservation linked to Monsoon activity and Atlantic meridional overturn…

2022

Altres ajuts: Unidad de excelencia María de Maeztu CEX2019-000940-M; Universidade de Vigo's programme to attract excellent research talent (RR04092017) The eastern Mediterranean Sea lies under the influence of high- and low-latitude climatic systems. The northern part of the basin is affected by Atlantic depressions and continental and polar air masses that promote intermediate and deep-water formation. The southern part is influenced by subtropical conditions and monsoon activity. Monsoon intensification results in enhanced freshwater discharge from the Nile River and other (now dry) systems along the North African margin. This freshwater influx into the Mediterranean Sea reduces surface w…

Dzieje ludności żydowskiej na terenach latyfundium Zamoyskich za czasów linii kanclerskiej (Jan „Sariusz”, Tomasz, Jan „Sobiepan” Zamoyscy). Przyczyn…

2014

2012

In the 2011 campaign the southern and central apses, as well as the southern nave of the abbey church of St Peter, together with its immediate surroundings were excavated. The primary analysis of the eastern part of the Venetian town wall was undertaken as well. The geophysical survey of the western and south-eastern parts of the complex has equally been continued. The initial results allow us to present a phasing of the early Romanesque church, possibly preceded by two earlier churches, as well as to complete the ground plan thanks to the discovery of the former bell-tower, containing a funerary room (maybe a chapel) in its ground level. Furthermore, the monastic topography was clarified b…

Thermoelastic stress analysis of a 2D stress field using a single detector infrared scanner and lock-in filtering

2009

A low resolution, low cost, fast infrared scanner is used to acquire the temperature change along a line on the surface of cyclically loaded samples. The temperature signal is sampled versus time by exploiting the raster scanning movement of the thermocamera single detector. The temperature data is then post-processed by a Fast Fourier Transform based lock- in algorithm implemented in MATLAB ® , in order to filter out the thermoelastic effect induced temperature change. A procedure is also implemented in order to extend the data sampling time by opportunely synchronising successively grabbed data frames. The effectiveness of such synchronisation procedure is first demonstrated by performing…
