Ovarian cysts in newborns.

Before the introduction of ultrasonography (US), ovarian cysts in newborns were thought to be rare. With the extended use of real-time US, prenatal detection has increased. There is still considerable controversy regarding the best treatment of these neonatal findings. A total of 27 instances in 24 consecutive newborns of antenatally-diagnosed ovarian cysts were reviewed for US data, management, and outcome to assess the ante- and postnatal evolution of the cyst and establish appropriate therapy. A 63-year-old woman presented elsewhere with a unifocal pT1, G3 transitional cell carcinoma at the bladder base in 1995. She underwent urethral sparing cystectomy and ileal neobladder. Intraoperative frozen section from the proximal urethra did not demonstrate tumor involvement. Final histological examination revealed pT1, pN2, G3 transitional cell carcinoma. Adjuvant chemotherapy was not given. In 1998 the patient had symptoms of obstructive voiding due to a 3 3 3 cm. solid mass at the neobladder-urethra anastomosis (see figure). Type I hiatal hernia is associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in 50–90% of cases. Several trials strongly support surgery as an effective alternative to medical therapy. Today, laparoscopic fundoplication is considered as the procedure of choice. However, primary laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair is associated with upto 42% recurrence rate. Mesh reinforcement of the crural closure decreases the recurrence but can lead to complications, above all nonabsorbable ones. We experiment a new totally absorbable mesh by Gore.Case. Purpose: Plasmalogens are particular phospholipids characterized by the presence of a vinyl-ether bond and of a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) at sn-1 and sn-2 positions of glycerol, respectively. Even if the plasmalogen content of organs and tissues is well documented, their biological functions are still enigmatic. Plasmalogen deficiency in DAPAT-/- mice leads to developmental abnormalities in retinal vasculature (Acar et al, ARVO 2007 E-Abstract 2978) and to persistent hyaloïd arteries. Pancoast's syndrome caused by lymph node metastasis from breast cancer.

Pancoast’s syndrome may be the result of neoplastic, inflammatory or infectious disease. We report an unusual case of Pancoast’s syndrome in a patient with metastatic breast cancer. A 54-year-old woman, affected by metastatic breast cancer, presented for severe shoulder pain, paraesthesia and numbness in the right arm. Despite further multiple lines of systemic chemotherapy, she developed a progressive enlargement of retropectoral, supraclavicular and infraclavicular lymph node metastases, which involved brachial plexus, apex of lung and anterior mediastinum. An unusual association of left‐sided gastroschisis and persistent right umbilical vein

Key Clinical Message Gastroschisis is a full‐thickness congenital abdominal wall defect usually occurring to the right of the umbilicus. About twenty cases of left‐sided gastroschisis have been reported, without reference to the laterality of the umbilical vein. This first case highlights the importance of considering and reporting this association by the perinatal team.
