Psychometric properties of the measure of achieved capabilities in homeless services

2023

Abstract Background Purposeful participation in personally meaningful life tasks, enjoyment of positive reciprocal relationships, and opportunities to realize one’s potential are growth-related aspects of a meaningful life that should be considered important dimensions of recovery from homelessness. The extent to which homeless services support individuals to achieve the capabilities they need to become who they want to be and do what they want to do is, in turn, an important indicator of their effectiveness. In this study, we developed a measure of achieved capabilities (MACHS) for use in homeless services settings, and assessed its construct and concurrent validity. Methods We analysed da…

THE ROLE OF ONTOLOGICAL LEARNING LEVELS IN DEVELOPING DYNAMIC CAPABILITIES

2018

This paper explores the links between the fields of dynamic capabilities and organisational learning (OL), emphasising the role of the different ontological learning levels. The resource-based view (RBV) is pinpointed as the key origin of the dynamic capabilities view (DCV), in connection with OL and knowledge management. Ontological learning levels are identified as key OL stages. The knowledge-based view (KBV) of the firm is introduced as a key link between OL processes and dynamic capabilities development. Specifically, we propose a novel and integrative framework for understanding the role that the RBV, the DCV, OL, and the KBV, have, in an inter-connected way, have played in achieving …

Competitive advantage and strategy formulation

2005

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to promote the use of dynamic capabilities as a strategic tool of the highest order in terms of firm management.Design/methodology/approach – The content of the article is developed from a table that offers some insights into the relationship between the three theoretical perspectives analyzed in the paper: resource‐based view, knowledge‐based view and dynamic‐capabilities view.Findings – The paper describes the evolution that can be discerned in the process of developing competitive advantage, from a resource‐based view to a dynamic‐capabilities framework.Originality/value – The objective of the article was not to bring to light any new revelations in thi…

Solid Rocket Motor Combustion Instabilities: Analysis of the Transition to the First Limit Cycle

2009

A nonlinear multi time-scale analysis of the solid propellant rocket motor transition to the first limit cycle is presented and the motor behavior subsequent to some relevant transition scenarios is investigated. Important physical parameters characterizing the transition to limit cycle are then put in evidence and their cross-effects are studied. The analysis takes into account the effects of acoustic-vorticity-entropy wave coupling, waves steepening, rotational and viscous flow losses due to the steep-fronted waves, energy losses in the steepened state, nonlinear energy pathways and includes the study of the oscillatory energy losses in the nozzle, the unsteady combustion and the combusti…

Algorithmic Complexity Vulnerability Analysis of a Stateful Firewall

2016

Algorithmic complexity vulnerabilities are an opportunity for an ad-versary to conduct a sophisticated kind of attack i.e. on network infrastructure services. Such attacks take advantage of worst case time or space complexity of algorithms implemented on devices in their software. In this paper we address potential risks introduced by such algorithmic behavior in computer networks in particular on a stateful firewall. First we introduce the idea and theoretical background for the attack. We then describe in full detail a successfully con-ducted attack which takes advantage of the worst case computational complexi-ty of O(n2) of a hash table data structure used to store active sessions. The …

MOTOR COORDINATION DIFFICULTIES IN CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES

2016

Nowadays increasing the number of children with learning disabilities in comprehensive schools of Latvia, so it is necessary preventive measures during schooltime. One of the support measures are short movement activity in academic lessons. The aim of article is theoretical analyze the correlations between motor coordination difficulties and the child's academic achievement and find out primary school teachers' views on possible support for children with learning disabilities. Main findings – development of motor coordination in children of primary schools is effective when using short movement breaks in classroom. Research methods: analysis of scientific and methodological literature, a su…

The Essence of Dynamic Capabilities and their Measurement

2016

The growing popularity of explaining firm performance through dynamic capabilities has motivated plenty of conceptual development in the field. However, empirical approaches to measuring dynamic capabilities have so far not been under comprehensive scrutiny. The authors; purpose is to assess the extent to which different ways of measuring dynamic capabilities in quantitative studies correspond to the theoretical essence of the concept, and develop recommendations for future research. They find that four types of operationalizations have been used: (1) managers’ evaluations; (2) financial data; (3) company's experience, actions and performance; and (4) managers’ or employees’ experience, act…

Predicting Mathematics Achievement in Secondary Education: The Role of Cognitive, Motivational, and Emotional Variables.

2020

Academic achievement in general, and in mathematics in particular, is positively associated not only with cognitive abilities, but also with emotional and motivational skills. The objective of this study was to analyze the prediction strength of cognitive, motivational, and emotional variables in mathematics achievement throughout high school, considering students' gender and age. A large sample of 2,365 Spanish students from the 4 years of high school (12-16 years old) participated in the study. Students provided information about their intellectual skills, perceived competence in mathematics, perceived utility of mathematics, intrinsic interest in learning, mathematics anxiety, and their …

Making meaning of inclusive education: classroom practices in Finnish and South African classrooms

2017

AbstractThis paper reports on the findings of an international comparative research project where the roles of teachers in the implementation of inclusive education in mainstream-classroom settings in South Africa and Finland were investigated. Inclusive education within this project is broadly defined as welcoming all students to general-education schools and classrooms and not segregating students on the basis of ability or other individual or sociocultural characteristics. In this paper a qualitative analysis of Finnish and South African teachers’ day-to-day teaching and learning support practices in their classroom is discussed. Individual and focus-group interviews encouraged teachers …
