Short-Term Precision Error of Bone Strain Index, a New DXA-Based Finite Element Analysis Software for Assessing Hip Strength

Abstract Bone Strain Index (BSI) is a new finite element analysis tool applied to hip dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scans. The aim of this study was to assess the short-term precision error of BSI on the proximal femur, both on a phantom and patients. The International Society for Clinical Densitometry guidelines were followed for short-term precision error assessment. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements were performed on an anthropomorphic femur phantom that was scanned twice for 30 times, for a total of 60 scans. Preventing bone loss during androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer: Early experience with neridronate

Abstract Objective: Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) is the usual treatment for locally advanced or metastatic prostate cancer. Osteoporosis is a common complication of ADT. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of neridronate, a relatively new bisphosphonate to prevent bone loss during androgen ablation. Methods: Sixty patients with prostate cancer and osteoporosis were enrolled and randomly assigned to 2 different treatment regimes: group A (30 patients) treated with maximum androgenic blockage (MAB), and group B (30 patients) treated with bicalutamide 150mg. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a traditional operative procedure in the treatment of osteoarthritis. The hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) provides an alternative to the THA for young active patients. Influence of Different DXA Acquisition Modes on Monitoring the Changes in Bone Mineral Density After Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a technique enabling the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) around prostheses after hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA). In this study, we evaluated the consistency of different DXA acquisition modes with 33 patients who had undergone HRA. Patients were scanned with DXA immediately after surgery and at 3-, 6-, and 12-mo time points. All the patients were scanned with dual femur and orthopedic hip acquisition modes and analyzed using 10-region ROI model. The principal aim of our study was the determination of the effectiveness of a standardized ratio, allometric scaling model and a gamma function model in normalizing the isometric torque data of spinal cord patients and healthy subjects. For this purpose we studied a sample of 21 healthy males and 23 spinal cord injury males.
