Microbial Enzymes: Relevance for Winemaking

2017

Production of wine from grape juice is predominantly the result of complex enzymatic reactions. The primary bioconversion of grape sugar to ethanol and CO2 by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is catalyzed by cytosolic enzymes. In spontaneous must fermentations, also strains of Saccharomyces bayanus or interspecies hybrids may dominate, probably because of better adaptation to specific environmental conditions. In addition, various enzymes released into the must influence the final composition, color, and sensory properties of wines. These enzymes originate from the grape itself, from epiphytic fungi like Botrytis cinerea, and from yeasts and bacteria associated with vineyards and wine cel…

A method to discriminate between the Candida stellata and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in mixed fermentation on WLD and lysine agar media

2016

This paper presents a simple method to distinguish between Candida stellata and Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts during microbiological analyses. The method is based on differential yeast growth on a medium containing cycloheximide and a medium containing lysine as only nitrogen source (lysine agar). The cycloheximide resistance of 45 yeast strains belonging to Candida stellata, Hanseniaspora uvarum, Hanseniaspora guilliermondii, Metschnikowia pulcherrima, Torulaspora delbrueckii, Zygosaccharomyces bailii, Kluyveromyces thermotolerans and Zygoascus hellenicus, and 14 strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces bayanus on WL nutrient agar, was assayed. Cycloheximide resistance is ch…

Development of a Sensitive Detection Method for Alphaviruses and Its Use as a Virus Neutralization Assay

2021

Alphaviruses have a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome that contains two open reading frames encoding either the non-structural or the structural genes. Upon infection, the genomic RNA is translated into the non-structural proteins (nsPs). NsPs are required for viral RNA replication and transcription driven from the subgenomic promoter (sgP). Transfection of an RNA encoding the luciferase gene under the control of the sgP into cells enabled the detection of replication-competent chikungunya virus (CHIKV) or Mayaro virus (MAYV) with high sensitivity as a function of the induced luciferase activity. This assay principle was additionally used to analyze virus-neutralizing antibodies in…

Physiopathologie des vascularites primitives des gros vaisseaux

2016

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu's arteritis (TA) are two granulomatous vasculitis affecting large arteries that present specific epidemiological and clinical features. Their pathogenesis is not fully understood but major advances have been obtained during the last years, thus allowing the emergence of new therapeutic strategies. GCA and TA develop on a specific genetic background but share some similarities regarding the immunological pathways involved in their pathogenesis. The trigger of these diseases is not clearly identified but it is thought that an infectious agent could activate and lead to the maturation of dendritic cells that are localized in the adventitia of arteries. T…

Harnessing Big Data for Communicable Tropical and Sub-Tropical Disorders: Implications From a Systematic Review of the Literature

2018

aim: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), communicable tropical and sub-tropical diseases occur solely, or mainly in the tropics, thriving in hot, and humid conditions. Some of these disorders termed as neglected tropical diseases are par- ticularly overlooked. Communicable tropical/sub-tropical diseases represent a diverse group of communicable disorders occurring in 149 countries, favored by tropical and sub-tropical conditions, affecting more than one billion people and imposing a dramatic societal and economic burden. methods: A systematic review of the extant scholarly literature was carried out, searching in PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus. The search string used included prope…

Trap-assisted spectroscopy with REXTRAP

2007

International audience; As one of the fashionable techniques for nuclear spectroscopy experiments, the beam manipulation in gas-filled Penning traps permits the accurate measurement of some of the ground state properties of exotic nuclides. It was recently applied using REXTRAP for the measurement of the half-life of 38Ca, one of the 0+ → 0+ β-decaying nuclide of interest for the determination of the Ft value for super-allowed transitions, and the test of the unitarity of the CKM matrix. The experimental setup and the original method of beam purification adopted for this measurement is presented.

Globorotalia truncatulinoides in the Mediterranean Basin during the Middle–Late Holocene: Bio-Chronological and Oceanographic Indicator

2022

The planktonic foraminiferal species Globorotalia truncatulinoides is widely used as a biostratigraphic proxy for the Quaternary in the Mediterranean region. High-resolution quantitative studies performed on sediment cores collected in the central and western Mediterranean Sea evidence a significant abundance of G. truncatulinoides during the Middle Holocene. The robust chronological frame allows us to date this bio-event to 4.8–4.4 ka Before Present (BP), very close to the base of the Meghalayan stage (4.2 ka BP). As a consequence, we propose that G. truncatulinoides can be considered a potential marker for the Middle–Late Holocene chronological subdivision. G. truncatulinoides is a deep-d…

Bóle brzucha jako rzadki objaw choroby Takayasu u 14-letniego chłopca – opis przypadku i przegląd piśmiennictwa

2015

Takayasu arteritis (TA) is a rare disease that belongs to the group of large vessel vasculitis with unknown etiopathogenesis. Immunological disorders, genetic and environmental factors are probably involved in its development. The inflammatory process affects the aorta, its main branches, pulmonary arteries and results in segmental stenosis, occlusion, dilatation and aneurysm formation in the arterial wall. In the acute, early phase of TA non-specific general symptoms associated with the inflammatory process dominate. In the second phase hypertension or symptoms of tissues and organs ischemia may occur in the result of segmental stenosis of vessels. The most frequent symptoms in children ar…
