European guidelines on perioperative venous thromboembolism prophylaxis:Day surgery and fast-track surgery

2017

: In recent years, day surgery and fast-track surgery have experienced a continuous increase in volume. Many procedures are now performed on an outpatient protocol, including general, orthopaedic, oncological, reconstructive or vascular surgery. The management of these patients is safe, but the incidence of venous thromboembolism in this population remains unknown. Several risk factors can be identified and stratified derived from studies of inpatient surgical management (e.g. Caprini score). Recommendations for thromboprophylaxis should be tailored from the assessment of both personal and procedure-related risk factors, although with a lack of evidence for application in outpatient managem…

Normal Doppler Reference Values of the Pericallosal Artery

2015

Purpose: To provide the normal reference values of the Doppler flow of the pericallosal artery in relation to gestational age from 18 to 41 weeks of gestation. Materials and Methods: The pericallosal artery (PCA) was studied in 466 normal pregnancies. The pulsed Doppler evaluation of the pericallosal artery was done in A3 and A4 segments, and records from PI, RI and Vmax were studied. Results: The resistance index of the pericallosal artery in A3 / A4 segments exhibits a plateau from 18 to 31 weeks of gestation. After 31 weeks, a marked decrease becomes apparent. The pulsatility index of the pericallosal artery in A3 / A4 segments shows a plateau until 36 weeks of gestation. During the fina…

Long-Term Results of Buccal Mucosa Onlay Grafts in Hypospadias Repair

2010

Purpose Buccal mucosa onlay grafts are widely used in complex Hypospadias surgery. In a retrospective study we evaluated the long-term results in patients with a minimum follow-up of 5 years. Material and Methods All patients in who underwent buccal mucosa grafting for Hypospadias repair in our institution received a questionnaire and were invited for a follow-up visit. The questionnaire included two visual analogue scales (VAS) concerning the functional and cosmetic result (0 = very dissatisfied; 50 = satisfied; 100 = very satisfied). Results A total of 85 patients with a median age at the operation of 7.4 years (1 – 60 years) could be followed for a median of 8 years (5-16 years). In 36/8…

Epidemiology of foodborne Norovirus outbreaks in Catalonia, Spain

2008

Abstract Background Noroviruses are one of the principal biological agents associated with the consumption of contaminated food. The objective of this study was to analyse the size and epidemiological characteristics of foodborne outbreaks of gastroenteritis in Catalonia, a region in the northeast of Spain. Methods In all reported outbreaks of gastroenteritis associated with food consumption, faecal samples of persons affected were analysed for bacteria and viruses and selectively for parasites. Study variables included the setting, the number of people exposed, age, sex, clinical signs and hospital admissions. The study was carried out from October 2004 to October 2005. Results Of the 181 …

Guidelines for the management of women with severe pre-eclampsia

2021

Abstract Objective To provide national guidelines for the management of women with severe pre-eclampsia. Design A consensus committee of 26 experts was formed. A formal conflict-of-interest (COI) policy was developed at the onset of the process and enforced throughout. The entire guidelines process was conducted independently of any industrial funding. The authors were advised to follow the principles of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE®) system to guide assessment of quality of evidence. The potential drawbacks of making strong recommendations in the presence of low-quality evidence were emphasised. Methods The last SFAR and CNGOF guidelines on t…

The independent and combined influence of schizophrenia polygenic risk score and heavy cannabis use on risk for psychotic disorder: A case-control an…

2019

Background: Some recent studies have challenged the direction of causality for the association between cannabis use and psychotic disorder, suggesting that cannabis use initiation is explained by common genetic variants associated with risk of schizophrenia. We used data from the European Union Gene-Environment Interaction consortium (EUGEI) case-control study to test for the independent and combined effect of heavy cannabis use, and of Schizophrenia Polygenic risk score (SZ PRS), on risk for psychotic disorder. Methods: Genome-wide data were obtained from 492 first episode psychosis patients (FEPp) and from 787 controls of European Ancestry, and used to generate SZ PRS from the summary res…

Surgical treatment of cocaine-induced palatal perforations : report of three cases and literature review

2021

Destruction of the osteocartilaginous framework of the nose and sinuses is a well-known side effect of inhaled cocaine. Palate involvement is, however, a very uncommon event that may lead to oronasal communication with the subsequent food and liquids reflux and nasal speech. Given the addictive character of this etiologic agent, the management of cocaine-induced palatal perforations tends to be conservative by means of a prosthetic obturator. In this paper three cases with surgically treated cocaine-induced palatal perforations are reported and a review of the literature is made focusing on the management of this process. Despite the usual reluctancy, surgical palatal reconstruction should …

The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease among primary care patients in Poland: results from the LIPIDOGRAM2015 study

2020

Abstract Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is currently one of the leading cause of mortality in the European Union. Well-established, modifiable cardiovascular (CV) risk factors include hypertension (HTN), hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes mellitus (DM), obesity, low activity levels, poor diet and smoking. There are no current estimates on the prevalence of CV risk factors among Polish patients solely in the primary care setting. Methods A nationwide cross-sectional study, LIPIDOGRAM2015, was carried out in Poland in the 4th quarter of 2015 and 1st and 2nd quarters of 2016. 438 primary care physicians enrolled 13,724 adult patients that sought medical care for any medical reason in pri…
