ChemInform Abstract: Maya Blue as a Nanostructured Polyfunctional Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Material: The Need to Change Paradigms.

Maya Blue, an ancient nanostructured organic–inorganic hybrid material resulting from the attachment of indigo, a natural dye, to a phyllosilicate clay, palygorskite, has received considerable attention of late. Despite intensive research, several aspects remain unsolved, in particular the nature of the indigo–palygorskite association. Recent results suggest that the Maya Blue pigment is a complex system in which different topological isomers of various indigoid molecules attached to the palygorskite matrix coexist.

Population structure and reticulate evolution of Saccharomyces eubayanus and its lager-brewing hybrids

Reticulate evolution can be a major driver of diversification into new niches, especially in disturbed habitats and at the edges of ranges. Industrial fermentation strains of yeast provide a window into these processes, but progress has been hampered by a limited understanding of the natural diversity and distribution of Saccharomyces species and populations. For example, lager beer is brewed with Saccharomyces pastorianus, an alloploid hybrid of S. cerevisiae and S. eubayanus, a species only recently discovered in Patagonia, Argentina. Stuck at work? Quantitative proteomics of environmental wine yeast strains reveals the natural mechanism of overcoming stuck fermentation

During fermentation oenological yeast cells are subjected to a number of different stress conditions and must respond rapidly to the continuously changing environment of this harsh ecological niche. In this study we gained more insights into the cell adaptation mechanisms by linking proteome monitoring with knowledge on physiological behaviour of different strains during fermentation under model winemaking conditions. Nonlinear balayage on metric spaces

We develop a theory of balayage on complete doubling metric measure spaces supporting a Poincaré inequality. In particular, we are interested in continuity and p-harmonicity of the balayage. We also study connections to the obstacle problem. As applications, we characterize regular boundary points and polar sets in terms of balayage. Skeleta of affine hypersurfaces

A smooth affine hypersurface Z of complex dimension n is homotopy equivalent to an n-dimensional cell complex. Given a defining polynomial f for Z as well as a regular triangulation of its Newton polytope, we provide a purely combinatorial construction of a compact topological space S as a union of components of real dimension n, and prove that S embeds into Z as a deformation retract. In particular, Z is homotopy equivalent to S.

Determination of the form factors for the decayB0→D*−l+νland of the CKM matrix element|Vcb|

We present a combined measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element vertical bar V-cb vertical bar and of the parameters rho(2), R-1(1), and R-2(1), which fully characterize the form factors for the B-0 -> D*(-)center dot(+)nu(center dot) decay in the framework of heavy-quark effective field theory. The results, based on a selected sample of about 52 800 B-0 -> D*(-)center dot(+)nu(center dot) decays, recorded by the BABAR detector, are rho(2)=1.157 +/- 0.094 +/- 0.027, R-1(1)=1.327 +/- 0.131 +/- 0.043, R-2(1)=0.859 +/- 0.077 +/- 0.021, and F(1)vertical bar V-cb vertical bar=(34.7 +/- 0.4 +/- 1.0)x10(-3). Mass Hierarchy, Mixing, CP-Violation and Higgs Decay---or Why Rotation is Good for Us

The idea of a rank-one rotating mass matrix (R2M2) is reviewed detailing how it leads to ready explanations both for the fermion mass hierarchy and for the distinctive mixing patterns between up and down fermion states, which can be and have been tested against experiment and shown to be fully consistent with existing data. Further, R2M2 is seen to offer, as by-products: (i) a new solution of the strong CP problem in QCD by linking the theta-angle there to the Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating phase in the CKM matrix, and (ii) some novel predictions of possible anomalies in Higgs decay observable in principle at the LHC. A special effort is made to answer some questions raised.

Comprehensive measurements oft-channel single top-quark production cross sections ats=7  TeVwith the ATLAS detector

This article presents measurements of the t-channel single top-quark ((t) over bart) and top-antiquark (_ t) total production cross sections sdtq_ and sd _ tq_, their ratio Rt sdtq_= sd _ tq_, and a measurement of the inclusive production cross section sdtq _ _ tq_ in proton-proton collisions at ffiffiffi ps = 7 TeV at the LHC. Differential cross sections for the tq and _ tq processes are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and the absolute value of the rapidity of t and _ t, respectively. Kaon Decays in the Standard Model

A comprehensive overview of kaon decays is presented. The Standard Model predictions are discussed in detail, covering both the underlying short-distance electroweak dynamics and the important interplay of QCD at long distances. Chiral perturbation theory provides a universal framework for treating leptonic, semileptonic and nonleptonic decays including rare and radiative modes. All allowed decay modes with branching ratios of at least 10^(-11) are analyzed. Some decays with even smaller rates are also included. Decays that are strictly forbidden in the Standard Model are not considered in this review. The present experimental status and the prospects for future improvements are reviewed.

Extraction of heavy-quark-expansion parameters from unquenched lattice data on pseudoscalar and vector heavy-light meson masses

We present a precise lattice computation of pseudoscalar and vector heavy-light meson masses for heavy-quark masses ranging from the physical charm mass up to $\ensuremath{\simeq}4$ times the physical $b$-quark mass. We employ the gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with ${N}_{f}=2+1+1$ dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing ($a\ensuremath{\simeq}0.062,0.082,0.089\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fm}$) with pion masses in the range ${M}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}\ensuremath{\simeq}210--450\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MeV}$.
