AbstractDetermining the manganese concentration in shells of freshwater bivalves provides a unique way to obtain information about climate and environmental changes during time-intervals that pre-date instrumental data records. This approach, however, relies on a thorough understanding of how manganese is incorporated into the shell material –a point that remained controversial so far. The concept of "molecular magnetic sponges" was introduced for the first time in 1999 by the creative imagination of the late Olivier Kahn. It refers to the exotic spongelike behavior of certain molecule-based materials that undergo a dramatic change of their magnetic properties upon reversible dehydration/rehydration processes. XRD and XAS structural study of CuAlO2under high pressure

International audience; We present the results of x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments in CuAlO2 under high pressure. We discuss the polarization dependence of the x-ray absorption near-edge structure at the Cu K-edge. XRD under high pressure evidences anisotropic compression, the a-axis being more compressible than the c-axis. EXAFS yields the copper-oxygen bond length, from which the only internal parameter of the delafossite structure is deduced. The combination of anisotropic compression and the internal parameter decrease results in a regularization of the AlO6 octahedra. Optical Properties of Self-Assembled GaxIn1-xAs/InP Quantum Wires

Temperature dependent photoluminescence studies have been carried out on several samples containing self-assembled Ga x In 1-x As/InP quantum wires. A red-shift of the emission wavelength is observed when increasing the Ga content in the alloy, but the overall optical quality decreases. In the case of x = 0.15, the photoluminescence is not sensible to temperature and the emission band is conserved until room temperature is reached, which could be explained if the nanostructures are considered to be almost amorphous.

Proton Dynamics in In:BaZrO3: Insights on the Atomic and Electronic Structure from X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

The local structure of Ba2+, Zr4+, and In3+ in In:BaZrO3 is investigated with EXAFS for samples having 0 to 75% In3+ content. It is found that indium can be inserted in any ratio in the host matrix oxide and that the oxygen coordination shell displays an In-O distance very similar to the Zr-O length. In the Zr-rich compositions, there is a preferred dopant-vacancy association that, however, does not give rise to dopant-proton interaction in the hydrated samples. The tendency of Ba2+ to be attracted toward the dopant site is attributed to the electrostatic interaction with the dopant and to the structural rearrangement around the In3+ site. Amorphous p-Type Conducting Zn-x Ir Oxide (x > 0.13) Thin Films Deposited by Reactive Magnetron Cosputtering

Zinc-iridium oxide (Zn-Ir-O) thin films have been demonstrated as a p-type conducting material. However, the stability of p-type conductivity with respect to chemical composition or temperature is still unclear. In this study we discuss the local atomic structure and the electrical properties of Zn-Ir-O films in the large Ir concentration range. The films are deposited by reactive DC magnetron co-sputtering at two different substrate temperatures-without intentional heating and at 300 {\deg}C. The lateral variation of solid state reactions at surfaces studied by means of photoemission electron microscopy: formation of titanium silicides

The alloying and oxygen reduction at titanium silicon interfaces were studied by means of photoemission microscopy. The microscopic chemical composition of the sample surface was characterised by means of imaging X-ray absorption. The silicide formation was studied at clean and oxidised silicon substrates both covered with micron-sized titanium patterns.

High-pressure x-ray absorption spectroscopy study of tin tungstates

Room-temperature pressure-dependent (0-25 GPa) x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the W -edges of α-SnWO4 and β-SnWO4 was performed using a dispersive setup and a high-pressure nanodiamond anvil cell. The detailed analysis of experimental x-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended x-ray absorption fine structure data suggests that upon increasing pressure, a displacement of tungsten atoms by about 0.2 A toward the center of the WO6 octahedra occurs in α-SnWO4, whereas the coordination of tungsten atoms changes from tetrahedral to distorted octahedral in β-SnWO4.

Ancient wood of the Acqualadrone rostrum: Materials history through gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and sulfur X-ray absorption spectroscopy

In 2008 the rostrum from an ancient warship was recovered from the Mediterranean near Acqualadrone, Sicily. To establish its provenance and condition, samples of black and brown rostrum wood were examined using sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). GC/MS of pyrolytic volatiles yielded only guaiacyl derivatives, indicating construction from pinewood. A derivatized extract of black wood yielded forms of abietic acid and sandaracopimaric acid consistent with pine pitch waterproofing.
