Gangliosides make a wide family of glycosphingolipids ubiquitously expressed in mammalian tissues and particularly abundant in the brain and nervous system. They exhibit a huge diversity due to structural variations in both their oligosaccharidic chain and ceramide moiety, which represent a real analytical challenge. Human papillomavirus (HPV) exists as more than 100 genotypes. It is not well-established whether the different HPV types interfere with infection or pathogenesis by each other. Possible interactions in cervical carcinogenesis between infection with the most common HPV types (6, 11, 16, 18 and 33) were studied in a seroepidemiological case- control study of 218 women with primary untreated cervical cancer and 219 healthy age-matched control women. As previously shown, HPV-16 seropositivity was associated with cervical cancer risk [odds ratio (OR), 2·39], but HPV-16 was not associated with cervical cancer risk among HPV-6 seropositive women (OR, 1·0). The anodic treatment of 2,4-dimethylphenol offers a powerful and direct method for the construction of a dehydrotetramer with four contiguous stereocentres on a multigram scale. The installation of propellanes on this scaffold using enantiomerically pure carbonyl compounds leads to a mixture of diastereomers. This mixture is easily separable using standard chromatography and gives rise to optically pure cyclopenta[b]benzofurans which are important scaffolds in a variety of natural products. The previously reported polymorph occurs in the monoclinic space groupP21and has two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit [Peeterset al.(1993).Acta Cryst.C49, 2157–2160]. In the title molecule, the pyran rings adopt half-chair conformations. The absolute configuration isSfor the hydroxy-bearing C atom andRfor the asymmetric C atom in the dihydropyran unit. Abstract The absolute configurations of (S)-timolol hemihydrate and (S)-timolol O,O-diacetyl-(R,R)-tartaric acid monoester were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. An NMR analysis based on the temperature dependence of vicinal coupling constants was carried out to characterize the conformational behaviour of the S,R,R- and R,R,R-forms in solution. The same conformation as in crystalline state was also found in solution, although with a rather low preference over some other conformations. Abstract An efficient diastereoselective synthesis of the spongian diterpenes (−)-spongian-16-oxo-17-al ( 1 ) and (−)-acetyldendrillol-1 ( 13 ) is described starting from (+)-podocarp-8(14)-13-one ( 6 ) via the ester-dialdehyde 11 as key intermediate. The absolute configuration at C-17 in synthetic compound 13 has conclusively been proved by NOE experiments.
When and how to treat acute hepatitis C?

Background: Appropriate treatment of acute hepatitis C is still a matter of controversy due to the lack of large controlled trials. Aim: To assess the effectiveness of interferon as treatment for acute hepatitis C by meta-analysis. Methods: MEDLINE search (1985-2002) was supplemented with manual searches of reference lists. Studies were included if they were controlled trials comparing interferon to no treatment and if they included patients with either post-transfusion or sporadic acute hepatitis C.
