Characterization of the defect density states in MoOx for c-Si solar cell applications

Thin layers of MoOx have been deposited by thermal evaporation followed by post-deposition annealing. The density of states distributions of the MoOx films were extracted deconvoluting the absorption spectra, measured by a photothermal deflection spectroscopy setup, including the small polaron contribution. Results revealed a sub-band defect distribution centered 1.1 eV below the conduction band; the amplitude of this distribution was found to increase with post-deposition annealing temperature and film thickness.

Transient absorption with a femtosecond tunable excitation pump reveals the emission kinetics of color centers in amorphous silica.

We report a set of femtosecond (fs) transient absorption (TA) measurements following the dynamics of the so-called nonbridging oxygen hole center in silica, a model color center in wide bandgap amorphous solids, characterized by a very large Stokes shift between the UV excitation and its associated red emission at 1.9 eV. The changes in the TA spectrum were probed in the UV-visible range at various delays after photoexcitation and analyzed as a function of the UV excitation energy, in single-photon absorption conditions. Correlation of local disorder and electronic properties in the Heusler alloy Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al

For the fully ordered Heusler alloy Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al half-metallic ferromagnetism has been predicted. Local disorder other than the Al–Cr/Fe (B2)-type disorder is known to destroy the half-metallic bandgap. The usage of appropriate buffer layers improves the structural quality of thin films. We correlate the structural properties of thin magnetron sputtered films determined by x-ray diffraction with details of the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra. From the value of the magnetic moment located at the Cr atom and features of the Co absorption spectra we conclude that the buffer layers lead also to an improvement in the local atomic order. Study of magnesium and aluminum alloys absorption coefficient during Nd:YAG laser interaction

International audience; In laser processes, the absorption factor of laser Nd:YAG by metals plays a very important role. In order to model laser welding, we need to know its evolution during the process. The theoretical calculation does not enable the prediction of the absorption factor in the case of a keyhole mode. It is difficult to predict the effect of plasma and recoil pressure on the shape of the keyhole. LPE growth and study of the Ce3+ incorporation in LuAlO3:Ce single crystalline film scintillators

This work reports the results of the optical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigation of the Ce3+ incorporation in single crystalline film (SCF) scintillators of Ce-doped LuAlO3 perovskite, grown by the liquid phase epitaxy method onto YAlO3 substrates using a PbO–B2O3 flux. The absorption, luminescence and EPR spectra showed the presence of the main Ce3+ center type (CeLu) corresponding to the location of Ce3+ ions in the twelve-fold coordinated cuboctahedral positions of the LuAlO3 host. Also the dimer CeLu–CeLu centers were found in the EPR spectra of the LuAP:Ce SCFs. No EPR spectrum of the Ce3+ ions located in the octahedral positions of Al3+ cations has been detected in…

Investigations of the corrosion protection of ultrathin a-C and a-C:N overcoats for magnetic storage devices

Abstract The thickness-dependent corrosion protection of carbon overcoats for magnetic hard disks can be analyzed by collecting X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra at the Co L3-edge. Co is the main constituent of the protected magnetic media underneath. The spectra of the Co absorption edge display a strong peak for pure metallic, non-oxidized Co. This peak splits up into several sub-structures for oxidized Co. Therefore, XANES spectra provide a straightforward method to determine the overcoat thickness, leading to closed coverage and corrosion protection of the underlying material. Study of the defects in La3Ta0.5Ga5.5O14 single crystals

Abstract Defects that are formed during crystal growth pose a serious obstacle for potential application of La 3 Ga 5.5 Ta 0.5 O 14 (LGT) as a laser or piezoelectric crystal. We have performed the study of the defects origin in LGT crystals grown in different atmospheres using optical, EPR and time-resolved luminescence characterization methods. The absorption bands detected in the transparency region at 290, 360 and 490 nm ( T =300 K) demonstrate different dependence on crystal annealing in vacuum and air. EPR analysis demonstrated that the defects responsible for these bands are non-paramagnetic. X-ray irradiation results in hole trapping by oxygen ions thus forming O − centers perturbed …
