Short-term occupations at high elevation during the Middle Paleolithic at Kalavan 2 (Republic of Armenia).

2021

The Armenian highlands encompasses rugged and environmentally diverse landscapes and is characterized by a mosaic of distinct ecological niches and large temperature gradients. Strong seasonal fluctuations in resource availability along topographic gradients likely prompted Pleistocene hominin groups to adapt by adjusting their mobility strategies. However, the role that elevated landscapes played in hunter-gatherer settlement systems during the Late Pleistocene (Middle Palaeolithic [MP]) remains poorly understood. At 1640 m above sea level, the MP site of Kalavan 2 (Armenia) is ideally positioned for testing hypotheses involving elevation-dependent seasonal mobility and subsistence strateg…

Intravital Microscopy in the Cremaster Muscle Microcirculation for Endothelial Dysfunction Studies

2015

The intravital microscopy in the mouse cremaster muscle microcirculation is a method widely used to visualize in vivo blood cells interacting with the endothelium and within the vessels. Therefore, it is a suitable technique to study leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions along every stage of the canonical leukocyte recruitment cascade: rolling, adhesion, intravascular crawling, and migration both in postcapillary venules and arterioles of the mouse cremasteric microcirculation. This technique also enables to assess vessel functionality, since hemodynamic parameters such as shear stress, flow rate, and vasodilatation/vasoconstriction, among other vascular events, can be additionally determ…

Effects of caffeoyl conjugates of isoprenyl-hydroquinone glucoside and quinic acid on leukocyte function.

2002

The activity of three prenylhydroquinone glucosides (1-3) and four caffeoylquinic esters (4-7), obtained from Phagnalon rupestre, on elastase release, myeloperoxidase activity and superoxide and leukotriene B(4) production from polymorphonuclear leukocytes was determined. 4,5-Dicaffeoylquinic acid strongly inhibited elastase release with an IC(50) value of 4.8 microM. Methylated caffeoylquinic derivatives were the most potent inhibitors of myeloperoxidase (IC(50) near 60 microM), whereas both methylated and free carboxyl isomers inhibited superoxide production with similar potency (IC(50) between 27 and 42 microM). The monocaffeoyl conjugate of prenylhydroquinone glucoside (3), the most pot…

Chiral complexes of titanium containing a linked amido-cyclopentadienyl ligand: synthesis, structure, and asymmetric imine hydrogenation catalysis

2000

Abstract A series of mono- and disubstituted derivatives (−)-(S)-Ti(η5:η1-C5Me4SiMe2NCHMePh)(X)Cl (X=CH2SiMe3, BH4) and (−)-(S)-Ti(η5:η1-C5Me4SiMe2NCHMePh)X2 (X=OSO2CF3, OiPr, Me, CH2Ph) was prepared from (−)-(S)-Ti(η5:η1-C5Me4SiMe2NCHMePh)Cl2 without significant racemization at the stereogenic center. The monosubstituted complexes are formed as mixtures of diastereomers. One diastereomeric monoalkyl (STi, SC)-Ti(η5:η1-C5Me4SiMe2NCHMePh)(CH2SiMe3)Cl was characterized by X-ray single crystal structure analysis. When the (−)-(S)-NCHMePh group is attached to planar chiral ring moieties 3-tBuC5H3, C9H6, and C9H5(SiMe3)-3 and coordinated at the titanium center, diastereomeric mixtures are formed…

Sesquiterpenes from Centaurea aspera

2005

Abstract The aerial parts of two subspecies of Centaurea aspera L. (Asteraceae) yielded the germacranolides 1a – h , 2 , 3 , 4 and 5 , the elemane derivatives 6d and 6f , the lignan matairesinol, the degraded terpene loliolide, and the onopordopicrin–valine dimeric adduct 7 . From these, compounds 1e , 3 and 6d are natural products. The chemical composition of the two subspecies is very similar, a circumstance which does not support a taxonomic subdivision of the species.

ChemInform Abstract: Phenolic Glycosides from Phagnalon rupestre

2010

Analysis of the butanol-soluble fraction from the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Phagnalon rupestre (Asteraceae) has led to the isolation of seven phenolic compounds. Three have been identified on the basis of their NMR spectra as new natural compounds: the lignan 7,7'-bis-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-8,8'-dihydroxymethyl-tetrahydrofuran-4-O-beta-glucopyranoside (1), the prenylhydroquinone glycoside 1-O-beta-glucopyranosyl-1,4-dihydroxy-2-(3'-hydroxy-3'-methylbutyl) benzene (2) and the acetophenone glycoside 12-O-beta-glucopyranosyl-9beta,12-dihydroxytremetone (3). The known flavonoids apigenin-7-O-beta-glucoside, luteolin-7-O-beta-glucoside, luteolin-7-O-beta-glucuronide and …

Precipitation responses to ENSO and IOD in the Maldives: Implications of large-scale modes of climate variability in weather-related preparedness

2020

Abstract This research seeks to address the extent to which indices of large-scale modes of climate variability (El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)) can be linked to physical differences in the local mean and extreme rainfall conditions experienced in the Maldives in order to suggest implications for disaster risk reduction (DRR). While some significant differences in precipitation metrics do occur at the local level between different phases of the large-scale modes of climate variability studied, they do not occur for all sites studied. While the constrained availability of historical meteorological data in the region is a limiting factor in this analysis, th…

Optimal Control of Dissipative Quantum Systems

2008

We study the control of finite dimensional quantum systems by external laser fields. After examining the concrete example of the diatomic molecular alignment in dissipative media, we are interested in the problem of optimal control, where the objective is to bring the system from an initial state into a given final state while minimizing a cost functional. The Pontryagin maximum principle (PMP) provides necessary conditions for optimality, by establishing that any optimal trajectory is the extremal solution of an extended problem of Hamiltonian structure. In this context, we perform the analysis of two particular systems. The first one is a dissipative 2-level system, for which we determine…
