Photoluminescence at 1.9 eV in synthetic wet silica

We report the effects of γ-irradiation on the optical activity of wet synthetic silica samples. As a function of γ-dose, the growth of a composite structure in the 4–6 eV spectral region of the absorption spectrum is observed. This structure can be resolved into two main contributions centered at 5.8 and 4.8 eV, respectively. The first component is usually attributed to an optical transition of the E′ centers. The second one is able to excite an emission band centered at 1.9 eV. The analysis of the growth kinetics, in the γ-dose range 20–1000 Mrad, of both emission at 1.9 eV and absorption at 4.8 eV shows that these two bands change in a similar way, reaching constant amplitudes, after an i…

Luminescence of γ-radiation-induced defects in α-quartz

Optical transitions associated with γ-radiation-induced defects in crystalline α-quartz were investigated by photoluminescence excited by both pulsed synchrotron radiation and steady-state light. After a 10 MGy γ-dose we observed two emissions at 4.9 eV (ultraviolet band) and 2.7 eV (blue band) excitable in the range of the induced absorption band at 7.6 eV. These two luminescence bands show a different temperature dependence: the ultraviolet band becomes bright below 80 K; the blue band increases below 180 K, but drops down below 80 K. Electronic Spectroscopy of C2 in Solid Rare Gas Matrixes

Electronic spectroscopy of the C(2) molecule is investigated in Ar, Kr, and Xe matrixes in the 150-500 nm range. In the Ar matrix, the D ((1)Sigma(u)(+)) <-- ((1)Sigma(g)(+)) Mulliken band near 240 nm is the sole absorption in the UV range, whereas in the Kr matrix additional bands in the 188-209 nm range are assigned to the Kr(n)()(+)C(2)(-) <-- Kr(n)()C(2) charge-transfer absorptions. Because of the formation of a bound C(2)Xe species, the spectral observations in the Xe matrix differ dramatically from the lighter rare gases: the Mulliken band is absent and new bands appear near 300 and 423 nm. Abstract A wide range of analytical techniques were used to investigate rock varnish from different locations (Negev, Israel; Knersvlakte, South Africa; Death Valley and Mojave Desert, California): a 200 nm-femtosecond laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS), an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), focused ion beam (FIB) slicing, and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy–near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (STXM–NEXAFS). Solution processed thin films of an amphiphilic tris(phthalocyaninato) rare earth triple-decker complex, Eu(2)[Pc(15C5)(4)](2)[Pc(OC(10)H(21))(8)], have been prepared from three different methods: self-assembly (SA) annealed in solvent vapor, quasi-Langmuir-Shäfer (QLS) and drop casting methods. In particular, we successfully developed a simple QLS process for fabricating ordered multilayers with a good thickness control. Exploring the catalytic performance of a series of bimetallic MIL-100(Fe, Ni) MOFs

[EN] A series of mixed-metal Fe-III/Ni-II metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of the MIL-100 type containing different metal ratios have been synthesized de novo, following an approach that requires tuning of the Fe-III/Ni-II reactivity. The resulting heterometallic MIL-100(Fe, Ni) materials maintain thermal, chemical and structural stability with respect to the parent MIL-100(Fe) MOF as can be deduced from various techniques. Efficacy of preheated chelating agents on calcium ion removal from instrumented root canals

Background The heating of chelating agents such as EDTA increases dentin wettability by decreasing surface tension. However, the calcium ion release effect of preheated chelating agents in instrumented root canals has not yet been mentioned. Spectrophotometric analysis of mixtures of two components with extensively or completely overlapping spectra by the H-point standard additions method

This paper discusses the requirements and scope of application of the H-Point Standard Additions Method (HPSAM) for resolving binary mixtures. Various mixtures of dyes with extensively or completely overlapping spectra were assayed with accurate, precise results. The method thus developed was also applied to the spectrophotometric resolution of binary mixtures of phenol and o-cresol, the absorption bands of which lie in similar positions and feature similar absorptivities.
