A qualitative study of using movies as a means of escapism between Finns and immigrants in Finland

2017

Escapist use is often considered the main use for movies in Uses and Gratification research, however there is hardly a detailed account on such use, on what the movie audience escape into. The present study, which consists of a research article and a monograph, has tried to utilize a qualitative approach to provide a better understanding of escapist movie viewing. The other aspect of this research is trying to compare such use among Finnish nationals and immigrants in Finland to see how people from different backgrounds might vary in their escapist use of movies. Although no difference between Finns and immigrants living in Finland were seen in the data, due to limitation in its scale, this…

Häpeä suomalaisten mielisairaalamuistoissa

2019

Korostunut häpeän tunne liittyy olennaisesti niin mielenterveysongelmiin kuin psykiatriseen hoitotyöhön. Erityisesti mielisairaalaan joutuminen on monelle häpeällinen kokemus, josta on vaikeaa puhua. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelen mielisairaalakokemuksiin liittyvää häpeää  psykiatristen sairaaloiden potilaiden, omaisten ja henkilökunnan kirjoittamien muistojen valossa. Analysoin muistelijoiden kuvaamia häpeän kokemuksia kuvaten  häpeän kerronnallista rakentumista muistoissa. Pohdin mitkä tekijät ovat lisänneet, mitkä puolestaan helpottaneet mielisairaalakokemuksiin liittyvää häpeää. Eri muistelijaryhmien häpeän kokemukset ovat luonteeltaan erilaisia – potilaiden muistojen osalta niissä koro…

The focus and timing of gaze matters : Investigating collaborative knowledge construction in a simulation-based environment by combined video and eye…

2022

Although eye tracking has been successfully used in science education research, exploiting its potential in collaborative knowledge construction has remained sporadic. This article presents a novel approach for studying collaborative knowledge construction in a simulation-based environment by combining both the spatial and temporal dimensions of eye-tracking data with video data. For this purpose, we have investigated two undergraduate physics student pairs solving an electrostatics problem in a simulation-based environment via Zoom. The analysis of the video data of the students’ conversations focused on the different collaborative knowledge construction levels (new idea, explication, eval…

"Ikke alle piloter flyr" : implementering av telemedisin i norske kommuner

2019

Masteroppgave helse- og sosialinformatikk HSI500 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Running pilots is a widespread way of conducting innovations in the Norwegian health service, many of these projects are not implemented permanently or lead to lasting changes in services. Solutions based on Telemedicine are being tested, but the implementation rate does not match the existing ambitions. The aim of this study is to gain increased knowledge of some of the factors that are required for pilot projects in Telemedicine to go from pilots to permanent solutions, especially focused on stakeholders and their role. The thesis question is «What is the significance of different stakeholders in the municipalit…

Myotonic dystrophy: candidate small molecule therapeutics

2017

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a rare multisystemic neuromuscular disorder caused by expansion of CTG trinucleotide repeats in the noncoding region of the DMPK gene. Mutant DMPK transcripts are toxic and alter gene expression at several levels. Chiefly, the secondary structure formed by CUGs has a strong propensity to capture and retain proteins, like those of the muscleblind-like (MBNL) family. Sequestered MBNL proteins cannot then fulfill their normal functions. Many therapeutic approaches have been explored to reverse these pathological consequences. Here, we review the myriad of small molecules that have been proposed for DM1, including examples obtained from computational rational …

Comparison of the acute effects of anti-TNF-alpha drugs on a uveitis experimental model.

2010

To compare histopathological and biochemical effects of the anti-TNF-alpha drugs adalimumab and infliximab in a uveitis experimental model.Histopathological evaluation was performed 24 h after endotoxin (200 microg into the footpad) and drug administration, as well as biochemical analysis of oxidative stress-related markers in the aqueous humor.Severe inflammation was found in rat anterior chamber of the eye 24 h after endotoxin. Only infliximab administration partially prevented the endotoxin-induced disruption of the blood-aqueous barrier, as well as the increase in Rantes and MCP-1 concentration in aqueous humor. Both drugs ameliorated the histopathological score after endotoxin. Biochem…

Association of interleukin-10G microsatellite polymorphism with the susceptibility of ankylosing spondylitis

2013

Study suggests an association of IL10.G poly- morphisms with AS which might contribute to the increased or decreased susceptibility to AS. IL10.G8 and G7 microsatellites alleles appear as protective alleles against the development of AS in the German subjects investigated here. Allele IL10.G9 seems to be a risk factor for the development of AS. This protective effect of variant promoter alleles could be related to differences in IL- 10 production, which may be clinically relevant.

Altered (oxidized) C1q induces a rheumatoid arthritis-like destructive and chronic inflammation in joint structures in arthritis-susceptible rats.

1997

Previous studies have identified an altered C1q molecule in synovial fluids from the joints of rheumatoid arthritis patients. We therefore immunized arthritis-susceptible Lewis 1A.AVN rats with either native C1q (C1q nat), altered (oxidized) C1q (C1q ox), or type II collagen (CII, induces arthritis in these animals), in order to induce arthritis. Unlike C1q nat, both CII and C1q ox were able to induce swelling and erythema of joints consistent with an arthritis-like inflammatory reaction. Histopathological evaluation of individual joint sections revealed synovitis, bursitis and tendovaginitis, massive joint destruction, and severe pannus formation. In a time-course study, no differences in …

Interleukin 10 polymorphisms in ankylosing spondylitis.

2003

Genetic polymorphisms of the IL10 promoter region have been implicated in many autoimmune diseases, including seronegative spondyloarthropathies. We studied three SNPs (IL10-1087, -824, and -597) and two microsatellites (IL10R and IL10G) lying within the promoter region of IL10 for association with susceptibility to and clinical manifestations of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a common form of spondyloarthritis. Four hundred and sixty-eight individuals from 182 Finnish families affected with AS were studied. No association between individual IL10 promoter region polymorphisms or marker haplotype was observed with susceptibility to AS, but weak association was noted between the IL10-597 and -8…
